Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for processing an acoustic information present as an electrical signal of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1 and a device for performing this method.
- a sound improvement of the original acoustic information present as an electrical signal is achieved by generating harmonics from the electrical sound signal, which then * together with the electrical sound ⁇ signal stored and / or fed to an electroacoustic transducer.
- the signal mixture containing the harmonics is mixed into the electrical sound signal at a reduced level.
- the acoustically perceptible improvement in the original acoustic information enriched in this way by additional tones consists, among other things, in a gain in acoustic transparency.
- the sound processing in this known generic method together with the generation of harmonics, provides for a frequency-dependent phase shift of the electrical sound signal, which does not cause a sound improvement but a sound alienation.
- the harmonics are actually generated by limiting the amplitude of the electrical audio signal.
- This signal limitation which is comparable to the overdriving of an amplifier, requires the definition of a threshold above which the amplitude or yellow limit should take place. This results in an amphitheater or level-dependent overtone generation.
- a threshold above which the amplitude or yellow limit should take place.
- With an optimal choice of the limiting threshold fewer harmonic tones are generated for sound signals of low amplitude (correspondingly quiet tones) than for sound signals of large amplitude (correspondingly loud tones). Basically, such a level-dependent overtone generation thus corresponds to the natural laws of tone generation.
- Tone signals whose level is above the limit threshold by a certain amount are, on the other hand, audibly distorted when the processed tone signal is reproduced.
- the acoustic information prepared from such sound signals sounds very hard and is perceived as annoying in the long run, since it is not very natural.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a sound processing method of the type mentioned at the outset which has a level-independent and controllable sound. processing guaranteed and specify a device for performing this method, which is characterized by a particularly simple construction.
- the harmonic generation takes place, as in the known method of the generic type dealt with at the beginning, on the basis of the electrical audio signal of the acoustic information.
- the source for generating the harmonics is, according to the invention, placed in a region of the sound signal that is completely independent of the signal level, namely in the region of the zero crossing of the sound signal.
- the harmonic generation according to the invention takes place independently of the signal level in a signal range which is passed through by all sound signals independently of their frequency and amplitude.
- the essence of the invention which provides the source for the harmonic generation in the turning point region of the tone signal curve, can be implemented in a wide variety of ways. So it is for. It is advantageously provided that the electrical sound signal be broken down in the region of the zero crossing and then put together in such a way that the combining point forms a source for the generation of overtones.
- This realization of harmonic generation is based on the knowledge that any "irregularity" in the synthesis of the signal sections obtained by breaking down the original sound signal is a source for "distortions” and thus the generation of harmonics. Such irregularities in signal synthesis are almost inevitable, unless complex measures are taken to avoid them. For example, every kink in the curve of the sound signal to be reassembled, which results from a simple stringing together of the two signal sections, is already a source for harmonic generation.
- the harmonic generation by reuniting previously separated signal sections of the original sound signal can also take place in a targeted manner.
- Such a change in the signal shape can be achieved, for example, by changing the slope of at least one of the sound signal sections obtained by separating the original signal in the zero-throughput range.
- a further change in the signal shape which is advantageous for the generation of harmonics can be achieved by a temporally offset synthesis of the two audio signal sections.
- the two sound signal sections obtained by decomposition can be reunited offset in the amplitude direction.
- the union of the two tonal signal sections are both offset in time and in the amplitude direction.
- the harmonic generation takes place in that the electrical audio signal is broken down into its positive and negative half-waves, and in that one of the two half-waves prior to reunification into a bipolar signal with reference to its Am ⁇ plitude is changed.
- the change in amplitude of one of the two half-waves already results in a change in the slope in the curve of the reassembled sound signal, which is the reason for a defined generation for harmonics.
- the degree of harmonic generation can thus be controlled in a targeted manner by the amount of the amplitude reduction or increase.
- linear generation of harmonics that can be achieved with the method according to the invention, where linear means that the harmonics are generated independently of the level and frequency, allows any adjustment of the harmonic spectrum to the respective practical requirements.
- the richness of overtones reduced according to the natural laws of music generation for lower signal levels can be simulated by a simple variation of the method according to the invention in that the level of the harmonics obtained from the electrical sound signal is set as a function of the level of this sound signal, that harmonics derived from low-level audio signals are reduced in level and those of high-level audio signals are left constant or raised.
- the further processing of the harmonics obtained with the method according to the invention can be carried out in a wide variety of ways.
- the reunited electrical sound signal is recorded or reproduced together with the harmonics obtained during assembly.
- This single-channel playback / recording method takes full advantage of the sound improvement and is also characterized by a particularly simple feasibility.
- the reunited electrical sound signal is sifted out of the signal mixture with the harmonics, so that ultimately only the harmonics of the electrical sound signal are available for further processing.
- a screening can be achieved, for example, by adding the 180 ° phase-shifted electrical audio signal to the signal mixture of harmonics and synthesized audio signal.
- These harmonics filtered out of the signal mixture can then be recorded or reproduced in any way, for example with admixture with the original electrical audio signal. This is an example of a two-channel further processing or use of harmonics and original sound signal.
- Another example is the advantageously provided admixture of the original sound signal to the mixture of harmonics and a reunited sound signal, consists in the fact that the mixture obtained is recorded and / or reproduced, the admixture of the harmonic / sound signal mixture advantageously being compared to the original sound signal reduced level.
- separate recording and / or reproduction of the original sound signal and the mixture of harmonics and reunited sound signal is provided.
- An advantageous device for carrying out the method according to the invention comprises a harmonic generator with a respective circuit for obtaining the positive and the negative half-wave of the bipolar electrical sound signal, and a device for adjusting the level ratio of positive and negative half-wave and for assembling the half-waves set in this way in the region of the zero crossing.
