Description
The subject of the present patent application is a process for the production of bandages containing germicides, especially cotton wool and cellulose, as well as absorbent cushions and other liquid absorbent agents intended for nursing and hygienic purposes.
It is known that bandages of all kinds and means and objects for the above-mentioned purposes, for example bandages, swabs, compresses, tampons, sanitary napkins, are brought onto the market ready-to-use in such a way that they or the absorbent material webs required for their production or Prepared fabrics made of cotton, cellulose, wool, silk, artificial fibers etc. are sterilized by treatment with moist or dry heat and provided with an air-tight pack. This has the disadvantage that the means and objects packaged in this way lose their sterility very quickly when the pack is opened and broken. This circumstance gives rise to serious sources of danger, particularly in the case of wound covering materials. In order to eliminate this disadvantage, the procedure has already been to apply disinfecting (germicidal) substances to the absorbent substances or to process them with the absorbent substances.
It has now been found that surgical bandages of all kinds and similar means and objects for hygienic purposes are advantageously produced in such a way that the fabric webs or other absorbent textile and fiber material pretreated in a certain way with bactericidal quaternary ammonium compounds, which in the molecule at least one, optionally interrupted by heteroatoms and / or substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with at least 6 carbon atoms attached to the quaternary nitrogen atom contains bonds, processes or applies the quaternary ammonium compounds to the textile material. Heteroatoms are primarily to be understood as meaning oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen.
Man verbleibt dem saugfähigen Material die gemäss der ErfindungWhat remains for the absorbent material is that according to the invention
The absorbency of the textile material is increased at the same time, since the compounds mentioned are highly capillary-active. Impregnation can be done dry, for example, by applying the solid, finely powdered quaternary ammonium compound to the absorbent material and distributing it evenly by tapping or rubbing. For better retention of the bactericidal substance, the absorbent material can be soaked beforehand with a binding agent, e.g. aqueous glycerine solution. The quaternary ammonium compound can also be applied to the textile material by moist impregnation by dissolving the ammonium compound in water, optionally in the presence of acids or salts, or ethyl alcohol and soaking the absorbent material, e.g. cotton wool, with the solution, then pressing the textile material loosens and dries. Impregnation can also be carried out by spraying the absorbent material on one or both sides with a solution, emulsion or suspension of the quaternary ammonium compound. It is also possible to treat viscose fibers in the same way before or after cutting in the course of manufacture. In all cases, the bactericidal effect of the textile or fiber material treated in this way occurs immediately when the material comes into contact with moisture, e.g. when applied to a wound or when inserted into a body cavity.
In order not to impair the bactericidal effect of the compounds applied to the fibers or to bring them to full development, it is necessary, before impregnation, to free the fiber material from substances which can form insoluble or sparingly soluble salts with quaternary ammonium compounds, or the pretreatment of the fibers, such as boiling, bleaching, softening, etc. to be carried out with products which do not form any insoluble or sparingly soluble compounds with the compounds claimed. So, for example, soap, Turkish red oil, aromatic sulfonic acids, fatty alcohol sulfonates or the like can be removed by rinsing the fibers thoroughly in warm water or alkaline solutions or in insoluble form, e.g. by treatment with aluminum salts, or the pretreatment must be carried out with compounds that are not anionic, such as higher molecular weight polyglycol ethers.
The invention also extends to those wound covering materials which, as described in German patents 396,576 and 714,870, are made from cellulose acetate or water-soluble cellulose ethers, e.g. by applying a solution to the wound, and which are made before wound treatment or during preparation the quaternary ammonium compound is added to the solution for its own preservation and disinfection.
The fibers, yarns, fabrics, etc. produced in this way not only remain largely sterile, even if they are left unprotected in the air for a long time, but always have an immediate bactericidal effect as soon as they come into contact with water, blood or other liquids. In this respect, the objects produced according to the invention differ fundamentally from the substances disinfected by previously known methods, including the use of chemicals, because the ammonium compounds, due to their previously unknown fiber affinity, are absorbed onto the fiber, remain there even after any moisture treatment and at the moment of use, e.g. when covering wounds, their bactericidal properties develop, even if the material has previously been stored for a long time or has even been stored unpacked. At the same time, the textile material becomes supple and easily wettable so that liquids are easily absorbed. The absorbent materials treated in this way are colorless and odorless, do not cause stains and the anti-germ effect is retained even after one or more exposure to water or other liquids. Only very small amounts of the quaternary ammonium compound are required to achieve a sufficient bactericidal effect.
