Definitions

  • the invention relates to a wristwatch comprising a box enclosing a movement, a crystal, fixing means exposed outside the watch for fixing the crystal to the box and a bracelet, some of the constituent parts of the watch -wristband being covered with a material which is difficult to scratch.
  • the document CH-A-632 886 proposes a series of links each covered by a rectangular plate of hard metal and this in order to form a shielding highly resistant to assault of outside agents.
  • the metal shield made of metal carbide and whose degree of Vickers hardness (HV) is of the order of 1400, resists poorly some very hard agents, for example silica contained in dust or sand.
  • HV Vickers hardness
  • the watch case is made of material whose hardness approaches that of the diamond as that is exposed in the patent US-A-3,931,704.
  • the watch case has a case back and a middle part.
  • This one-piece piece is made of sintered diamond particles.
  • the sintering of the diamond presents for the volume of material considered here great difficulties of realization so much the temperature and the sintering pressure must be high to obtain the desired box.
  • this protection consists in producing these fixing means or this bracelet in part or in whole with a metal carbide which serves as a substrate for a material with which it is covered, said material having a hardness greater than 5000 HV 0.25 .
  • the watch case as it appears in FIG. 1 comprises a case-back 1 and a case-bezel 2 both made of steel.
  • the movement 3 of the watch is fitted from the top into a housing 4 of circular shape of the case back 1. It is held in place in this housing by a projection 5 of the case back 1, on which the thread 6 of the plate of the movement 3.
  • the dial 7 extends beyond the movement 3. It extends into a second housing 8. also of circular shape, of the case-back 1.
  • the case-bezel 2 is fitted around a cylindrical seat 9 of the case-back -carrure 1. It carries the horns 10 for fixing the bracelet. It rests on a flange 11 of the backband 1 and is held in place by four screws 12.
  • the case is sealed with a flat sapphire glass 13.
  • the edges 14 of the glass are bevelled.
  • the glass 13, rectangular, is held in place in a slide 15 formed in projections 16 of the middle part-bezel 2. located above above the horns 10 and extending between them.
  • the other two sides of the box are covered by the glass 14, which, at these locations, extends to the edge of the box.
  • the tightness of the closure of the box is ensured by an annular lining 17 that the glass 13 compresses at the bottom of a groove formed by the internal cylindrical wall 18 of the middle part-bezel 2, the upper face 19 of the base part 1 and a flange 20.
  • the compressed gasket 17 also has the effect of preventing inadvertent sliding of the glass 13 in the slide 15. For this reason, the glass 13 must be put in place in the slide 15 before tightening the screws 12, when closing the box.
  • this protection is provided first by a substrate 23 directly applied to the face 21, substrate made of a metal carbide such as tungsten carbide for example.
  • the metal carbide plate is fixed to the face 21 by gluing or welding. In the case of welding, a temperature exceeding 550 to 600 ° C should be avoided.
  • other fixing methods could be envisaged, for example studs welded against the underside of the plate as described in patent CH-A-632,886.
  • the metal carbide of the wafer 23 is covered with a material 22 which is also here in the form of a wafer and whose hardness is greater than 5000 HV 0.25 .
  • This material is constituted for example of polycrystalline diamond or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride - (CBN), whose hardness is equal to or greater than 8000 HV O, 25.
  • CBN polycrystalline cubic boron nitride -
  • the assembly formed by the substrate 23 and the extra hard material 22 can be obtained commercially from suppliers which manufacture cutting tools and are known, for example, from General Electric Company under the registered trademark "CarboPax".
  • the extra hard layer 22 has a thickness of 0.2 mm or more. This is indeed an added layer afterwards and not a surface treatment.
  • the material 22 has a hardness greater than 8000 HV 0.25 , which gives the watch case properties of scratch-resistance which are still unknown to date.
  • this material is today inexpensive since it is commonly used in the industry where it is used for machining. It therefore avoids having to use a watch case made entirely of diamond, as was mentioned in the preamble to this description.
  • Vickers hardness is defined by the imprint left by the application of a touch of diamond of pyramidal shape on the material whose hardness is to be measured.
  • the following table gives the Vickers hardness (HV 0.25 ) as a function of the length of the diagonal measured in micrometres ( ⁇ m):
  • the means for fixing the crystal to the watch case which are exposed outside the watch are in the form of two slides 15 protected from abrasive agents by two pebbles 22 made of material whose hardness exceeds 5000 HV O , 25 .
  • FIG. 2 Another embodiment of the invention is presented in FIG. 2 where said fixing means consist of a bezel 33 which entirely surrounds the glass 32.
  • This bezel is produced in the same way as the plates which have been mentioned above. , that is to say in a metal carbide substrate covered by a material whose hardness is greater than 5000 HV 0.25 .
  • the attachment of this bezel to the body of the box, made of easily machinable material is made either by gluing or welding or by four studs 34 welded against the underside of the bezel.
  • Figure 3 is a section through part of a watch case made according to a third embodiment of the invention.
  • ice 13 is. fixed to the box body 25 by means of nails 26 which pass through the glass and are appropriately anchored in the body 25.
  • the main body 27 of the nail is made of steel for example, as well as the lower part 28 of its head .
  • the upper part of the head first includes a. metal carbide layer 29 which serves as a substrate for a material 30 are the hardness is greater than 5000 HV o , 25 and which can be polycrystalline diamond.
  • the fixing of the layer 29 on the lower part of the head 28 can be carried out by welding or by gluing.
  • FIG. 4 finally shows a fourth embodiment of the invention applied to the bracelet links with which the watch is fitted.
  • the figure is a cross section through one of its links.
  • This includes a body 37 made of stainless steel, but which could be made of any other machinable material.
  • Hinges 38 ensuring the articulation of the element shown to the neighboring elements are integral with the body 37. When worn, it is the upper face 39 which is exposed to an environment liable to scratch it. As it is practically the only visible face of the element shown, it suffices to protect this face by shielding according to the invention to make it insensitive to the risk of accidental contact with foreign bodies.
  • This shield comprises a substrate 40 made of metal carbide, which is surmounted by a material 41 whose hardness is greater than 5000 HV O. 25 . As in the previous examples, it may be a polycrystalline diamond or a polycrystalline boron nitride.
  • the substrate 40 is fixed to the body 37 by one of the means mentioned above.
  • the extra hard material (diamond) always rests on a metal carbide substrate. This material is necessary because of its hardness and tenacity. Indeed, if the substrate was simply steel or brass, a shock applied to the upper diamond layer could break the latter by localized depression of the substrate. Likewise, if the substrate is hard, it must also be tenacious, that is to say that it is not very inclined to crack at the same time as it prevents the propagation of the cracks which could exist. Both of these properties occur in tungsten carbide (WC).
  • WC tungsten carbide
  • the extra-hard material rests on a substrate made of metal carbide which in turn rests on the part that is to be protected. In some cases, this part could be entirely made of metal carbide. This could be the case for example of the bracelet links which could be made entirely of metal carbide and on which the extra hard diamond shielding would be applied directly.
