Definitions
- the present invention relates to improvements made to connectors, in particular to electrical connectors, provided with a coupling and locking ring, and more particularly to electrical connectors, consisting of two connector elements which can be mechanically coupled together to establish connections between respective members contained in these two connector elements, the two connector elements being provided with a housing and one of these housings supporting a mechanical coupling ring and mechanical locking of said coupling capable of cooperating with the housing of the other element, said ring being composed of an inner ring arranged to effect mechanical coupling or uncoupling with the other element and an outer ring arranged to control the mechanical locking or unlocking of the coupling of the two elements, the two rings being integral with one of the 'other in rotation and the outer ring can slide axially relative to the inner ring.
- the coupling ring is usually free when the two connector elements are not coupled to each other. It is thus entirely possible for this ring to be handled empty; in particular, it is possible to pass the ring into the position it must occupy to mechanically lock the coupling of the two connector elements. In this locking position, locking members such as fingers, balls or the like are brought into a projecting position and, if a coupling between two connector elements is attempted while the ring is in said locking position, both connector elements may be damaged.
- the invention therefore essentially aims to remedy this drawback in order to safeguard the integrity of the connector and, without modifying anything to the various essential functions conventionally provided by the coupling and locking ring (mechanical coupling of the two connector elements, mechanical locking of this coupling, possibly mechanical confirmation of this locking), to add an additional security ensuring the retention of the ring in its uncoupling position when the two connector elements are not coupled to each other, this security in front being able to be erased quickly and automatically during coupling, of course without this resulting in additional cost and complexity of the connector.
- a connector arranged in accordance with the invention is characterized in that there are also provided releasable blocking means associated with the aforesaid ring and arranged so as to be able to occupy two functional positions, namely a first position or position of blocking in which the blocking means fasten the inner and outer rings to each other and prohibit actuation of the single outer ring so as to pass it into the position corresponding to mechanical locking as long as the connector elements are not mechanically accomplished to each other, and a second position, or release position, for which, under the action of control means which are inhibited as long as the two connector elements are not coupled to each other 'other, the locking means release the outer ring and allow it to pass into its locking position of the coupling of the two co elements nnector.
- the locking means comprise a movable radially movable member belonging to one of the inner or outer rings and a housing, belonging to one of the respectively outer or inner rings, with which is able to cooperate with the aforesaid movable member.
- the means for controlling the locking means consist of a part of the housing of the connector element which, in the coupled position of the two elements is engaged in the connector element and is capable of cooperating functionally with a corresponding part. blocking means.
- the radially movable member may include an elastically deformable annular rod between a first position in which it is housed, in an annular groove hollowed out in the inner ring projecting partially out of it and partially engaging in a second groove hollowed out in the outer ring (blocking position of the outer ring) and a position where it is completely erased in the second groove (position in which the outer ring is released ) and the control means comprise at least one radial projection, associated with said rod, engaged on the passage of the aforementioned part of the housing of the connector element when the rod is in its first position (blocking position).
- the aforementioned part of the housing of the connector element is formed by the edge or an area of the front edge of said housing.
- the radial projection associated with the rod is a ball retained in a housing delimited on one side by a cavity dug in the body of the inner ring and on the other side by a cavity dug in the rod.
- the connector further comprises means for confirming the locking of the coupling ring in its locked coupling position
- means for confirming the locking and the ring retaining means according to the invention
- FIGS. 1 to 4 show, schematically and partially, a connector arranged in accordance with the invention seen, in diametrical half-section, respectively in four different functional positions.
- the connector consists of two elements A and B mechanically couplable to each other to provide connections between members (not shown) which they contain respectively.
- the connector element A (on the left in the drawings) is here assumed to be a fixed element arranged to be mounted on a support. Its housing 1, of generally substantially tubular shape, is therefore provided with fixing means (stop collar 2, thread 3, tightening nut 4) for its retention in an orifice 5 of a support 6.
- the housing 1 At the front end of the housing 1 (that is to say the end facing the other element B and through which the mechanical cooperation of the element A with the element B takes place), provision is made on the outer surface of the housing 1, a thread 7 as well as an annular groove 8 (or a plurality of cavities distributed circumferentially) situated behind the thread 7.
