- Fig. 1 The cooling air is drawn in by fan 3 via air duct 2 through water cooler 1 (and, if present, charge air cooler 5). It leaves the fan at a low pressure ratio on the fan in a predominantly axial direction V 1 and at a higher pressure ratio (due to the design of the water cooler 1, or by connecting a charge air cooler 5) in accordance with V 2 with a strong radial speed component. The air then flows freely around the engine 4. In this arrangement, the fan usually protrudes somewhat out of the air duct 2 at the rear.
