Definitions

  • the invention relates to a multiple-effect projectile comprising an actual projectile piercing body at least partially surrounded by an envelope, said body having a longitudinal recess enclosing at least one explosive charge and a rear incendiary charge, said envelope projecting from the 'before in order to produce, at the front of the body, a chamber comprising a delay pyrotechnic charge.
  • a projectile of this kind is described in FR-A- 2 533 309.
  • the body of this projectile has the shape of a bowl, the front end of which has a shape that tapers inwards, an additional penetrating element (primary element penetration) being mounted on the closed bottom of this bowl.
  • This additional element reduces the space available for loads. Since the hollow of the body is formed by deformation of the body, it is obvious that the steel from which the body is made is a deformable steel, which limits the effect of body penetration. In addition, the body has only a limited mass at the front which causes a relatively large deformation of the body during penetration and reduces the penetrating effect and the fragmentation effect. An increase in this mass at the front is practically not possible since this would cause a narrowing of the front opening and would make it difficult to fill the body which must necessarily be carried out by this front opening, since the bottom is closed .
  • the projectile according to US-A-4 625 650 comprises a body surrounded by an envelope and enclosing an explosive charge and a rear incendiary material, this material forming the plug closing the hollow of the body.
  • This body is made of a tungsten alloy and therefore quite expensive.
  • the walls of the body are thin and the mass of the body is, in particular in the front, small which reduces the penetrating effect and the effect of fragmentation.
  • This projectile is also intended only to penetrate through light armor.
  • the main object of the invention is a projectile eliminating the above drawbacks, this projectile ensuring an incendiary and fragmentation effect after penetration, i.e. behind the target, for both light and heavier targets.
  • the body is made of hardened steel and the longitudinal hollow is a borehole which passes through the body on either side, the rear end of this borehole being blocked by a plug, this borehole having at the front of the body a reduced diameter part in order to obtain a considerable local mass.
  • Projectiles comprising a hollow body surrounded by an envelope and containing a charge are also disclosed in the following documents, but these projectiles are normally not multiple-effect projectiles, and their bodies are not made of hardened steel.
  • the body is composed of two hollow parts which are filled only with one and the same charge. A detonation charge lies between the two parties. The body is closed at the front and at the back.
  • the projectile according to DE-B 1 240 760 only includes incendiary charges only.
  • the body is closed at the front or has only a thin channel.
  • the body is composed of two parts, a tube for example of steel surrounded by a lead envelope so that the manufacture of this projectile is very complicated.
  • the body includes a rounded protuberance at the front serving to promote ignition upon impact but not serving to facilitate perforation.
  • this projectile normally only includes a single charge.
  • the load in the chamber in front of the body is the same as the load in the borehole.
  • This projectile also does not include a plug in the drilling of the body.
  • the body is also composed of two parts: an outer tube made of soft material and an inner tube movable in the outer tube and provided with rounded protuberances used to compress, upon impact , the detonator material.
  • the body normally includes only one charge, incendiary or explosive. The protrusions are not at the front end and do not facilitate penetration.
  • said delay pyrotechnic charge has a part located in the above-mentioned chamber, the other part being engaged in the projectile body.
  • Said projectile is substantially constituted by a hollow perforating body 1 preferably made of hardened steel, surrounded by an envelope 2, for example of brass, closed at the rear by means of a closing plumb 3.
  • Said body 1 extends over almost the entire length of the projectile.
  • This body 1 is crossed by a borehole longitudinal 4.
  • this borehole 4 has a portion 5 of larger diameter in order to form a housing for the plug 6, while the other end of said borehole 4 has a portion 7 of reduced diameter in order to 'Obtain that the front mass of the body 1 is as large as possible so as to achieve a considerable penetration element.
  • the latter is provided with a chamfer so as to obtain a pointed element 8.
  • the projectile is completed by a delay pyrotechnic charge 9 and a rear incendiary charge 10 between which an explosive charge 11 is trapped.
  • Said body 1 has a length slightly less than the total length of the envelope 2 in order to form, at the front of said body, a chamber comprising a part of said delay pyrotechnic charge 9, the other part of which is engaged in said body 1.
  • the body Upon impact of the projectile according to the invention, the body 1, by its pointed shape, ensures its penetration into and through the target.
  • the delay pyrotechnic charge 9 is initiated by the heating generated by the crushing of the tip of the envelope 2.
  • the delay thus obtained is sufficient for the ignition of the explosive charge 11 to take place only after the total penetration of the projectile through the target.
  • the detonation of this charge 11 ensures the fragmentation of the body 1 of the projectile behind or in the target.
  • the envelope 2 is only provided on a certain part of the body 1.
  • the envelope 2 is constituted by parts 12 and 13 fixed in any manner on the ends of said body 1.
  • FIG. 3 represents an embodiment according to which the body 1 is provided with a hollow pointed element 8 so as to improve the attachment of said body to inclined targets.
  • FIG. 4 represents a projectile according to the invention of the type provided with a forcing belt 14.
  • the part 12 of said envelope becomes superfluous.
  • FIG. 5 represents a variant in which the explosive charge 11 is also provided in part 7 of the longitudinal bore 4.
