- the nut and the spring are wound-on along the conduit to a desired location and the rotation force relaxed, whereupon the spring returns to a configuration stiffly engaging the conduit, thereby restraining rotation of the nut arising from, for example, vibration, by interaction between the bent-out end lengths 16, 18 and the lug 12 in the recess.
- a nut-running machine may be used to apply torque to the nut during an initial threading-on operation. For subsequent adjustments the nut is rotated manually.
- the torque required to effect rotation is determined by the stiffness of the spring 14 and the number of turns of the spring and that either or both of these may be varied to produce a requisite resistance to rotation of the nut.
