Definitions

  • This invention relates to the bagging of compressible materials, generally fibrous, and more particularly the bagging of mineral fibers in rolls, intended for example for insulation by glass fibers.
  • glass fiber or similar insulation rolls such a reference should be considered as typical, not limiting, in the sense that other materials having characteristics, in relation to bagging, similar to those of the glass fiber insulation rollers can also be treated with the method and apparatus of the present invention.
  • insulation pockets preferably in the form of large mesh pockets allowing the passage of air during compression
  • whose configurations could be those of cushions, or others, and which, for for the purposes of this invention, are to be considered sufficiently cylindrical and roller like to be treated according to this invention.
  • this invention is preferably used to compress the roll-shaped parts during packaging, compression is not an essential activity, in the sense that, depending on the dimensions of the part to be packaged, it would be conceivable to carry out bagging according to this invention without involving compression.
  • the present invention aims to provide a new method and a new apparatus for compressing rolls (including shaped parts similar to rollers) of glass fiber insulation, starting from glass fiber insulation rolls generally cylindrical, having a first diametrical dimension, then compressing these rollers, in a strictly uniform manner, in order to obtain rolls of reduced diametral dimension, always of generally cylindrical configuration.
  • Such rollers have the reduced diametric dimension, some means of preserving the dimension, such as a sheath or pocket, or other suitable containment structure, are applied to the rollers, in order to keep them at the reduced dimension .
  • Other particularly original characteristics of the present invention are also proposed, such as the various delivery devices and mechanisms, the various components of a relay area, in which one or more rollers can be selected, set apart, or combined. for simultaneous compression and packaging, as well as a particularly original compression technique and device.
  • an apparatus is used to compress and bag rolls of compressible material of generally cylindrical shape or of similar articles comprising a compression enclosure having a first wall movable in a direction parallel to itself to reduce the dimensions, a device for unloading the compressed rollers and a device for keeping the compressed state in the rolls, maintaining them and facilitating the application of conservation devices of reduced dimensions (see US-A-3,964,232).
  • the apparatus is characterized in that it comprises a delivery device for supplying the compression enclosure with sets of rollers in their original dimensions, the compression enclosure having at least a second movable wall allowing the rollers to be compressed in a second direction,
  • a particular advantage of the present invention lies in the fact that the compressed insulation roll thus formed is of considerably reduced size, with a minimum of fiber breaks and with a significant elimination of localized fiber breaks, with a high degree of recovery. '' a uniform thickness, with a significant reduction in freight and storage costs for the final product, with reduced handling costs during bagging, and with reduced costs of packaging materials, due to the fact that a larger roller, largely uncompressed.
  • the bagging apparatus of the present invention is generally designated by the number 10, including the feed zone 11, two zones 12 and 13 and two zones 14 and 15 dedicated to the application of sheaths, bagging devices or other suitable confinement means to keep the compressed rollers in their compressed state, after which the rollers are sent to the zones evacuation conveyors, 16 and 17 respectively.
  • the feed zone 11 comprises a hoist or lifting device 18, a lateral conveyor apparatus 20 and a longitudinal conveyor apparatus 21.
  • the freight elevator or lifting device 18 which is shown having at its lower end a lifting plate 22, designed to receive a roll of fiberglass insulation 23 or a similar article, for example in the rolling position on an anterior spoiler 24 of said plate, to be wedged between the inclined surfaces 25 and 26 of said plate.
  • the plate 22 is carried in a movable guide frame 27, consisting of a horizontal crosspiece 28 and two vertical posts 30 and 31 which, in turn, are braced by suitable struts, 32 and 33, in order to ensure the rigidity during movement.
  • a movable guide frame 27 consisting of a horizontal crosspiece 28 and two vertical posts 30 and 31 which, in turn, are braced by suitable struts, 32 and 33, in order to ensure the rigidity during movement.
  • pivoting devices 34 and 35 are provided which engage with the possibility of rotation in the plate 22, in order to allow the pivoting movement of the plate 22 relative to the gantry 27 .
  • the portal frame 27 is in turn supported with the possibility of vertical movement with respect to a fixed frame 36.
  • the fixed frame 36 includes vertical supports 37 and 38 which also act as guides for movement with suitable rollers or the like 40 serving to advance and guide the frame 27 in its vertical movement, while the rollers 40 pass through the interior guide walls 38 'and 38 ".
  • roller 23 when reference is made to a roller 23, at this stage of the explanation, it is understood that the roller has hitherto been uncompressed and may, for example, have a diameter of 1 meter or more. It will also be understood that, when reference is made here to a roller, the roller may in fact be a "set of rollers", comprising one or more of such rollers placed end to end (longitudinally) and, in such a case , they will generally have been made from the same mat which has been cut, one or more of the rollers having been simultaneously wound, from the flat mat configuration to a roll configuration.
