Charakteristik der bekannten technischen Lösungen:Characteristic of the known technical solutions:
The oxidative hydrogen abstraction from low saturated monocarboxylic acids to produce the corresponding α, β-unsaturated acids is the subject of numerous publications. The first work reported in this field concerned the thermal performance of said oxidative hydrogen abstraction by vapor phase reaction of the acid with iodine and oxygen. However, this method does not attract much attention in terms of technical exploitation; found. This is due to the fact that iodine is expensive, also very corrosive, and presents considerable difficulties in fully recovering the relatively large amount required in the process.
Heterogeneous catalytic processes for carrying out the oxidative hydrogen splitting are much more interesting from the standpoint of possible industrial utilization. More recently, therefore, the studies have focused mainly on the use of two types of catalysts for this purpose. One of these species generally includes the heteropolyacids, of which 12-molybdophosphoric acid is a typical example, which may optionally contain vanadium and / or tungsten in similar structural arrangement. The other type of catalyst relates to those systems which have a calcined iron phosphate matrix as a common structural feature.
Dabei gibt es aber Hinweise darauf, daß die Gegenwart einer zusätz-Iron phosphates which have been subjected to calcination exist in a plurality of crystalline phases or species. Although the oxidation-reduction reaction occurring in the reaction is presumably due to the iron phosphate, it has not yet been possible with certainty to determine which species or species are catalytically active. However, there are indications that the presence of an additional

Beispielsweise ist in der US-PS 3 948 959 die Wirksamkeit von Alkali- und Erdalkalimetallen als zusätzliche Metallkomponente für diesenunion metal component in the production facilitates the formation of catalytically active forms. For example, U.S. Patent 3,948,959 discloses the effectiveness of alkali and alkaline earth metals as an additional metal component for this

The invention also provides a process for the catalytic conversion of lower, saturated aliphatic carboxylic acids into α, β-unsaturated acids by oxidative hydrogen splitting in the presence of oxygen at temperatures of from 300 to 55 ° C., characterized in that a catalyst of the abovementioned Kind of use.

The catalyst of the invention is particularly useful for heterogeneous catalysis in the oxidative hydrogen abstraction of isobutyric acid to produce methacrylic acid. In this method, the heterogeneous catalyst is contacted at a temperature of 300 to 55 ° C with a feed containing isobutyric acid and dilute gaseous oxygen together.

It has been found that the aluminum-modified iron phosphate catalyst of the invention is active for a long time. Unlike iron phosphate catalysts, which lose their activity over time, it has been found that the aluminum-modified catalyst retains its activity for 100 hour studies.
The catalyst of the invention can be prepared by various methods. According to a simple and preferred method, the entire composition is prepared before the calcination. This can be easily achieved by using the so-called slurry or precipitation method. In the latter method, an aqueous solution of salts of the metals of interest and phosphoric acid is prepared. This solution is then neutralized with a suitable base to precipitate the mixed metal phosphates. The precipitate is then preferably washed carefully to remove any traces of water-soluble ingredients and then dried before calcining. In another embodiment, ammonium phosphate may be added to the salt solution to achieve direct precipitation of the metal phosphates. All water-soluble salts of iron and aluminum can be used.
Due to the solubility properties of the nitrates, these are preferred.
Geeignete Calcinierungstemperaturen liegen in dem breiten Bereich von 400 bis 1000°C, vorzugsweise von 400 bis 850 C.The so-called Aufschlämmungsverfahren is even cheaper to perform, and therefore represents the preferred method. In this case, an aqueous solution of the iron and aluminum salts is obtained together with the phosphoric acid. The solution is heated continuously / until the mass can not be stirred longer. The residue is then crushed and reheated to moderately elevated temperatures in the range of about 120 ° C until completely dry. Subsequently, the dried mass is crushed and calcined. Suitable calcination temperatures are in the broad range of 400 to 1000 ° C, preferably 400 to 850 ° C.
According to the two methods described, supported catalysts can also be prepared. For example, in the slurry process, colloidal silica or colloidal alumina, or any other form thereof, may be added prior to removal of the water. With the use of colloidal alumina, this can simultaneously act as an additional source of aluminum cations, giving the improved activity and extended life which is found in the US Pat. aluminum-modified iron phosphate catalyst of the invention.
In another embodiment, the support can also be introduced into a solution of the metal phosphates and then allowed to dry. The soaking and drying can be repeated until the desired number of layers of dried metal phosphate is obtained. Similarly, the precipitation of the metal phosphates in the other described embodiment can be carried out in the presence of suspended particles of the desired support. In a typical engineering catalyst production, spray-drying is used wherein the slurry is passed to a spray dryer and the solid product is subsequently tabletted or

Die anwendbaren Temperaturen der Umsetzung liegenThe process of the invention may be carried out in a fluidized bed, stirred tank or fixed bed reactor. Since a fixed bed reactor is particularly well suited for small scale operation, such a reactor is used in the examples below. The preferred mode of charging the reactor consists of a preheated gaseous mixture of the substrate, molecular oxygen, steam and an inert diluent gas. Usually, a preheating temperature in the range of about 300 to 350 C is maintained. The applicable temperatures of the reaction are
The molar ratio of molecular oxygen to substrate (carboxylic acid) is 0.2 to 1.5, preferably 0.5 to 1.0. Steam is not necessary for the purpose of carrying out the reaction. However, its presence in the feed improves the yield of the desired product. A suitable molar ratio of water to substrate in the feed is about 75: 1. The best ratio represents a range of about 10 to 30 = 1.
Das bevorzugte Verdünnungs-Another important parameter is the concentration of the substrate in the feed. Expressed in mole percent, the concentration of the substrate in question is in the broad range of 0.1 to 20. As is usual with reactions of this type, the yield of the desired product is an inverse function of the concentration. To achieve reasonable throughput coupled with acceptable yield, the concentration of substrate in the feed should be about 3 to 6 mole percent. The concentration is controlled by the amount of water and inert gas contained in the feed. The preferred dilution
-β- 236592 O? -β- 236592 O?
Gas is nitrogen, although other gases such as carbon dioxide, helium or argon are also suitable. Of course, if air permits the desired substrate concentration, air is a suitable oxidizing and diluting agent.
Another parameter to consider is the contact time. This is defined as the catalyst volume divided by the volume of gas feed per second at the reaction temperature. The catalyst volume is the bulk volume occupied by the catalyst in the reactor. The term catalyst in this sense includes not only the modified iron phosphate itself, but also solid diluents or carriers, if present. Accordingly, applicable contact times are in the range of 0.05 to 50 seconds and usually in the range of 0.1 to 20 seconds. The reaction is carried out at atmospheric pressure.
