Abstract

The invention relates to a technique for preparing a protective layer on the surface of stainless steel that is used in molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC). The first step is to coat the steel with a nitride layer by means of physical vapour deposition (PVD), using at least one compound chosen from a group comprising TiN, AlN and CrN. The protective layer is formed in situ during the operation, i.e. in the molten carbonate electrolyte and involves the exchange of the nitride ions for oxide ions. The resulting layer is chemically stable under anodic and cathodic conditions in molten carbonate fuel cells. <IMAGE>
