Abstract
The invention relates to a mechanical seal and a method for sealing a rotating pipe (1) against a fixed casing (2a, 2b). In this case, a sealing ring (3) which can rotate with the pipe (1) is connected to the pipe (1). An abutting ring (5, 5a, 5b) is connected via a flexible compensator (4a, 4b) to the casing (2a, 2b). It is provided that the abutting ring (5, 5a, 5b) and the compensator (4a, 4b) are supported by rollers (6, 6a, 6b) arranged on the circumference of the abutting ring (5, 5a, 5b). The rotation axis of each roller (6, 6a, 6b) stands upright on the circumference of the abutting ring (5, 5a, 5b). The rollers (6, 6a, 6b) are supported on rails (7, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) and can be displaced in a rolling manner there. The rails (7, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d) are mounted on the fixed casing (2a, 2b). They may be inclined in the direction towards the sealing ring (3) and thus form an inclined plane for the rollers (6, 6a, 6b). The abutting ring (5, 5a, 5b) is held in a space-saving manner and is pressed against the sealing ring (3) by the rollers (6, 6a, 6b) arranged on an inclined plane. <IMAGE>
