Abstract

A process to extract suspended solid impurities from a sugar liquor that is evaporated sugar cane juice or refining syrup, forming in said liquor a primary floc of insoluble calcium phosphate containing said suspended impurities, aerating the liquor it contains the primary floc, uniformly distributing 1 to 20 and more preferably 5 to 15, parts by weight of flocculating anionic agent per million parts by weight of sugar in the liquor to initiate the formation of a secondary floc therein, retaining the resulting mixture for 15 seconds to 5 minutes, preferably 30 seconds to 3 min., in a flocculator container with non-turbulent agitation avoiding the segregation of the secondary floc of the liquor and allowing the secondary floc to grow, transferring the liquor it contains to the secondary floc without additional agitation from the flocculating vessel to a separating vessel, allowing the secondary floc segregate by flotation from the liquor into the separator container, and separately removing clarified liquor and flocculated solids from the separator container, characterized in that the primary floc is formed by adding a soluble phosphate salt to the liquor, and that the flocculating agent used to form the floc Secondary is a polymer with a molecular weight of from one million to 10 million containing 50 to 80 mole percent acrylamide units and 50 to 20 mole percent acrylic acid and / or acrylate units.
