Den foreliggende opfindelse angår et overfladeovertræksmateriale bestående af en vandig dispersion af 10-70 vægtprocent af et vanduopløseligt, harpiksholdigt bindemiddel af syntetiske additionspolymere fremkommet ved 5 vinylpolymerisation af monoethylenisk umættede monomere, og 0,1-1%, beregnet på materialets vægt, af en hydroxyalkylether som fortykkelsesmiddel samt eventuelt yderligere fyldstoffer og pigmenter.
Vandige dispersioner af vanduopløselige synteti-10 ske polymere har fundet udstrakt anvendelse som overfladeovertræksmaterialer, da de danner film, som har en udmærket kombination af fysiske egenskaber, da de ikke er behæftet med risiko for brændbarhed og opløsningsmiddeltoksicitet, og da de kan påføres fugtige overflader. Fortykkelsesmid-15 ler anvendes almindeligvis i disse vandige dispersioner for at stabilisere dem ved at inhibere sammensmeltning eller flokkulerlng af de dlspergerede partikler af det har-piksholdige bindemiddel samt for at give dem en velegnet viskositet til påføring ved sprøjtning, med pensel eller 20 med rulle. Fra fransk patentbeskrivelse nr. 1.490.938 kendes malingsfortykkelsesmidler, som er hydroxyalkylethere af alkylcellulose, f.eks. hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.
Fra tysk fremlæggelsesskrift nr. 1.468.014 kendes endvidere en fremgangsmåde til fremstilling af rene hydroxyalkyl-25 ethere af galactomannangummiarter, der kan anvendes som fortykkelsesmidler for tekstil- og trykfarver.
Det har nu vist sig, at der ved anvendelse af visse hydroxyalkylethere af guar gum som fortykkelsesmidler fås overfladeovertræksmaterialer, som har en bedre kombi-30 nation af fysiske egenskaber end de, der indeholder de hidtil kendte fortykkelsesmidler. I overensstemmelse hermed er overfladeovertræksmaterialet ifølge opfindelsen ejendommeligt ved, at fortykkelsesmidlet er en hydroxyalkylether af guar gum, hvori hydroxyalkylgruppen har 2-6 car-35 bonatomer, og det anvendte guar gum har en substitutionsgrad i området 0,5-2,0.
Den overraskende tekniske fordel ved overfladeovertræksmaterialerne ifølge opfindelsen i forhold til de kend- 145230 2 0 te overfladeovertræksmaterialer er, at anvendelsen af de anførte mængder fortykkelsesmiddel forøger overfladeovertræksmaterialernes viskositet i den ønskede grad, uden at der samtidig sker en forringelse af materialernes strømnings- og udjævningskarakteristika og fysiske egenskaber.
5 Overfladeovertræksmaterialerne ifølge opfindelsen forde ler sig glat og ensartet uden dannelse af "gardiner" eller klumper og har udmærkede flyde- og udjævningsegenskaber og vandbestandighed. I modsætning hertil har de kendte overfladeovertræksmaterialer, der indeholder hydroxyal-10 kylalkylcellulose som fortykkelsesmiddel, almindeligvis utilfredsstillende flyde- og udjævningsegenskaber.
Hydroxyalkyletherne af guar gum, som anvendes som fortykkelsesmiddel i overfladeovertræksmaterialet ifølge den foreliggende opfindelse, fremstilles ved omsætning 15 af guar gum med et alkylenoxid med 2-6 carbonatomer. Guar gum findes i endospermen i frø fra bælgplanten guar og er et polysaccharid, som hovedsagelig er sammensat af ga-lactoseenheder og mannoseenheder, som har gennemsnitlig 3 reaktionsdygtige hydroxylgrupper pr. enhed. I guar gum 20 er substitutionsgraden (D.S.) gennemsnitsantallet af sub stituerede hydroxylgrupper pr. anhydrohexoseenhed.
Omsætningen mellem guar gum og et alkylenoxid såsom ethylenoxid, propylenoxid, butylenoxid eller hexylenoxid, gennemføres sædvanligvis ved en temperatur på 25 20-l00°C ved et tryk på 1,055 - 9,14 ato og i nærværelse af en alkalisk katalysator såsom natriumhydroxid eller calciumhydroxid. Omsætningen gennemføres i nærværelse af vand og i de fleste tilfælde et organisk opløsningsmiddel såsom ethanol, isopropanol, tert.butanol, pentan 30 og heptan.
Forholdet mellem reaktanterne kan varieres over et bredt område, hvorved der fås produkter med varierende substitutionsgrad. Der fås tilfredsstillende produkter ved anvendelse af 0,5-2,0 ækvivalenter alkylenoxid pr.
