Description
The invention relates to a galvanic bath and method for the deposition of magnesium-aluminum alloys for funktiönellen surface finishing of components and workpieces.
Magnesium aluminum alloys with up to 10% aluminum are silver gray, fine crystalline, low in porosity, easy to polish and, above all, harder and more resistant to abrasion than aluminum. They are insensitive to alkaline solutions and hydrofluoric acid. By pickling with nitric acid alkali metal dichromate solutions, even better by anodizing in solutions of more than 30% alkali fluorides (fluxing), the alloys can be made very resistant to atmospheric and maritime attacks.
Because of their lightness and good strength, magnesium aluminum alloys are used in the automotive, aircraft and consumer goods industries. Magnesium aluminum alloys are currently produced only metallurgically and used in massive form. The invention makes it possible to produce building parts and finished parts cheaper by galvanically coating a base material with an adherent and sufficiently thick magnesium-aluminum alloy layer. The use of this composite material also offers the possibility of saving material in various industries.
By JHConnor, WE Reed, GBWood J. Electrochem.Soc. 104/1., 38.1957 describes a solution of diethyl ether as aprotic, organic solvent and magnesium bromide and lithium aluminum hydride as dissolved salts, for the deposition of magnesium-aluminum alloys with an aluminum content up to 10%. The bath contains AIH 4 VMg 2+ in the molar ratio of 2:25 or 1: 4. Brittle, white layers were obtained. Disadvantages of this bath are the flammability, the high vapor pressure of the electrolyte solution and the poor quality of the layers. Another disadvantage is that the bath is not industrially applicable.

The cathode used was a previously defatted bright-etched nickel sheet wetted with tetrahydrofuran. The two magnesium sheets were cleaned with dilute hydrochloric acid before electrolysis, dried and rinsed with dried tetrahydrofuran. The etching of the aluminum anodes was carried out with a solution of 5VoI.-4. HF and 15% by volume of HNO 3 . These were then rinsed with tetrahydrofuran. In cathodic current densities of 0,09A dm "" 2 to 0.5A · dm ~ 2 were from this electrolyte alloys with an aluminum content of max. 21 mass% Al are deposited. FIG. 1 shows the dependence of the aluminum content of the alloy layers on the current density at constant bath composition. The alloys containing up to 10% by weight of Al are silver-gray, matt-glossy and dendrite-free. They are harder than electrolytically produced magnesium, the hardness increases with increasing aluminum content. X-ray fine structure analyzes detect mixed crystal formation. The lattice of magnesium (hexagonal close packing) contracts by the incorporation of aluminum atoms. Scanning electron micrographs show that the deposits are fine crystalline and dense.
