Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrical and thermal connector capable of establishing electrical contacts with printed or engraved conductors of a card as well as thermal contacts with a core or a metal or ceramic face of such a card.
- cards with printed or engraved conductors the support of which is made of a material which is a good conductor of heat, for example a sheet of steel or a sheet of aluminum.
- An insulating enamel layer generally covers both sides of the sheet, and electrical conductors are printed or engraved thereon by an appropriate technique so as to constitute one or more interconnection networks for one or more electrical circuits.
- This metal support is the thermal conductor of the card which effectively contributes to the cooling of the electrical circuit (s).
- thermal connection is posed in particular in electrical apparatus or equipment comprising a large number of electric circuit boards which it is desired either to interconnect both electrically and thermally, or to connect electrically to each other and thermally with a metallic mass to the interior of a frame in order to obtain better cooling of electrical circuits.
- the subject of the present invention is an electrical and thermal connector for cards comprising electrical and thermal conduction means, this connector comprising a card insertion corridor comprising at least one electrical connection conductor having at least one flexible contact end, and means for applying these ends to the electrical conduction means of the card, this connector further comprising a thermal energy conductor which is electrically insulated from at least the electrical connection conductor and intended to establish by mutual contact with a face of such a card a thermal connection, this thermal energy conductor being constituted by a longitudinal metal wing in a square, having a wall with a face for guiding and supporting the card, and which also serves to transmit thermal energy, this wall being separated by the insertion corridor from a longitudinal wing wall of insulating material which is parallel to it.
- the metal wing comprises a transverse base wall with respect to the previous wall and the upper face of which is joined with the lower face of a transverse base wall of the insulating wing.
- the metal base wall has a longitudinal bore and the insulating transverse base wall has an insulating projection which is fitted into the bore, this projection being crossed by at least one protruding end of a connection conductor.
- the present invention also relates to a connection plug which can be plugged into the previous connector and is intended to be mounted on an edge of such a card, this plug comprising electrical conductors in the form of metal wires or strips and a thermal energy conductor which is insulated from the electrical conductors carried by the plug and which is made of a material with high thermal conductivity.
- Figure 1 is a view of a cross section along the plane AB of Figure 2 of a preferred form of a connector according to the invention.
- a first longitudinal wing 21 of the connector is formed by the square junction of a wall 2la high and a wall 21b of longitudinal base. This wing is molded from an electrically insulating material.
- a row of electrical connection conductors 24 crosses the thickness of the wall 21b as well as a longitudinal projecting part 28 on the external face of the wall 21b.
- a second longitudinal wing 22 is formed by the squaring of a high wall 22a and a wall 22b of longitudinal base. It is made of a material of high thermal conductivity preferably chosen from copper, aluminum and steel.
- the projecting part 28 is fixed in a longitudinal bore 27 of the wall 22b.
- the lower face of the wall 21b and the upper face of the wall 22b are applied one on the other and the lateral end of the wall 21b is contiguous with the internal face of the wall 22a.
- the assembly can be done by any suitable means, such as screws, rivets, or glue. More simply, one can fit the projecting part 28 by forcing it in the hole 27 provided in the metal bracket 22.
- connection conductors 24 can be of the type of wires, strips, or tabs traditionally used in conventional connectors for connecting printed circuit boards. It is known that these conductors 24 often have a slightly arched flexible upper end which rests on one or the other of the longitudinal walls of the connector. In the present case, it is preferable for it to be a part of the insulating wall 2 near the insertion corridor 23 provided for inserting a card 30 which can be inserted.
- the transverse interval between the internal face of the wall 22a and the arched ends of the conductors 24 is calculated so that the flexible conductors 24 are pressed against conductors 30b carried by the card 30 inserted in the connector 20.
- These slides 25 are elastic in a direction transverse to the longitudinal corridor 23 for insertion. They are preferably made during the molding of the wing 21 of plastic material; they could also be constituted by a thin sheet which would be hung on the wall 21a by screws or rivets.
- This connector can receive an insertable card, for example of the type constituted by a sheet of steel which is covered at least on one of its faces by a layer of enamel on which the electrical conductors 30b are printed.
- an insertable card for example of the type constituted by a sheet of steel which is covered at least on one of its faces by a layer of enamel on which the electrical conductors 30b are printed.
- the back 30a of the card 30 will be applied, under the pressure of the flexible conductors 24 and by the elastic slides 25 against the internal face of the metal wall 22a.
- the back 30a of the card having a metal surface, the thermal energy of the electrical circuit mounted on the card will be partially dissipated by the sheet and partially transmitted from the sheet into the metal flange 22 of the connector.
- thermal energy can be conveyed further, for example by fixing the outer face of the walls 22a and 22b against an element of a metal frame serving as a thermal collector. In this way, the cooling of the card and its electrical circuit is greatly improved.
- FIG. 3 shows that the connector according to the invention is also applicable to cards of the plug-in type when these are provided with a connection plug 40 matched to the preceding mixed connector.
- connection plug 40 is then fixed in the manner shown, to the edge of a card 41 with a metal wall 41a.