35 anhydrohexoseenhed i guar gum. Disse produkter har substitutionsgrader i området 0,5-2,0. De foretrukne ethere til anvendelse som fortykkelsesmidler i de her omhandlede 0 145230 3 vandige overfladeovertræksmaterialer er hydroxyethylethe-re.
De dispersioner, som kan fortykkes ved tilsætning af hydroxyalkylethere af guar gum til dannelse af 5 materialer, der er anvendelige som overfladeovertræk, er vandige dispersioner, som indeholder harpiksholdige binde-midler, der er vanduopløselige syntetiske additionspolymere. Dispersionerne af additionspolymere fremstilles sædvanligvis ved emulsionspolymerisation af polymeriserbare 10 materialer af monoethylenisk umættet karakter. Eksempler på de polymere materialer, der kan anvendes som det harpiksholdige bindemiddel i de vandige dispersioner, er poly vinylacetat, copolymere af vinylacetat med ethylen, co-polymere af vinylacetat med maleinsyre- eller fumarsyre-15 estere af alkoholer med 1-8 carbonatomer, copolymere af vinylchlorid med vinylidenchlorid, polyethylen, polyiso-butylen, polystyren, copolymere af styren med butadien, copolymere af acrylonitril med butadien, copolymere af methacrylsyreestere af alkoholer med 1-8 carbonatomer med 20 vinylacetat, vinylchlorid, acrylonitril eller styren, copolymere af acrylsyreestere af alkoholer med 1-8 carbonatomer med vinylacetat, vinylchlorid, acrylonitril eller styren, copolymere af de ovenfor nævnte acrylsyreestere, methacrylsyreestere og acrylsyre eller methacrylsyre.
25 Der kræves kun en lav koncentration af fortykkel sesmidlet i de her omhandlede overfladeovertræksmaterialer. Den anvendte mængde fortykkelseSmiddel i overfladeovertræksmaterialerne er i høj grad afhængig af rheologi-en af den vandige dispersion og den ønskede viskositet i 30 produktet. Ved anvendelse af 0,1-1% fortykkelsesmiddel, beregnet på vægten af det vandige overfladeovertræksmateriale, opnås tilfredsstillende resultater.
Foruden det vanduopløselige, harpiksholdige bindemiddel og fortykkelsesmidlet kan de vandige overflade-35 overtræksmaterialer indeholde forskellige hjælpestoffer såsom emulgeringsmidler af anionisk, kationisk eller ikke-ionisk karakter, dispergeringsmidler, plasticerings- 0 145230 4 midler, pigmenter, strækkemidler, farvestoffer, skumdæmpende midler, bactericider og/eller fungicider, parfumelignende materialer, herunder neutraliserings- og maskeringsmidler, andre harpiksholdige materialer såsom alkyd-5 harpikser, tørrende olier og naturharpikser samt korrosionsinhibitorer. Disse materialer kan være til stede i de til disse formål almindeligvis anvendte mængder. Malinger, som indeholder vanduopløselige harpiksholdige bindemidler, 30-60% pigmenter og fyldstoffer samt de her 10 omhandlede fortykkelsesmidler har en særlig fordelagtig kombination af egenskaber.
De her omhandlede overfladeovertræksmaterialer er alkaliske og har sædvanligvis pH-værdier i området 7,0--9,5. Deres alkalitet kan eventuelt forøges ved tilsætning 15 af en passende mængde alkalisk opløsning såsom en vandig ammoniumhydroxidopløsning eller en vandig natriumhydroxidopløsning.
Hydroxyalkyletheren af guar gum, der anvendes som fortykkelsesmiddel, kan inkorporeres i overfladeovertræks-20 materialet ved en vilkårlig egnet fremgangsmåde. Den kan f.eks. kombineres med pigmenter, strækkemidler, disperge-ringsmidler eller andre additiver til dannelse af en pigmentfase, som derpå blandes med vand og den vandige dispersion af det harpiksholdige bindemiddel til dannelse af et 25 fortykket overfladeovertræksmateriale. Alternativt kan den sættes til en vandig dispersion indeholdende det harpiksholdige bindemiddel, pigment og additiver. Hydroxyalkyletheren kan sættes til overfladeovertræksmaterialets øvrige komponenter som sådan, eller den kan tilsættes som 30 en fortyndet vandig opløsning.
Overfladeovertræksmaterialet ifølge opfindelsen illustreres nærmere i de efterfølgende eksempler, hvori alle dele og procenter er på vægtbasis.
