Abstract
The oriented filling for a column, wherein matter or heat are exchanged between liq. and a counterflowing gaseous phase, consists of superimposed horizontal layers each filling the entire column cross-section, with the lowermost layer resting on an apertured support. Each layer is twisted relative to adjacent layers, and is formed with vertical walls formed of flexible non-metallic capillary-active material reinforced by a mesh of rigid material, esp. metal. The non-metallic material, made e.g., from spun-glass fibres may be coated on to or with the metal reinforcement. - The walls may be of stiffened fabric, with warp threads of one material woven with weft threads of the companion material. When made of corrugated material, the corrugations in adjacent surfaces are offset from each other and contact only at their peeks.