- the source for the generation of the harmonics in the zero crossing area of the electrical sound signal is thus the different curve shape of the sound signal reunited from the two half waves in the zero crossing area, which is based on the fact that the two half waves are reunited with different levels, which means different slopes which results in half-waves in the region of the zero crossing of the reunited signal.
- a particularly advantageous embodiment of the circuits for obtaining the half-waves of the harmonic generator due to its simplicity provides that each of these circuits comprise at least one rectifier acted upon by the electrical sound signal, the rectifier of one circuit being the reverse of that of the other circuit is poled.
- level setting device in the form of a resistance network which is acted upon by the half-waves of opposite polarity obtained with the aid of the rectifier and at whose output the electrical sound signal reunited from the half-waves is present.
- An overall particularly simple harmonic generator results from the following structure, in which the input of the harmonic generator is connected to the anode of the rectifier for winning the positive half-wave and to the cathode of the rectifier for winning the negative half-wave, and in which the Resistance network comprises a fixed value resistor and an adjustable resistor, one of the resistors being connected to the cathode of the rectifier for obtaining the positive half-wave and the other to the anode of the diode for obtaining the negative half-wave, and wherein the other ends of the resistors are connected to the output of the harmonic generator.
- the sound processing device can be used in a simple manner for further sound manipulations, for example in that between the harmonic generator input and at least one of the A high-pass filter is arranged at the inputs of the half-wave extraction circuits, which can alternatively or additionally also be connected downstream of at least one of the half-wave extraction circuits of the overtone generator.
- a band-pass filter can also be provided.
- FIG. 2 shows a simplified detailed illustration of the harmonic generator from FIG. 1,
- FIG. 3 shows a circuit of the harmonic generator from FIGS. 1 and 2 for setting the level of the harmonics or the mixture of harmonics and the reunited sound signal and
- FIGS. 1 to 3 shows a sound processing device using the harmonic generator from FIGS. 1 to 3.
- the harmonic generator shown as a block diagram in FIG. 1 serves to improve the sound of acoustic information present at the input 3 of the generator in the form of an electrical sound signal which, after passing through the harmonic generator, is present at its output 4 enriched with harmonics , which are obtained in the harmonic generator regardless of the level of the electrical input signal.
- the signal enriched with overtones is provided for recording and / or reproduction via an electroacoustic transducer.
- the harmonic generator comprises four circuit parts, namely a circuit 1 for obtaining the positive half-wave from the bipolar electrical sound signal present at the harmonic generator input 4, a circuit 2 acted upon by the same bipolar input signal for obtaining the negative half-wave from the input signal and one to the Outputs of the two circuits 1 and 2 connected device R for setting the level ratio of positive and negative Half wave and z 'm composition of the half waves set in this way in the region of the zero crossing of the original bipolar signal.
- the harmonics are generated when the two oppositely polar half-waves are combined, which have different gradients due to a change in level with respect to one another in the zero crossing range passage of the bipolar signal.
- This kink therefore results from a distortion of the original electrical sound signal, which is known to be the cause or source for the generation of harmonics. Since this source lies in the zero crossing of the bipolar sound signal, the degree of harmonic generation is completely independent of the amplitude or the level of the original electrical sound signal.
- the harmonic generation by this harmonic generator is absolutely independent of the level, the degree of harmonic generation being exactly adjustable by the degree of change (weakening or amplification) of one of the two half waves, i.e. in the arrangement according to Fig.l the negative half-wave.
- the two circuits 1 and 2 for obtaining the oppositely polar half-waves from the input signal each consist of a diode 5 and 6, of which the diode 5 for the positive half-wave with the anode and the diode 6 for the negative half-wave with the cathode are connected to the harmonic generator input 3.
- the level adjustment device is constructed in a similarly simple manner; it consists of a fixed-value resistor 7, which is connected to the cathode of the diode 5, and an adjustable resistor 8, which is connected to the anode of the diode 6.
- the ends of the two resistors 7 and 8 facing away from the diode are connected to one another and connected to the output 4 of the harmonic generator.
- the harmonic generators shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 are followed by a control amplifier 9, the input 10 of which is connected to the output 4 of the harmonic generator OG.
- the control input of the integrated control amplifier (VCA) 9 is acted upon by the same electrical sound signal as the harmonic generator.
- the control amplifier is set in such a way that the amplitude of the output signal of the harmonic generator, which includes the harmonics and the reassembled bipolar, asymmetrical tone signal, unless this has been removed from the signal mixture by a filter, as a function of original sound signal is regulated.
- This regulation is preferably carried out in such a way that the amplitude of harmonics of low-level original sound signals is reduced and that of high-level sound signals is raised in such a way that a desired distribution of the overtone spectrum is achieved which, for example, corresponds to that of natural sound information.
- FIG. 4 shows a sound processing device using the above-described harmonic generator in the form of a schematic circuit.
- the electrical audio signal to be processed is present at input A of the circuit and can be one of the output signals of a multi-channel tape recorder, for example.
- the further output signals of the tape recorder are fed into further circuits of the type shown for appropriate processing.
- the input signal runs through two mutually independent paths B and C within the circuit, which are brought together in a mixer M before the output of the circuit.
- the input signal is not processed on path B in the sense of sound processing.
- elements not acting on the sound such as a (linear) signal amplifier, can be provided in path B.
- Such elements can also be arranged in path C.
- a high-pass filter HP1 and HP2 is connected upstream and downstream of this.
- the processed signal After passing through the high-pass filter HP2 downstream of the harmonic generator, the processed signal is fed to the mixer M, which is designed such that the sound-unchanged input signal applied via path B is combined in any ratio with the processed signal applied via path C. .
- the sound-processed input signal is fed to the sound-unchanged input signal at a reduced level.
