Abstract

A mixed catalyst system comprises a) the reaction prod. of i) a vanadium halide of formula VX3, X = Cl, Br or I; ii) a modifier of formula BX3 or AlR(3-a)Xa, where R = 1-14C alkyl; a = 0-2; and iii) an electron donor, which is a liq. Lewis base in which (i) and (ii) are soluble; b) one of the following i) a complex of formula ZrMgbXc(ED)d (where ED = electron donor, which is a liq. lens base in which the precursors of the complex are soluble; b = 1-3; c = equal or less than 4+2b; and d = 4-10; or ii) a vanadium oxy cpd. of formula VOX3, where R = monovalent 2-10C hydrocarbon radical, the vanadium cpd. and the vanadium oxy cpd. are supported c) a hydrocarbyl aluminium cocatalyst; and d) a halocarbon promoter offormula ReCX(4-e), where R = H or opt. halo substd. 1-6C alkyl, e = 0-2, if no F present e = 2. - Also claimed is the prodn. of an ethylene (co)polymer by passing ethylene opt. with 3 or more C 2-olefin comonomer(s) in contact with the above mixed catalyst system, under polymerisation conditions. - The electron donors are alkyl esters of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids, aliphatic ketones, aliphatic amines, aliphatic alcohols, (cyclo) alkyl ethers ot mixts. of these, each, electron donor as 2-20C atoms and (b) is the complex (b)(i) pref. ZrMg2Cl8 (tetrahydrofuran)6 or (b) is the vanadium oxy cpd. (b) (ii) pref. VOCl3 (a) is the reaction prod. of vanadium trichloride, diethylaluminium chloride as the modifier,a nd THF, the prod. is impregnated on a silica support.