It has already been proposed to disinfect medical instruments, floors, walls, linen and bandages with quaternary ammonium compounds, as is the case with disinfectants known for such sterilization immediately before the use of instruments etc. or for the treatment of infected objects such as walls or linen in the sickroom , such as phenols, are used. But it hasn't been so far known that the quaternary ammonium compounds used according to the invention have a fiber affinity that not only allows the germs located there to be killed on bandages in the aforementioned sense (disinfection), but also to give the bandages a bactericidal effect emanating from them, which is not lost even if the packs are left open and have been wet treated several times.
This knowledge has opened up a new field of application for the above-mentioned quaternary ammonium compounds, which was in no way known or even suggested by the proposal to carry out disinfection in the usual sense with these compounds. It was not known and could not be foreseen that the compounds mentioned have a fiber affinity, so that they are firmly attached to the fiber like dyes. Only this knowledge enabled the development of the new field of application of the production of bactericidal bandages that retain this effect even if they are not stored sterile. With these, a wound treatment based on the bandage and in no way limited to a momentary effect or action on the mucous membranes in body cavities is now possible, an idea that was completely far removed from the previous use of "sterile bandages", which were simply used together with to prevent the introduction of bacteria into the body by the dressing material. A prerequisite for achieving this new effect is the use according to the invention of such textile or fiber material which does not contain any substances which are capable of forming insoluble or sparingly soluble compounds with the quaternary ammonium compounds.
The preparation of the quaternary ammonium compounds is described in the literature.
Beispiel 1:Example 1:
Cotton is impregnated for 20 minutes in a 1 percent aqueous solution of dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride at 40 °, spun and then dried at 80 °. The cotton has a content of about 1% of the substance mentioned. Even after one or more exposure to water, a sufficient part of the quaternary ammonium compound is still present on the fiber.
Beispiel 2:Example 2:
Methyl cellulose is impregnated with a 1 percent solution of dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride for 20 minutes cold or at 40 ° C, possibly during manufacture before drying, then pressed out and dried. It is extremely durable, even in an aqueous solution, and has good bactericidal properties, so that it can be used with advantage as a wound covering material.
Beispiel 3:Example 3:
Cotton wadding, which has been impregnated with a 1 percent solution of diethylcyclohexyldodecyloxymethylammonium bromide and then dried, is used in the usual way on sanitary napkins or vaginal tampons or similar hygienic items. The articles produced in this way are sterile and have bactericidal properties. At the same time, they are extremely absorbent. In the same way, cellulose in any form, such as is used for the production of bandages, handkerchiefs, sanitary napkins, etc., can be given bactericidal properties.
Beispiel 4:Example 4:
Daraus hergestellte hygienische Artikel, Verbandstoffe etc. besitzen bakterizide Eigenschaften.Spun rayon, super polyamide fibers, fiber blends made of these or blended fabrics made of rayon and cotton etc. are treated with a 1 percent solution of polyoxäthyloctadecenyldimethylammonium sulfate for 20 minutes cold or at 30 ° C. Hygienic articles, bandages, etc. made from them have bactericidal properties.
Als weitere Beispiele erfindungsgemäss zu verwendender quartärer Ammoniumverbindungen werden genannt:Further examples of quaternary ammonium compounds to be used according to the invention are mentioned:
Diäthyldodecylbenzylammoniumbromid, Trimethyldodecylammoniumbromid, Methyldiallyldodecylammoniumjodid, Dibenzyloxäthyldodecyloxymethylammoniumchlorid, Alkyldimethylbenzylammoniumchlorid u.a.Diethyldodecylbenzylammonium bromide, trimethyldodecylammonium bromide, methyldiallyldodecylammonium iodide, dibenzyloxäthyldodecyloxymethylammonium chloride, alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and others.
