Abstract

A mat made of synthetic rubber or other elastic material. In cross-section, the mat has a special geometric design, which means that the comfort characteristics of the mat can still be optimal, even if material with very great hardness is used. This gives freedom of choice when selecting material for manufacturing the mat, which allows all the desired applied characteristics to be optimised. The effect is obtained in that, under load, ribs on the upper side 1 of the mat are pressed down between ribs on the underside 2 of the mat, by means of which short sections 5 of an intermediate layer 3, which has ribs neither on the upper side nor on the underside, is exposed to a tensile force 8. Owing to the elastic characteristics of the material and the small thickness of the intermediate layer 3, comfort characteristics are achieved for the mat, which are otherwise achieved only by the use of far softer materials. <IMAGE>
