I have found it useful to add such an alkali in three batches, each separated by about 5 to 15 minutes, typically adding from 0.003 to 0.006 grams of sodium bicarbonate per kilogram of fish skins in each batch.

Abstract
Il est possible d'obtenir des peaux de poissons tannées de bonne qualité a) en mettant en contact des peaux de poissons sèches avec une solution aqueuse d'un sel neutre, le pH de ladite solution étant ajusté entre 1,5 et 3,5, b) en soumettant lesdites peaux de poissons à une opération de tannage en deux étapes, où, après ladite première étape de tannage, lesdites peaux sont lavées à une température n'excédant pas 35oC et où la seconde étape de tannage est exécutée en utilisant une solution plus concentrée que celle de la première étape de tannage à une température qui n'est pas inférieure à 35oC, et c) en lavant les peaux tannées et en les traitant dans un bain aqueux avec une graisse anionique, puis une huile, puis un sel de métal alcalin d'un acide organique faible, enfin un alcali afin d'élever le pH jusqu'à 6 au moins.
