  • a method of providing a door or vehicle body with a hinge leaf comprising providing an aperture in a supporting wall of the door or vehicle body, inserting a hinge leaf body portion through the aperture, positioning and securing the body portion in a desired position with a portion projecting outwardly to which at least one hinge pin boss is secured, locating a cover plate between the boss and the supporting wall to cover said aperture and securing the or each boss to the cover plate and securing the cover plate to the marginal portion of the supporting wall which surrounds said aperture.
  • the hinge leaf according to the present invention is simple to construct, can be produced in large numbers whilst accommodating manufacturing tolerances to thereby enable accurate assembly, and additionally provides a design of hinge leaf which possesses adequate strength for use with doors or tailgates having sealed hollow sections having limited available space.
  • the tailgate 1 a portion only of which is shown, has a sealed hollow section 2 within which one hinge leaf, the 'female' leaf 3 of a mounting hinge 10 is secured by welding.
  • the main body of the leaf 3 passes through an aperture formed in wall 2a of section 2.
  • the hinge leaf 3 has a cover plate 4 which completely covers the aperture in wall 2a and which is welded on to the outside of the hollow section by a line of continuous weld 14 which extends continuously around the periphery of the cover plate 4 to sealingly secure the plate 4 to an external face of the supporting wall 2a which forms part of the sealed hollow section 2.

  • the main body of the hinge leaf 3 is formed as a plate having a first body portion 3a including two projections 20 at one end thereof and a second portion 3b which is welded to the interior of the hollow section 2 along its terminal edge 3c by a line of weld 3d.
  • the first portion 3a extends generally in a plane containing the pivot axis of the hinge whereas the second portion 3b extends in a general transverse direction to said plane. Accordingly the securance of the terminal end of body portion 3b provides considerable resistance against twisting of the body portion about the pivot axis caused by the weight of the door.
  • the cover plate 4 is formed by stamping or pressing with two apertures 21 which correspond in size and shape with the projections 20 so that the projections may extend therethrough in such a manner that a small portion of each projection is upstanding from the face of the cover plate 4.
  • Two tubular bosses 6 are then attached to the upstanding portions of the projections 20 by projection welding, in such a manner that the weld metal seals any gap between the projections 20 and the apertures 21.
  • the finished leaf is illustrated in Figure 3.
  • the leaf 3 may be assembled by first locating the main body portion in the correct position and then securing it in position by welding the terminal end 3c of the second portion to the wall 2a.
  • the cover plate 4 may then be positioned over the projections 20 and the bosses 6 then welded to the projections 20 and surrounding areas of the cover plate. Finally the cover plate 4 is welded along its periphery to the wall 2a. If desired the cover plate 4 can be welded to the wall 2a before securance of the bosses 6.
  • the leaf 3 is secured to wall 2a prior to wall 2a being sealingly connected to walls 2b, 2c to complete the sealed hollow section.
  • bosses 6 may be secured to the main body portion of hinge leaf 3 before the hinge leaf 3 is secured internally to the wall 2a.
  • the cover plate 4 as illustrated in Figure 6 would be used wherein the apertures 21 are in the form of open ended laterally extending slots which enable the cover plate 4 to be slid between the bosses and the external face of wall 2a prior to it being welded in position.
  • connection between the bosses 6 and the cover plate 4 ensures that laterally applied loadings on the hinge are spaced by the cover plate onto the wall 2a to thereby supplement the spread of some of the loadings applied to the main body portion. Accordingly the hinge leaf 3 is able to provide a very stable hinge connection.
  • the hinge leaf construction of the present invention is composed of simple component parts which can be produced in large numbers by mass production techniques.
  • the construction permits these components to be located in their correct positions relative to one another during assembly of the hinge leaf and thereby accommodate the slight variation of sizes of the components resulting from manufacturing tolerances of the component parts.
  • the shape of the main body portion of leaf 3 may be tailored to suit the particular shape of the hollow section 2.
  • the leaf may be provided with any desired number of bosses 6 and the main body portion would be provided with a corresponding number of projections 20.
