Definitions
- the present invention relates to a railway truck comprising two variable-height headstocks which each carry buffers and means for coupling to other trucks, and are positioned orthogonal to the ends of two longitudinal members delimiting a load floor.
- a low road floor is desirable in order to be able to load the railway truck (this loading being done through the headstocks) in the simplest, fastest, least fatiguing and most economical manner possible, especially in the case of intermodal transport where the costs and times involved in loading (and unloading) the trucks must be the lowest possible.
- trucks exist incorporating special mechanical members which enable the headstock to be moved vertically and retained in the required position. Said members are connected together in a precise and complicated manner and have the serious drawback of losing this connection precision and thus their proper operability as a result of the not infrequent considerable stresses which the headstock, and in particular its buffers, are subjected.
- trucks with low load floors exist which have a low but fixed headstock.
- Such trucks can however only be used coupled to others of the same type as they cannot be coupled to common trucks with a load floor and headstock of normal height.
- special trucks are required to move them.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a railway truck comprising at least two longitudinal members carrying a load floor and having at their ends variable-height headstocks fitted both with an element for their coupling to other trucks and with buffers, which obviates the drawbacks and limitations of known trucks.
- a further object is to provide a railway truck with vertically mobile headstocks which is of easy assembly, strong and of reliable operation with time.
- the movement members are specifically hydropneumatic and pneumatic cylinder-piston units and racks. These latter are fixed to the headstock and cooperate with pinions associated with the load floor.
- the cylinder-piston units are connected to the load floor and to the headstock by hinges which enable them to undergo rotary movement so as to absorb in the best possible manner any occasional blow undergone by the buffers.
- the movement. members are operated by control means positioned on the railway truck itself.
- the locking members are in the form of latches or pins cooperating with holes provided in elements rigid with the outer longitudinal members of the truck and with corresponding holes provided in an end portion of the headstock with projects towards the load floor in a direction parallel to its axis.
- Said end portion comprises a guide collar which is housed with a certain degree of slack in a corridor provided in the elements rigid with the longitudinal members.
- the pins are forced into the corresponding holes and are able to withstand the forces exerted by the headstock deriving from the buffer impacts.
- the headstock also has a central part projecting towards the truck load floor in a direction parallel to its axis. Said central part is housed with a degree of slack in a cavity provided in the load floor. The degree of slack is greater than that present between said guide collar and the corridor which houses it so as to prevent any contact between said central part and the load floor, for example caused by impacts undergone by the headstock buffers.
- FIG. 1 shows one end of a railway truck according to the invention, said end comprising a monobloc headstock 1 carrying a conventional element or hook 2 for coupling the truck under examination to other trucks or to a locomotive, and two likewise conventional buffers 3, 4, said headstock 1 being positioned at one end of two longitudinal members 5, 6 which laterally delimit a load floor 7.
- the headstock is moved orthogonally to the load floor (arrow X) by members which can for example be cylinder-piston units 19 (as in Figures 2, 3, 4, 5) or rack-and-pinion units 20 (as in Figures 6, 7, 8). These members are fixed to the headstock 1 and to the load floor 7.
- the cylinder-piston units are operated by a conventional operating means or hydraulic pump 26 connected to said cylinder-piston units by pipes 27 and located on the truck in any suitable position, the units being controlled during their operation by a descent valve 31 or similar means connected to the cylinder-piston units to slow down the descent movement of the headstock 1.
- rack-and-pinion units 20 each comprise a pinion 28 cooperating with a rack 29 rigid with the headstock 1.
- Said pinion 28 is operated by control means comprising a gear system 30, a member 32 for controlling the movement of the headstock, transmissions and shafts rigid within truck, and a manual operating handwheel 31 on the outside of the truck.
- the locking means 18 and the members 19, 20 for moving the headstock 1 are mutually independent, the former being forced to enter the holes 16, 17 and support the thrusts which act on the headstock following external forces applied to the buffers 3 and 4, whereas the latter move the headstock but are generally not subjected to the action of force.
- sprung or slack mountings can be provided within the operating system itself in order to protect it from any force generated by the headstock undergoing collision or traction during the use of the truck on the railway.
- the truck is therefore ready for conveying to its destination as it can now be coupled to other trucks forming part of different trains, and not necessarily of the depressed floor type.
- the headstock constructed in accordance with the present invention can use standard automatic coupling devices, these being known devices which are not however applicable to currently available variable-height headstocks
