Abstract
The invention relates to a method for the radiation-chemical conversion of SO & ind2! in gas grids, especially in exhaust fumes, to SO & ind3! under the influence of electrical or magnetic fields. The resulting SO & ind3! can be reacted with water or steam to sulfuric acid and so removed from the gas stream. The invention solves the problem of both reducing the energy expenditure and reducing the requirements placed on the insulation materials. This is achieved by selecting the strength of the electric or magnetic field only to such an extent that, although the primary recombination of the ion pairs formed by the radiation is reduced and some of the non-recombining electrons with SO &sub2; or O & ind2-! Molecular negative ions form (which contribute to increasing the formation rate of SO & ind3! By subsequent reactions), but no suggestions take place yet. Instead of field strengths of a few thousand volts / cm, field strengths of up to about 100 V / cm are sufficient.

Verfahren zur strahlenchemischen Umwandlung von Schwefeldioxid zu SchwefeltrioxidProcess for the radiation chemical conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide
The invention relates to a process for the radiation chemical conversion of sulfur dioxide in gas streams, in particular in exhaust gases, to sulfur trioxide under the action of electrical or magnetic fields. The resulting sulfur trioxide can be converted with water or steam to sulfuric acid and thus removed from the gas stream.
Methods have been proposed for the chemical conversion of sulfur dioxide into sulfur trioxide, which relate both to the conversion of sulfur dioxide in aqueous systems and the oxidation of sulfur dioxide into the gas phase. Thus, a catalytic process is described (DE-OS 2,442,748), in which the sulfur dioxide-containing exhaust gases are uncooled dissolved in sulfuric acid with a manganese content of 0.0003 to 0.03 % in the presence of air or oxygen and treated with X-radiation. There is obtained a sulfur dioxide-free sulfuric acid. The disadvantages of this method are that a considerable energy expenditure arises as a result of the passage of the exhaust gases through the liquid-filled reactor.
In der Gasphase wird meist die gleichzeitige BeseitigungIn the gas phase is usually the simultaneous elimination

So z. For example, it is proposed (U.S. Patent 3,869,362) to treat the gas containing nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide (in the proportion of 0.1 to 3.0) with ionizing radiation or ultraviolet light.
Es wird angegeben, daß bei einer Gas-Depending on the ratio of nitrogen oxides to sulfur dioxide, denitration and desulphurisation rates of up to 100 % can be achieved. It is stated that in the case of a gas

geschwindigkeit von 10 ir . h , einer Gastemperatur von 150 0C, einem Sauerstoffgehalt von 3 # und einer 4,5 Sekunden dauernden Bestrahlung mit Elektronen (6,45 . 10 Gy/s) bei einem Gemisch von 1000 ppm Schwefeldioxid und 990 ppm Stickstoffdioxid 100#ige Umwandlung beider Schadstoffe erzielt werden kann.speed of 10 ir. h, a gas temperature of 150 ° C., an oxygen content of 3 # and a 4.5 second irradiation with electrons (6.45.10 Gy / s) with a mixture of 1000 ppm sulfur dioxide and 990 ppm nitrogen dioxide 100 # conversion of both Pollutants can be achieved.
To improve the energy yield of the radiation-chemical reaction are often additives such as ammonia, chlorine dioxide, ozone, silicone rubber, polybutadiene u. a. used, with the help of a doubling of G-values can be achieved. Finally, it has been proposed (DD-WP B 01 D / 219 999) to combine the radiation-chemical treatment of the sulfur dioxide-containing gas stream with the application of an electric field of high strength. As a result, the free electrons generated by the irradiation in the gas are accelerated to such an energy that they emit in their migration to the anode field energy inelastic collisions with the gas molecules and thus form desired radicals, but are not yet able to ionize noticeably. The resulting reducible radicals of sulfur dioxide cause an increase in the conversion rate compared to field-free operation. The energy efficiency of this method is more favorable than that of other known radiation-chemical sulfur dioxide oxidations. However, the disadvantages are the required high field strengths of a few thousand volts per cm, which place very high demands on the insulation materials, and the requirement for high-voltage, high-power circuits.

The object of the invention is to reduce this expense in the radiation chemical conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide.
The invention has for its object to change the radiation-chemical method for the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide in gas streams in the presence of electric fields so that both the energy costs reduced and the requirements to the insulation materials are reduced.
The inventive method for the chemical conversion of sulfur dioxide in sulfur trioxide in gas streams in the presence of electric fields is characterized in that the strength of the applied electric (or magnetic) field is chosen so that the primary recombination of the ion pairs formed by the radiation is reduced and part of non-recombining electrons with sulfur dioxide or oxygen molecules form negative ions (which contribute to increasing the rate of formation of sulfur trioxide by successor reactions), but no stimuli are yet to take place.
Feldstärken im Bereich bis zu etwa -100 Volt pro cm reichen so im allgemeinen bereits aus«, Dabei kann die Feldstärke konstant gehalten, aber auchThe energetisohe efficiency of the proposed method is more favorable than in the case of the known method, since both substantially accounts for the proportion of radiation energy attributable to ionization and can be dispensed with suggestions by the applied electrical or, magnetic field. The energy to be expended is distributed between the radiation energy necessary for the generation of free electrons and the (low) field energy required for the separation of the charge carriers. Field strengths in the range of up to about -100 volts per cm are generally sufficient. "The field strength can be kept constant, but so can

- 4 während des Betriebes verändert werden.- 4 are changed during operation.
Since the number of free electrons in the system plays a decisive role for the efficiency of the subsequent processes (formation of negative ions of sulfur dioxide or of oxygen), it is advantageous to additionally (or possibly also instead of electron accelerators) use cold and / or thermal electron emitters ,
The process can also be used for the elimination of nitrogen oxides, halogens, halogenated hydrocarbons and other electronegative components from gas mixtures »
The advantage of the method according to the invention is that the requirements of the insulation materials are low due to the use of low field strengths and no high-voltage sources of high power must be used.
In the flue gas duct of a thermal power plant, a series of electrodes, which are arranged plane-parallel at a distance of 3 cm from each other, introduced. By means of these electrodes, an electric field is applied whose strength is between 10 and 50 V / cm. A source of ionizing radiation (electron accelerator) is arranged so that the irradiation of the ionizing particles (electrons) takes place vertically to the electrodes, ie into the interstices between the electrodes. This radiation generates a basic ionization in the exhaust gas. Part of the non-combining electrons forms negative ions in the presence of sulfur dioxide and oxygen by electron attachment, which then cause the increase in the sulfur trioxide formation rate. The resulting sulfur trioxide is immediately reacted with water vapor to form sulfuric acid and precipitated in a suitable manner.
