  • This invention consists in a tensioning device for a strung racquet provided with a head having a plurality of string holes through which one or more strings art threaded and drawn tight, said tensioning device comprising an elongate element for location outside the racquet head to extend around a portion thereof, said element having a plurality of apertures in register with respective ones of the string holes within said portion so that the string or strings can be threaded through the element, and selectively operable adjusting means to act between the head and said element to adjust the spacing of said element from the head and thereby alter the tension of at least those strings threaded through the element.
  • the head of the racquet is supported at spaced positions upon opposite arms of a a yok and the element is adapted for location between the arms. It is further preferred that the element is adapted to engage the arms of the yoke to substantially restrain movement of the element to the adjustment direction.
  • this invention consists in a strung racquet comprising a head supported at spaced locations upon opposite arms of a yoke, said head having a plurality of string holes through which one or more strings are threaded and drawn tight, an elongate element positioned outside the racquet head between the arms of said yoke and extending around a portion of the head, said element having a plurality of apertures in register with respective ones of the string holes within said portion through which the string or strings are threaded; and selectively operable adjusting means to act between the head and said element to adjust the spacing of said element from the head and thereby alter the tension of at least those strings threaded through the element.
  • the adjusting means of both aspects of this invention comprises a threaded member which co-operates with a threaded socket to effect the adjustment. It is further preferred that the socket is formed in the element and the threaded member acts against the head of the racquet.

  • a tensioning device 13 is attached to the racquet head 7 between the arms 8 and 9 of yoke 10 and is provided with its own string apertures or holes 14 in register with the string holes 11 of the head 7 (see Fig.2).
  • the device 13 consists of an elongated element in the form of a plate 16, preferebly of aluminium, which extends around a portion of the racquet head.
  • the string or strings of the racquet are threaded through the holes 14 to attach the plate 16 to the racquet head 7.
  • the plate 16 is adapted to engage the arms 8 9 of the yoke by means of lugs 20 which project into respective slots 21 to substantially restrain movement of the plate to an adjustment direction, toward or away from the head 7.
  • Selectively operable adjusting means comprising threaded members in the form of screws 15, which cooperate with threaded sockets formed in the plate 16, beat against the outer periphery of the head. As the screws 15 are advanced through or withdrawn from the plate 16 its spacing from the head 7 is adjusted thereby altering the tension in at least those strings threaded through the plate 16. Loosening or tightening of the stringing 12 can thus be effected readily by the racquet user.
  • the racquet head 7 is of a form comprising an enlarged throat portion 17 having an underside recess 18 into which is located the tensioning device 13A composed of a plate 16A with a single centrally located adjustment screw 15A.
  • the stringing 12 is passed through string holes 14A in the plate 16A and adjustment of tension in the stringing 12 is achieved by turning of the screw 15A whose inner end may be accommodated within a socket 19 within the throat 17.
  • Lugs 20A are project into slots 21 to restrain any twisting of the plate 16A and thus restrain movement to the adjustment direction. It will be apparent that two adjustment screws, or more 15A can be provided, is desired.
  • the screws 15 and 15A may be omitted and one or more threaded studs be fixedly embedded in the head 7, or in the plate 16 with a threaded nut thereon positioned between the plate:16 and the head 7 so that by screwing the nut on its stud the spacing between the plate 16 and the head 7 will be altered.
  • the stud need not be fixedly embedded in the 7 or the plate 16 but may extend beyond and be provided with a lock nut.
  • the adjustment means can comprise a rotatable cam positioned between the plate and the racquet head.
