Definitions

  • the invention relates to cartridges for firearms and, more particularly, to cartridges of the type in which the projectile is frangible or can easily rupture.
  • the main object of the present invention is to provide a simpler and improved construction cartridge and used for the same purpose as that indicated in the patent mentioned above.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a cartridge of the type thus described, in which a standard conventional primer bowl is used as a propellant charge.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide a cartridge of the type thus described, in which the projectile can have various configurations.
  • a firearm cartridge comprising: a tubular casing open at the ends; a striker member permanently installed in said housing at an intermediate position of the length thereof and defining in the housing a front compartment and a rear compartment, said striker member comprising a central striker bulge projecting rearward and passages around said striker bulge, said passages communicating said front and rear compartments; a frangible projectile retained in a greenhouse and sealed in said front compartment; a piston located in said rear compartment and comprising a rigid transverse piston wall exposed at the open rear end of said housing and a sleeve projecting forward from said transverse piston wall and slidably engaged with said rear compartment , a primer cup located in said piston and having a deformable transverse wall of primer cup abutting said striker bulge and thus deformable, and a flange protruding rearward in sliding engagement and sealing with said sleeve and abutting said transverse piston wall, and a propellant charge located in said primer bowl
  • the invention also includes a firearm cartridge comprising a tubular casing open at the ends having an intermediate invagination defining in the casing a front compartment and a rear compartment, said invagination defining a central opening communicating said front and rear compartments and forming a rearwardly facing annular shoulder surrounding said opening and said rear compartment, a frangible projectile held tightly in a sealed manner in said front compartment, a striker member located in said rear compartment and comprising an annular skirt skirting said shoulder, a central part, radial arms joining said central part and said skirt, said arms being inclined radially outwards in the forward direction from said central part, so that said central part is situated at the rear of said skirt, passages both formed between said arms, said skirt and said central portion, said passages communicating said opening with said rear compartment, a protrusion protruding rearward from said central portion and serving as a striker, a piston including a rigid transverse piston wall and a sleeve extending forward from said transverse wall and slidingly and sealingly
  • said casing is made of synthetic resin and the front edge of said casing is beveled radially inward and backward to prevent implosion by means of a coupling shoulder in the barrel of the firearm, in which is installed the cartridge.
  • said opening defines a substantially cylindrical rear portion and a front portion which has a forward bevelled surface.
  • said projectile is a hollow gelatin capsule which can rupture on impact and filled with a fluid.
  • said capsule has a shape either spherical or cylindrical with rounded ends with one end which is flattened.
  • said front compartment of said housing widens from rear to front from a smaller diameter to a diameter larger than the outer diameter of said capsule.
  • the cartridge according to the invention comprises a substantially cylindrical housing 10, produced from synthetic resin, injection molded in one piece and defining an invagination 12 midway along the length of the housing 10.
  • the invagination 12 defines with respect to the housing 10 a front housing compartment 14 and a rear housing compartment 16.
  • the projectile 18 consists of a gelatin shell 20, filled with a colored liquid 22
  • the liquid could be replaced by a gas.
  • Shell 20 may have a shape spherical, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, or an elongated cylindrical shape, as shown in 18 ′ in Figure 5, with two rounded ends; or an elongated cylindrical shape, as shown in Figure 6, in 18 ⁇ with a rounded end and the other end being flattened.
  • the front compartment 14 preferably widens slightly towards the front direction from a slightly smaller diameter to a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the projectile 18, 18 ′ or 18 ⁇ . The latter is retained in a greenhouse and in a sealing manner in the front compartment 14.
  • the rear compartment 16 is of cylindrical shape.
  • the external surface of the casing 10 comprises an annular groove 22 adjacent to its rear end for conventional ejection of the cartridge by the ejector of the firearm after the firing of the cartridge.
  • the front edge 24 of the cartridge has an inwardly bevelled edge surface radially rearward, 26.
  • the firearm in which the casing 10 is to be fired comprises a barrel 28 comprising a main section of bore, 30, through which the projectile 18 must be propelled, and a rear enlarged bore section, 32, in which the cartridge 10 must be installed for firing.
  • the junction between the main bore 30 and the rear bore section 32 forms a shoulder 34 against which the front edge of the housing 10 abuts.
  • Said shoulder is oriented radially inward and backward to adjust to the bevelled edge surface 26 at the front of the housing 10. Therefore, the shoulder 34 prevents implosion of the front portion of the housing 10 immediately after firing the cartridge, a phenomenon that occurred when the shoulder 34 was oriented radially.
  • Invagination 12 defines a cylindrical opening 36 opening directly into the rear compartment 16, this opening 36 being elongated by a front opening portion bevelled towards the front, 38.
  • the opening 36, 38 creates communication between the front and rear compartments 14 and 16.
  • the invention 12 defines around the opening 36, 38 an annular shoulder facing rearward, 40, against which abuts the striker 42.
  • the striker 42 is preferably made up of metal and is illustrated in section in FIG. 1, and in elevation in FIG. 3.
  • the striker member 42 comprises an annular skirt 44, which abuts against the shoulder 40.
  • Radial arms equidistant from the angular point of view, 46 connect the skirt 44 integrally to a central part 48. Openings 50 are defined between the arms 46. These are inclined radially inwards and rearwards, so that the central part 48 is maintained in a plane parallel to the skirt 44 and offset rearwardly with respect thereto.
  • a rearwardly rounded central protuberance 52 is formed on the central portion 48 and serves as a striker.
  • a piston member 54 is located in the rear compartment 16.
  • the piston member 54 comprises a rigid transverse piston wall 56 and an integral cylindrical sleeve projecting forward, 58.
  • the transverse wall 56 is completely exposed at the open end of the rear compartment 16.
  • the sleeve 58 slidably engages the inner cylindrical surface of the rear compartment 16.
  • the piston 54 is preferably made of metal.
  • a primer cup 60 is inserted into the piston 54.
  • the primer cup 60 comprises a thin metal casing, of substantially cylindrical shape, defining a deformable transverse wall 62 and a cylindrical rim oriented towards the rear. 64.
  • the transverse wall 62 abuts against the protuberance 52 of the striker member 42.
  • the housing of the primer bowl is filled with a propellant charge 66 which is retained therein by a thin membrane 68, the latter facing the transverse wall 56 of the piston 54.
  • the cylindrical rim 64 of the primer bowl 60 securely engages the interior surface of the sleeve 58 of the piston 54.
  • the primer bowl 60 is located completely in the piston 54.
  • the conventional striker of the firearm is replaced by a cylindrical plunger whose diameter is slightly smaller than that of the rear compartment and intended, following the actuation of the trigger, to enter the rear compartment and to strike against the piston 54.
  • the piston moves at impact forward and, therefore, the protuberance 52 of the striker 42 deforms the thin transverse wall 62 of the primer bowl 60, as shown in FIG. 2, causing the propellant charge to explode 66.
  • the resulting propellant gases must first induce a rearward displacement of the piston 54 and, consequently, reset the firing mechanism of the firearm, so as to clear the cylindrical rim 64 of the primer bowl 60, before the propellant gases can flow around the primer bowl and then through the passages 50 of the striker 42, then at through the central opening 36, 38 of the invagination 12 to possibly increase the pressure at the rear of the projectile 18, 18 ′, 18 ⁇ enough to propel it towards its target but at a force less than that necessary to break the projectile when still in the cartridge or in the barrel of the firearm.
