Definitions
- the present invention essentially relates to an austenitic and non-magnetic stainless alloy having excellent mechanical characteristics.
- Austenitic and non-magnetic stainless steels are already known which include carbon, manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, nitrogen, these elements being contained in the alloy in various proportions, the balance being consisting of iron and various elements in the form of traces.
- the alloy could be modified by increasing the content of certain hardening elements such as molybdenum or nitrogen for example, but these elements did not allow, after hyper-quenching and appropriate heat treatment, to obtain a set of desirable physical characteristics. , and more particularly a modulus of elasticity which is satisfactory in certain applications for the production of parts requiring a high modulus of elasticity.
- the object of the present invention is to remedy the above drawbacks by proposing a new alloy which has a set of high mechanical characteristics, and very particularly a high elastic modulus.
- the subject of the invention is an austenitic and non-magnetic stainless alloy, in particular for the production of very thick parts obtained by gravity molding and / or centrifugation, containing in particular carbon, manganese, silicon, nickel , chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, characterized in that, in order to obtain high mechanical characteristics of this alloy and in particular a modulus of elasticity at ambient temperature greater than 190,000 megapascals (MPa), it has the following chemical composition (% by weight): Carbon .......... 0.025% - 0.15% Manganese .......... 6% - 12% Silicon .......... 0.2% - 2% Nickel .......... 5% 8% Chrome .......... 17% - 20% Molybdenum .......... 0.01% - 0.5% Nitrogen .......... 0.12% - 0.30%, the balance being made up of iron and elements in the form of traces.
- the Applicant has found that, surprisingly, the value of the modulus of elasticity is strongly influenced by the increase in the manganese content in the alloy, in combination with the nitrogen which , taken separately, is not sufficient to achieve high elastic modulus values.
- the manganese content is preferably between 8 and 12% by weight, while the nitrogen content is preferably between 0.20 and 0.30% by weight.
- the alloy according to this invention is further characterized in that it exhibits at ambient temperature a tensile strength greater than or equal to 550 MPa, an elastic limit at 0.2% greater than or equal to 260 MPa, an elongation (5d ) greater than or equal to 35%, a resilience (ISO-V) greater than or equal to 80 joules, a modulus of elasticity at 150 MPa greater than or equal to 190,000 MPa, and a relative magnetic permeability less than or equal to 1.05.
- this alloy at a temperature equal to 343 ° C., has an elastic limit of 0.2% which is greater than or equal to 120 MPa.
- the applicant has produced a number of alloys A to H comprising in particular carbon, manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, according to the proportions expressed as a percentage by weight and given in the table I which follows.
- Alloys A to H were in the form of gravity-molded plates with a thickness of approximately 350 mm, and from which samples were taken from the core (A to H), the mechanical and physical characteristics of which are recorded in the table II which follows.
- alloy A having a higher nitrogen content than that of alloy B, alloy A has higher mechanical properties as well as a modulus of elasticity. than those of alloy B.
- alloys A and C in Table I we see that they have a different manganese content, alloy C comprising about 2% more manganese than alloy A.
- an austenitic and non-magnetic stainless steel alloy in accordance with the invention has limit values elastic at 343 ° C. which are greater than 120 MPa, these values having never been obtained until now with alloys of austenitic stainless and non-magnetic cast steels.
- Table III illustrates elastic limit values at 343 ° C for the alloys B, C, D, and E mentioned above.
- alloys according to this invention and more particularly the alloy G of Table I has excellent resistance to corrosion.
- An austenitic and non-magnetic stainless alloy has therefore been produced according to the invention which has excellent physical and mechanical characteristics, and in particular a high elastic modulus, which can be molded by gravity and by centrifugation to produce pieces of very thick which we find exactly all the physical and mechanical characteristics of the alloy throughout the mass of these molded parts, which is machinable and easily weldable, and which allows the production of any parts which can for example reach 5 or 6 tonnes and include wall thicknesses greater than 400 mm, as is the case, for example, of the superstructure elements of particle accelerators.

Abstract