  • the article (s) to be bagged may initially be of various shapes, either in pockets or of similar type, and there may be one, or several arranged end to end.
  • such articles will be referred to here as “sets of shaped parts”, although it is understood that this invention is especially usable for the treatment of sets of rollers.
  • the conveyor belt 45 can be driven by an appropriate power source.
  • the set of rollers thus delivered actually comprises two rollers, arranged end to end, but otherwise independent, apart from a possible impact of the glass fibers from the end of a roll on the fibers of the immediately neighboring roll, it is possible that the rollers R 1 and R 2 come to separate, so that one of the rollers, for example R 1 ' will go in front of the other roller R 2 .
  • an alignment rod 48 is provided, carried by suitable vertical supports 51 and 52, adjustable in height. The function of the alignment rod 48 consists, in the event that any of the rollers R 1 and R 2 is out of alignment, as shown in FIG.
  • the conveyor 20 can be controlled to drive the rollers to the left, towards the area of the longitudinal conveyor 21. If the process is automatic, suitably arranged photocells can be used to detect the alignment of the rollers R 1 and R 2 , with a view to continuing the transport of the rollers along the upper train 45 of the conveyor 20.
  • the roller or the rollers are, immediately after, delivered to the zone of the longitudinal conveyor 21 or, as shown in FIG. 3, they fall on an appropriate slide 54, then on the upper train 55 of said conveyor, stopping against an adjustable stop rod ad hoc 56.
  • the rod 56 can be adjustable in height by means of any ad hoc device, not shown, in order to actuate a stop for dimensions of rolls of various diameters, and will generally be preset for a given diametral dimension of the roller to be treated. °
  • the operator can make a choice, at his convenience, according to the desired diameter and according to the number of rollers to be included inside a final bagging.
  • the zone of the longitudinal conveyor 21 has a generally larger section, 57, driven forward, and a rear section 58, which can be driven as desired.
  • the separation zone 61 between the conveyors 57 and 58 for the conveyor zone 21 can be moved longitudinally (either towards the top, either down, as shown in Figure 1), by acting on a crank handle 63, so that the entire area of the conveyor 21 can be moved in one direction, either towards the 'forward or backward, by grasping the crank 63 and moving it clockwise or counterclockwise, in order to place the separation zone 61 in various positions longitudinally.
  • the crank 63 will rotate a pinion gear 64 carried by a fixed frame structure 65, the pinion gear 64 engaging the teeth of a rack 66 which is carried by a movable frame structure 67 of the area of the conveyor 21 and therefore drives the area of the conveyor 21 in the longitudinal direction, as mentioned above.
  • suitable guide rollers 68 or the like can be provided to ensure smooth movement.
  • FIG. 4 in which the roller or the rollers (which includes the set of rollers) have now been sent, by means of the conveyor 57, to an ejection location, between the two compression zones 12 and 13, as shown by the set of dotted rollers in FIG. 4.
  • the longitudinal movement of the conveyor 57 is stopped, either by the operator if the process is carried out manually, or preferably upon encountering a suitable stop trigger, such as an end switch or a photocell PC
  • the selection is then authorized, allowing the roller R to be ejected towards one of the compression zones 12 or 13.
  • the zone (or the apparatus) 12 is that which is intended to receive the set of rollers R.
  • a cylinder 70 will then be started, bringing its piston 71 inward, and causing the lateral unloading of the set of rollers R by pivoting a push or eject lever 72 around a pivot 73, so that its ejection rod 74 comes into contact with the cylindrical surface of the set of rollers R when the ejection member 72 is moved according to the direction of arrow 75 in FIG.
  • the door 78 can be closed, by means of a suitable photocell or by intervention of an operator on an assisted door closing system, such as a pneumatically controlled cylinder 82 or a similar device.
  • the set of rollers R is compressed, from its generally cylindrical configuration, with a first diametrical dimension, as shown in FIG. 4, to a flattened oval configuration, - as shown in the figure 6, - which completely fills the cavity 85 -, such compression being exerted between the front door 78 and the rear wall 86 of the compression enclosure.
  • the lower end of the door 78 has a concave curve, as shown in 87, - the curve representing exactly a quarter of a cylinder theoretical, so that when the door 78 is closed by pivoting it about the axis 88, as mentioned above, the curved surface 87 of the door will adjust to the corresponding curved surface 90 at the lower end of the rear wall 86 of the compression enclosure, so that between the two curved surfaces 87 and 90, there appears an exactly complete semi-cylindrical surface.
  • a compression cylinder 91 can be actuated when the operator acts on a pair of control cylinders 92 in order to drive downward, exactly vertically, the compression cylinder 91, in the direction of the arrows 93 represented in FIGS. 4 and 5.
  • the cylinders 92 although preferably being actuated by an operator, can also be driven automatically under the effect of suitable photocells, once the play rollers R is in place in the enclosure 85.
