Abstract

In filtering particles such as soot particles from an exhaust gas or a flue gas, a porous filter body built up from a particulate material is convenient. The filter is manufactured from a powder metal or a powdery material having metal-like properties, with a heat conductivity above 10 W/m<2>K and a porosity up to 50-90 per cent and a maximum pore size between 10-40 μm. This porous filter is characterised by having a high thermal conductivity, of greater than 5 W/m<2>K. According to the method, the exhaust gas is led through the filter body such that a filter cake is collected on the input side. The collected particles are oxidised either periodically or continuously, whereby heat is generated. The locally generated heat is carried away by the porous filter, such that the local temperature increase is moderate. Consequently the filter body is not subjected to disastrous heat stresses. A natural use of a porous filter body is in connection with a diesel engine in a vehicle emitting soot particle emissions. <IMAGE>