- An insulating wall 42 of the plug 40 is applied to the edge of the face carrying the conductors 43 of the card 41.
- conductors 44 for electrical connection of the plug 40 made in the form of sections of son or lamellae with controlled flexibility of known type.
- the ends 44a of these are in contact, for example by welding, with the conductors 43 printed or engraved on the card 41.
- Opposite ends 44b are directed along an external face of the insulating wall 42 and anchored to that -this. Thus, they can make contact respectively with the conductors 47 of a connector .46 with a metallic thermal wall 48 of the type described above.
- the plug 40 also has a metal wall 45 intended to be applied against the internal face of the thermal wall 48 of the connector 46 during its insertion.
- the wall 45 can be provided with projecting parts 45a which are embedded by overmolding in the insulating wall 42. It is fixed to the back of the metal wall 4 of the card 41 by suitable means such as screws, rivets or glue.
- the mixed connector described above can be equipped with a known system for supporting the connector connection conductors on the card conductors, a system similar to those shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 4, 5a and 5b, so as to constitute types of mixed connectors with zero insertion force.
- a cam rotation system 61 of known type can be adapted to them (FIG. 4) which presses flexible upper ends of connection conductors 62 onto conductors 67 printed or engraved with a card 65 engaged in a connector 60 The pressure is then exerted transversely to a metal wall 63, and a metal face 66 of the card 65 will therefore be applied to an internal face 63a of the wall 63.
- the connectors and plugs described above are capable of simultaneously transporting electrical energy and thermal energy and of being used in an electrical interconnection system and thermal.
- FIG. 6 shows by way of example an electrical and thermal interconnection system in which a "daughter" card 80 of rectangular surface, with metallic face 81, is mounted on the one hand by its longitudinal edges in card guides 82 and on the other hand, is fixed by a lateral edge to a plug 83 of a kind described above.
- This plug 83 is engaged in a mixed connector 84, a base wall of which is applied to a master card 85 of a type similar to those mentioned on page 1.
- This master card 85 can carry an electrical circuit on this same side isolated by an enamel or on the other side.
- the electrical connection conductors 86 of the connector 84 then pass through holes in the master card 85 which are coated with an insulating layer and they are connected to the electrical circuit directly or through the conductors printed or engraved on the card.
- One or more metallic elements such as parts of a chassis 87, 88 can also be connected, as shown, to the master card 85.
- metal as the material constituting the thermal wall of the connector or of the plug matching the connector.
- a wall made of another material with good thermal conduction such as ceramic for example could also be used.
- FIGS. 7A and 7B show a variant of the connector according to the invention before and after insertion of a card 103.
- flexible conductors 101 are also applied strongly by a cam 100 on the conductive face 104 of the card 103 engaged in the connector and whose heat sink 105 has been brought into contact with the thermal conductor 106 of the connector.
- thermal well 110 on which is mounted, the thermal conductor 106 of the connector.
- This thermal well may be a metal plate possibly cooled by a cold fluid.
- the conductors 101 may for example be of one of the types shown in FIG. 8a or 8b.
- they are formed in a flexible metal strip 112 slightly bent in the transverse direction, and which has been cut to obtain fixing tabs 113 which are then bent at approximately right angles to the side band concave.
- Contact tabs 114 which remain after cutting, between slots 115 then form the ends of the conductors of the connector which are connected for example by welding 111 with the conductors 108 to establish a ground contact or an electrical supply to the card.
- the fixing tabs 113 are made integral with the wing 116 molded from insulating material, for example by overmolding with plastic material used for molding the wing 116.
- the electrical connector must be of the individual multicontact type, it will be fitted with the conductors 101 shown in FIG. 8b.
- the latter can be obtained simply by a transverse sectioning along a slot 115 of a strip similar to the previous 112, possibly before folding the tongues 113.
- the tongues 117 are then anchored in a longitudinal groove 118 formed in the wall of the wing 116, for example by gluing with a plastic material, or are fixed as previously by overmolding of plastic material .
- FIG. 9 represents a variant of the connector comprising flexible connection conductors comprising two fixing tabs 120 and 121 both anchored in a connector body 124 completely made of a material which is a very good conductor of heat, for example metallic.
- the two tongues 120 and 121 are electrically insulated either by sheathing or by coating with plastic material.
- the upper contact ends of the conductors 119 can be applied for example by a cam 122 of insulating material, against the conductors printed on a face of the drain card or thermal wall inserted in the connector.
- the strip 119 with contacts 121 can be connected to a ground or an electrical appliance by establishing an electrical connection by electrical connection means such as soldered wires, riveted wires, sockets connected to a longitudinal end of the conductor 119.
- a strip 119 with contacts 121, similar to the strip 112 is the verification of the establishment of thermal contact between the card and the thermal wall of the connector.
- a strip 119 comprising for example two contacts 121 and to apply them by the cam 122 to two studs carried by the card so as to close an electrical control circuit.
- the invention is easily applicable to all connectors for printed circuit boards of the kind mentioned on page 1, comprising in particular a wall surface or a metallic core, even if these are protected or coated with a plastic film or coated with an electrically insulating metal oxide layer.
