Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the separation and recovery of halogenated hydrocarbons from aqueous systems by means of liquid-liquid extraction.
- Halogenated hydrocarbons are contained in many wastewater and wash water, which come from metal washing and pickling plants, for example, where they are used in particular to degrease metal parts.
- halogenated hydrocarbons such as chloroform or 1,1,1-trichloroethane
- halogenated hydrocarbons e.g. wastewater treatment by activated sludge, as they virtually destroy the sludge.
- the object of the invention is to overcome the difficulties outlined and to develop a method with which halogenated hydrocarbons can be recovered simply and reliably from aqueous systems and, at the same time, a purified aqueous system can be obtained without any additional pollutants.
- the object is achieved in a process of the type defined in the introduction that the aqueous systems loaded with halogenated hydrocarbons are brought into contact with an aromatic-free paraffin fraction, which preferably boils in a range from 180 to 220 ° C., and in that the organic phase follows Phase separation is separated by distillation into the halogenated hydrocarbons and the paraffin fraction.
- the paraffin fraction can consist of n-paraffins as well as iso-paraffins and mixtures thereof.
- the solubility of the paraffins in water is less than 1 ppm; pure undecane, for example, is only 30 ppb soluble in water. Another important factor is the complete physiological safety of such paraffin fractions and the low price of these products in technical quality.
- the extractant can be handled at the workplace without any health risk and does not pose a burden on the environment even in large quantities.
- the treated wastewater (raffinate) can be discharged into the receiving water or used without further treatment.
- the paraffin fraction used is also characterized by extremely high distribution coefficients of the halogenated hydrocarbons when it is distributed between the paraffin fraction and water.
- the distribution coefficient is always a much larger value than 1 for all systems.
- the volume ratio of extractant to the aqueous phase can be varied within a wide range, parameters such as distribution equilibrium, inlet and outlet concentration of the halogenated hydrocarbons in both phases, apparatus load and physiologically and economically necessary and possible limit values being decisive.
- the method according to the invention ensures a very high degree of flexibility and universal applicability in all branches of industry.
- volume ver ratio of aqueous system loaded with halogenated hydrocarbons for the paraffin fraction to a value between 10 and 40.
- extraction and phase separation are carried out in a countercurrent column.
- the intensive mixing of the aqueous phase and the extractant can be promoted using special internals or stirrers.
- the use of countercurrent columns with mixing and resting zones, which are arranged alternately in the direction of the longitudinal axis, has proven to be particularly effective. At least partially coalescence of the dispersed extractant takes place in the quiet zones.
- the extractant In a rectification or regeneration column, the extractant always represents the bottom stream, which is why, viewed as a whole, only a comparatively small amount of thermal energy is required in the process according to the invention.
- both streams fall, e.g. both the stream of halogenated hydrocarbons, which is drawn off at the top of the regeneration column, and the stream of the paraffin fraction from the bottom region of the rectification column in high purity and can be used again immediately.
- the method according to the invention is illustrated by means of an embodiment in the method diagram shown in the figure.
- An aqueous system loaded with halogenated hydrocarbons passes from a line 1 into an extraction column designated by 2.
- pure extractant is passed via line 3 into column 2.
- the aqueous phase freed from halogenated hydrocarbons is drawn off through line 4.
- the extractant loaded with the halogenated hydrocarbons - the paraffin fraction - is fed via line 5 to a rectification column 6, in which the separation into the halogenated hydrocarbons and the paraffin fraction takes place.
- the on this Halogenated hydrocarbons recovered from the aqueous system leave the top of column 6 via line 7 and are recycled.
- the regenerated extractant passes directly from the bottom region of column 6 through line 3 into countercurrent column 2.
- Waste water with a load of 0.74 g of 1,1,1-trichloroethane per 1 was brought into contact with extractant in a two-stage countercurrent mixer-settler system.
- the volume ratio wastewater / extractant was 5. After the first stage, a 1,1,1-trichloroethane content of 15.6 ppm and after the second stage a content of 2.5 ppm were found in the wastewater.
- the extractant content in the purified wastewater could not be determined by gas chromatography.
- Waste water with a loading of 2.3 g of chloroform per 1 was brought into contact with extractant in a two-stage countercurrent mixer-settler system.
- the volume ratio of waste water / extractant was 10.
- a chloroform content of 150 ppm was found after the first stage and less than 10 ppm after the second stage.
- the content of extractant in the extracted wastewater could not be determined by gas chromatography.
- wash water with a load of 0.7 g of 1,1,1-trichloroethane per 1 was brought into contact with the extractant in a countercurrent column.
- the set ratio of the volumetric flow rates of wash water / extractant was 30. No more 1,1,1-trichloroethane could be found in the extracted wash water drawn off from the column.
- the extractant content in the wash water could not be determined by gas chromatography.

Abstract
