Definitions
- the invention relates to a continuous casting mold in which an electromagnetic inductor determines the cross-sectional dimensions of the molten metal strand to be solidified.
- molten metal is poured at a predetermined speed onto a start-up floor attached within a loop-shaped electrical inductor.
- the approach floor is lowered at a speed adapted to the casting rate.
- High-frequency alternating current in the inductor generates an electromagnetic force field which limits the metal melt introduced inside the inductor horizontally in a form which is essentially determined by the inner contours of the inductor loop.
- a coolant such as water
- Such systems usually have a tapering electromagnetic shield. This is attached coaxially inside the inductor and consists of a non-ferromagnetic metal (for example stainless steel). Due to its shape, this screen serves to weaken the magnetic field above the inductor, so that the electromagnetic forces constricting the cross section of the bar head are reduced.
- Electromagnetic continuous casting molds are complex and costly, especially due to the narrow dimensional tolerances that must be observed during the production of the molds.
- the numerous different cast ingot formats also entail the uneconomical need to keep a correspondingly large number of molds in stock.
- An electromagnetic continuous casting mold with a variable resulting casting cross section would therefore be highly desirable; different formats could be made with a mold.
- a conventional continuous casting mold with adjustable additional mold end walls is known from DE-AS 1 059 626 from Kotthaus.
- the task and structure of a conventional continuous casting mold differ fundamentally from that of an electromagnetic continuous casting mold; thus there is no possibility of transmission.
- the mold is used to dissipate the heat of fusion through contact with the melt.
- it forms the vessel wall for the melt and must therefore be leakproof over its entire circumference.
- the electromagnetic mold does not come into contact with the melt. It is used to conduct current in a defined manner and also contains devices for additionally influencing the magnetic field.
- the inventor has therefore set himself the task of creating an electromagnetic continuous casting mold which enables a change in the resulting casting cross section.
- the construction of this mold should be relatively simple and its production economical.
- the adjustment of the mold should be possible in a simple manner.
- the mold should allow the production of cast ingots with side surfaces that are as flat as possible.
- an electromagnetic continuous casting mold with a pair of opposite stationary side walls and a pair of opposite movable end walls leads, which are approximately at a right angle to the side walls and together with these side walls form the mold opening.
- locking elements are attached to at least one of the end walls, which enable the optional positioning and fastening of these end walls at predetermined locations on the side walls in order to change the dimensions of the mold opening.
- the inductor and the screen form a closed loop between the corresponding parts of the side and end walls by means of electrical contact connections (by means of clamping devices).
- the side walls are segmented in order to ensure the formation of essentially flat side surfaces of the cast ingots.
- the mold according to the invention has a simple construction and is relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
- the mold 10 shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 has a pair of opposing side walls 12 divided into segments and a pair of movable end walls 14, which together form a mold opening 16. Between the ends of the end walls 14 and the side walls 12 there is a gap of, depending on the position, 1 1/2 to 13 mm width.
- the extension 18 of the end walls 14 can slide on the upper surface of the side walls 12.
- a spring-loaded locking hook 20 is attached to each extension 18 of the end walls 14 and fits into the openings 22, which are provided at certain locations on the upper surface of the side walls 12; the end walls 14 can thus be attached at the desired locations along the side walls 12.
- the locking element 20, shown in Figure .2, comprises a housing 50 which is inserted into a recess 52 in the extension 18.
- the pin 56 is supported in a chamber 54 of the housing 50; this is provided with a flange 58, against which a spring 60 is locked, so that the pin 56 is held out of the opening 22.
- a slot 64 in the upper part 62 of the housing 50 receives a cross bar 66 attached to the pin 56.
- the pin 56 is held against the force of the spring 60 in the opening 22 in order to secure the end walls 14 at the desired location on the side walls 12.
- the side wall 12 of the mold 10 shown in FIG. 3 contains a mold frame 24, to which an insulation body 26 is fastened with screws 28. On the insulation body 26 is provided with screws 34 an I nduzzysschleife 30, versenen with a cooling channel 32 is fixed.
- An electro-magnetic screen 36 is attached to the mold frame 24 with screws 37, which leaves a gap 38 to the induction loop 30 so that a cooling jet from the water chamber 40 reaches the surface of the cast ingot via the passage opening 42.
- the end walls 14 of the mold 10 are constructed in the same way as the side walls 12.
- clamping devices 72 are mounted on the rear sides 70 of the end walls 14 in the vicinity of the side walls 12, in order to secure both the inductor parts 30 of the side walls 12 with the inductor parts of the end walls 14 and the shield parts 36 of the side walls 12 to be electrically connected to the shield parts of the end walls 14.
- Each of the clamping devices 72 contains a housing 74 with a bore 76, each of which has a plurality of bearings 78 in order to rotatably support a cylinder 80 therein.
- 2 cylinders are positively placed one above the other in the bore 76.
- 2 bores 82 and 82 ′ are let into the housing 74 and open into the bore 76 at a right angle.
- the cylinders 80 ' are provided with a slot 96 in which a tool for rotating the cylinders 80 and 80' can be attached, so that the clamping pistons 84 are pressed against the inductor parts 30.
- the parts of the screen 36 belonging to the movable end walls 14 are provided with an electrically conductive contact element 98 fastened thereon, which is pressed against the parts of the screen 36 belonging to the side walls 12 by means of clamping pistons 84.
- a further clamping device 100 is attached to the mold frame 14 in order to ensure good electrical contact between the induction loop 30 and the electrical connection (not shown).
- Lines 102 for the cooling liquid connect the cooling channels 32 of the induction loop 30.
- the side walls 12 of the mold 10 are divided according to the invention into segments which are at a small angle to one another, as a result of which a convex mold opening 16 is formed.
- the position of the end walls 14 with respect to the side walls 12, as shown in FIG. 1, represents the best possible case with regard to the production of flat side surfaces of the cast ingots. This is impaired by moving the end walls 14 of the mold 10 from this position.
- the end walls 14 can thus be adjusted from this best position only within a region of the side walls 12 which comprises 25 to 35%, preferably 25 to 30%, of the total length of these side walls 12.
