- first and second check valve element 30, 32 are urged independently by springs 55, 74, respectively, to cause first and second sealing rings 46, 72, respectively, into sealing engagement with respective valve seat surfaces 48, 49.
- inlet pressure P I Upon application of inlet pressure P I , the check valve elements are urged out of sealing engagement. If inlet flow ceases (or if a backflow pressure P B from outlet 16 exceeds the level of inflow pressure P I ), springs 55, 74 urge both check valve elements back into sealing engagement, thereby to prevent potentially contaminating flow from the domestic system back into the utility system. Due to the nature of the separate dual check valves of the invention, should either check valve fail, the other operates independently to check backflow.
- cap 24 In order to inspect or repair or replace the components of valve 10, cap 24 is unthreaded and removed from body 12, drawing spring 55 and first check valve element 30 from within the valve body, and allowing removal of cage 36. Valve seat body 34 and the second check valve element 32 with spring 74 may thereafter be removed as a unit. Any or all of these components, and/or O-rings or seals, may be repaired or replaced with the valve body still in place in the piping, and the dual check valve 10 reassembled for operation.
- valve seat body 34′ may be formed as two discrete elements, including a first valve body element 133 defining first valve seat surface 48′ for first check valve element 30, and a second valve body element 134 defining second valve seat surface 49′ for second check valve 32 and mounting member 62′.