  • the compression cylinder 91 therefore moves from a position as shown in solid lines at the upper end of FIG. 5, to the dotted position shown in a corresponding manner and, in so doing, compresses the set of rollers R in the enclosure 85, to a compact cylindrical configuration, as shown in FIG. 7.
  • the lower surface 94 of the jack 91 is configured so as to adopt a generally semi-cylindrical geometry, exactly of the final dimension desired for the set of rollers R in its compressed state.
  • the surface 94 is relayed by surface segments 95 of the buffer elements 96, carried by the jack 91.
  • the buffer surfaces 95 are also curved in arcs in order to complete the semi-cylindrical configuration. affected by the entire cylinder.
  • the material of structure of the pad 96 must generally have a low coefficient of friction, like a thermoplastic material, in order to sweep by sliding the vertical walls 77 or 86 during the vertical downward movement of the jack 91.
  • the surfaces 95 of the pads 96 can be cut planar, all the more since they occupy a segment of the cylindrical surface having a very slight cord, in fact, wear helping, they will be able to approach of a segment in the arc of a cylinder.
  • the material based on glass fibers will be compressed against the interior surfaces 95 of the pads 96 and will press them, outwards, against the surfaces of walls 77 or 86 of the cavity 85, and thus will keep the pads 96 in close sliding contact with the walls 77 or 86.
  • the pads 96 are mounted by means of several styling head screws or similar devices 97, housed in the vertical slots 98 in the pads 96 and secured by threads with the jack 91.
  • the vertical slots 98 allow a certain amount of play vertical adjustment, up or down, in the direction of the arrow with two points 100, shown in Figure 8.
  • Such adjustment can be made by means of several manual adjustment screws 101, engaged by their threads in mounting blocks 102 which, in turn, are carried by the jack 91, - the lower ends of the screws, ⁇ as shown in Figure 8, being, in turn, secured captively with their upper ends of the pads 96, as shown in 103.
  • the pads 96 can be adjusted, generally downward, in order to compensate for wear against their surface 95.
  • the pads 96 will be replaced during that the wear will become too great and, in order to adapt to the wear, the pads have an incision, as shown in 99.
  • roller set was compressed to a generally cylindrical geometry, of reduced diametrical dimension.
  • FIG. 5 in which a pneumatic cylinder or a similar device 105 will generally be actuated by an operator, with a view to causing an unloading cylinder 106 to unload from a compression enclosure the set of compressed rollers R
  • Such an invention may as well be automatic or controlled by an operator, depending on option.
  • it will generally be desirable to already have a member in place to maintain the set of compressed rollers at its reduced diametrical dimension.
  • an advanced discharge compartment 107 is provided at the left end of the compression enclosure presented in FIG. 5, compartment suitably sized to receive the set of compressed rollers.
  • the discharge compartment 107 is generally a cylindrical tubular structure, carried by the wall 108 of the compression enclosure and it is suitable for receiving on it a sheath 110, made of thermoplastic material, paper or the like, preferably with a part 111 of the sheath projecting beyond the end 112 of the discharge compartment.
  • a signal can be launched, either manually, or by means of an appropriate photocell (not shown), or in other similar manner, to signal the operator of the equipment it is time to activate the cylinder 105. Then the cylinder 105 will send the unloading cylinder 106 to the left, as shown in FIG.
  • the jack 106 will have a plate 116 sized to adapt, in a tight sliding situation, along the cylindrical wall of the interior of the compression enclosure 85, when the jack 106 progresses in its movement and the sliding plate 106 will also preferably be made from a thermoplastic or other material that can easily slide relative to the structural material of the compression enclosure.
  • the stroke length chosen or pre-programmed by the jack 106 will be such as to push a first set of rollers R within the discharge compartment 107 by an amount sufficient for the most before the first set of rollers advances just before the end 112 of the discharge compartment, in order to prevent the sheath from being prematurely expelled from the discharge compartment and so that, when the jack 106 pushes a second set of rollers R within of the discharge compartment 107, said second set of rollers R, moving forward, forces the first set of compressed rollers R, moving to the left, to carry with it the tubular packaging 110, sliding to the left on the outside of the discharge compartment 107, so that the entire bagged package is sent to the transport rollers 120 from one of the transport zones 16 or 17.
  • the size of the final packaging may vary, according to the limitations on the output relating to the compression enclosure and its discharge compartment. While the present invention is particularly intended to provide bags for one or more rollers, it is not limited to any particular diameter, said diameter being determined by the choice of the diameter of the discharge compartment, by the dimension in cross section of the 'compression enclosure, etc ... Similarly, it will be understood that the apparatus. can be used for bagging shaped parts which may or may not be rollers, but which will not have a transverse dimension greater than the diameter of the cylindrical cavity delimited when the jack 91 is in the position of FIG.
