Abstract

The present invention specifies a technical solution whereby liquid and solid waste from sugarcane processing is subjected to material and energy recovery while avoiding environmental pollution. For this purpose, proven biotechnology is employed in such a way that the energy potential of the biogenic carbon present in the waste is largely utilized and the inorganic plant nutrients present in the waste are predominantly preserved in a plant-available form. For this purpose, during sugarcane processing, mixtures of liquid, finely divided and comminuted solid waste are produced, partially recovered directly during the processing campaign and for recovery outside the processing campaign are accumulated in a storage region (8) with a low level of loss. The sludge-based waste mixtures are subjected to biotechnological recovery in the same manner as fresh waste mixtures. According to the multi-stage biotechnological process of the invention, waste that is rich in crude fibers and carbohydrates is initially treated in a hydrolysis station (11). The hydrolysates obtained are physically fermented successively with each other in different anaerobic environments in a plurality of fermentation stations (12, 13), in each case adapted microcultures are used and devices known per se are used to use them in such a way as to guarantee a continuous culture.
