- the object of the invention is to propose an apparatus for surfacing these edges, which is of simple design (and in particular very easily adaptable to any contour of stele), while being sufficiently developed to allow to reduce as much as possible the adaptations and handling between the different surfacing passes.
- the invention therefore relates to a machine for milling and polishing an edge of a piece of hard material with predetermined outline, such as for example a granite or marble stele, characterized in that it comprises a support of said part provided with means for blocking the latter and a grinding unit subject to move as a whole along first guide means arranged in the vicinity of said support and in that said grinding unit comprises a pivoting turret provided with several grinding tools of different roughness, to present the different tools in a predetermined order of decreasing roughness in contact with the edge of said part.

- the turret 32 is cantilevered at one end of the carriage 25. it is actuated by a motor 38 integral with the carriage 25.
- the shaft of this motor carries a pinion 39, which is engaged with a toothed crown 40 secured to the turret.
- the latter which thus pivots about a horizontal axis, is lockable in a number of predetermined angular positions, corresponding to the working positions of the various tools. Changes of tool in the machine, between the different finishing passes, thus require a minimum of time.
- the support 11 comprises a receiving plate 41 for supporting the part 12.
- This receiving plate consists of a cylindrical external part 42, hollow, housing a ball plate 43, vertically movable under the action of a jack 44 supporting said ball plate.
- This conventional arrangement allows easy positioning of the part to be polished on edge, when the ball plate is in the high position, slightly above the upper edge of the cylindrical part 42. Then, the ball plate is lowered and the part ( here, the stele 12) rests on said cylindrical part 42.
- a jack 45 secured to an upper support 46 is provided with a support pad 47, which comes into contact with the upper surface of the part 12 to confirm the fixing of this part on the support 11.

- the sensors 56 are, in this case, mounted on a retractable support (not shown) so as not to impede the rotation of the turret 32 when replacing one grinding tool with another.
- each sensor 56a. 56b controls the rotation of the motor 52 in one direction or the other, respectively, when it is actuated.
- the more pronounced curvature C of the edge 30 to be polished will cause actuation of the sensor 56b, since the grinding tool is kept in permanent contact with the edge 30.
- the arrangement of sensors 56a, 56b can also be mounted at the template 55 on either side of the axis of the grinding tool in use, that is to say structurally , on either side of the probe 21 to cooperate with the edge of the template and fulfill the same control function of the motor 52.