- the outer surface of the housing 1, in the vicinity of the front edge, is chamfered to form an annular ramp 9.
- the connector element B (on the right in the drawings) is assumed to be a mobile element (called “connector element on table”), for example fixed to the end of a cable.
- Its housing 10 is also of generally substantially tubular shape and its anterior end (facing the element A) is arranged to engage inside the housing 1 of the element A.
- a coupling and locking ring 11 Around the housing 10 is arranged , and retained by usual means known to those skilled in the art, a coupling and locking ring 11, which itself consists of two concentric rings, an inner ring 12 and an outer ring 13.
- the inner face of the inner ring 12 is provided with a thread 14 and is located at a radial distance from the housing 10 sufficient to allow passage to the front part of the housing 1 of the element A.
- holes 15 In front of the thread 14 are provided holes 15, distributed circumferentially, passing right through the thickness of the inner ring 12; their inner edge (facing the axis of the connector element B) delimits an opening of diameter substantially smaller than that of the rest of the hole.
- Each hole contains a ball 16 whose diameter is substantially greater than the height of the hole 15.
- the inner ring 12 has, on its outer surface , an annular recess of reduced diameter forming a groove 19.
- the outer ring 13 has, on its inner face, an annular recess of increased diameter forming a groove 20 located approximately opposite the groove 19 of the inner ring 12.
- annular ring 21 is housed in the groove 19; this rod is radially elastically deformable and its thickness is greater than the depth of the groove 19 so that, when the two grooves 19 and 20 are opposite, it encloses the groove 19 by partially engaging in the groove 20.
- the groove 20 has a sufficient depth to completely shelter the rod 21 when the latter is expanded.
- the inner face (that is to say facing the axis of the connector element B) of the rod 21 has an annular protuberance 22 connected by two ramps opposite the portions of annular surfaces located on either side 'other, which delimits two annular cavities 23 and 24 in one of which are engaged the balls 18.
- the outer ring 13 In a region located approximately opposite the balls 16 of the inner ring 12, the outer ring 13 (in fact in the example shown it is an inner sleeve secured to the ring 13) has an axial zone 25 surrounding closely (but freely) the external surface of the inner ring 12 and an axial zone 26 of increased diameter, connected by a conical zone 27 forming a ramp.
- the inner ring 12 and the outer ring 13 are integral with one another in rotation (for example by means of grooves 28) but that they can slide axially ment with respect to each other over a certain distance delimited by appropriate axial stops.
- the two connector elements A and B are presented opposite one another, but are not yet coupled.
- the coupling ring 11 is in its waiting state for coupling, the two inner 12 and outer 13 rings facing axially from one another: the zones 26 are facing the balls 16, authorizing the latter to fade; the ring 21 is tightened in the groove 19 of the inner ring 12 and is partially engaged in the groove 20 of the outer ring 13, thus axially securing the two rings 12 and 13 and preventing the ring 13 from being moved backwards (corresponding to the coupling locking position of the ring 11 as will be indicated below).
- FIG. 3 the two connector elements A and B are shown in the fully coupled position (but not locked), the front part of the housing 1 of the element A is pressed as far as possible on the housing 10 of the element B and the annular ramp 9 has pushed the balls 18 radially outwards, which has radially expanded the rod 21.
- the latter is now completely obliterated in the groove 20 of the outer ring 13, which has the effect of axially releasing the outer ring 13 of inner ring 12.
- FIG. 4 shows the two connector elements A and B in the coupled position, with mechanical locking of the coupling and mechanical confirmation of the locking.
- the outer ring 13, released as indicated above, is pulled axially towards the rear of the element B.
- the ring 21 was driven by it and, after radial elastic deformation of the ring when the protuberance 22 passes over the balls 18, it is now the annular area 23 which is in bearing against the balls 18.
- the outer ring 13 can no longer inadvertently return towards the front of the element B, as long as it does not receive an appropriate axial force greater than the deformation force elastic band 21.
