Abstract

En un método para extraer valores de níquel y cobalto de mineral laterítico conteniendo magnesio, en el cual el mineral es calcinado bajo condiciones de reducción para convertir el níquel y el cobalto al estado de metal crudo, el calcinado resultante es apagado en solución de carbonato de amonio amoniacal, se pasa gas portador de oxígeno libre a través del derretido apagado para realizar la primera etapa de lixiviación del níquel y el cobalto en el calcinado, el derretido de lixiviación de la primera etapa es espesado y se recicla la solución de lixiviación para proporcionar por lo menos parte de la solución de apagado, la mejora que comprende prolongar la primera etapa de lixiviación durante un período de tiempo más del necesario para obtener la máxima extracción de valores de níquel y de cobalto y terminar la primera etapa de lixiviación después de que la mayor parte del magnesio disuelto que es solubilizado durante el período anterior de lixiviación se ha precipitado de la solución en forma compuesta sobre los sólidos del derretido de lixiviación.
