Definitions
- the present invention relates to a color acceptor element for thermal sublimation printing.
- This recording method is based on the thermally induced transfer of a dye from a color donor layer to a color acceptor layer and is e.g. in "High Quality Image Recording by Sublimation Transfer Recording Material", Electronic Photography Association Documents, 27 (2), 1988 and the literature cited therein.
- a particular advantage of this method is the possibility to fine-tune the color intensity.
- the layer systems currently available do not yet sufficiently meet the requirements for high color density, sufficient image stability and good resolution. It is particularly difficult to achieve high color density and sufficient image stability with minimal lateral diffusion.
- An improved color acceptor layer is described in EP-A-133011.
- This layer is two-phase, the disperse phase made of a polar polymer with a Tg of -100 to 20 ° C and the continuous phase made of a polymer which has a Tg of at least 40 ° C and is immiscible with the polymer of the first phase , consists.
- the disperse phase forms at least 15% of the surface.
- the image sharpness is limited due to the relatively large particle size of the disperse phase. Furthermore, it is difficult to specifically set the desired phase distribution and morphology.
- US Pat. No. 4,615,938 describes a color acceptor sheet with a color acceptor layer which is composed of mutually immiscible polymers and inorganic fillers and has a column structure. Due to the column structure, the mechanical strength of the layer is insufficient.
- JP-A-87-184242 discloses a color acceptor sheet which contains an elastic intermediate layer made of rubber material between the base and the color acceptor layer, which is not used as a color acceptor layer.
- the object of the invention was to provide a color acceptor element for the thermal sublimation printing process which does not have the disadvantages mentioned above.
- the object is achieved by using a special polymer in the color acceptor element.
- the invention therefore relates to a dye acceptor element for the thermal sublimation printing process with a support and a dye acceptor layer, the dye acceptor layer consisting of an uncrosslinked continuous phase and at least one disperse phase, characterized in that the at least one disperse phase consists of a completely or partially crosslinked 1,3 -Diene homo- or copolymer is formed, the solubility parameter is 8 to 12 (cal / cm3) 1/2 , 20 to 90 wt .-% of the sum of the continuous and disperse phase and is immiscible with the continuous phase.
- the polymer of the disperse phase preferably consists of particles with an average particle diameter of 0.05 to 2 ⁇ m, in particular 0.05 to 0.5 ⁇ m.
- the degree of crosslinking (gel fraction) is preferably 5 to 100%, in particular 30 to 100%.
- the polymer of the disperse phase preferably has a Tg ⁇ 60 ° C, preferably ⁇ 30 ° C.
- the polymer of the disperse phase preferably consists of 40 to 100% by weight, in particular 60 to 100% by weight, of a 1,3-diene, e.g. 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene or 1-fluoro-1,3-butadiene, it also being possible to use mixtures of the dienes mentioned.
- a 1,3-diene e.g. 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene or 1-fluoro-1,3-butadiene, it also being possible to use mixtures of the dienes mentioned.
- Vinyl monomers are primarily suitable as comonomers. Suitable vinyl monomers are acrylonitrile, acrylates, methacrylates, malonates, fumarates, vinyl pyridine, styrene and styrene derivatives, preferably styrene derivatives, which are substituted with halogen atoms, nitro groups, nitrile groups, amide or ester groups, such as 4-chlorostyrene, Styrene sulfonic acid, styrene sulfonamides, and styrene sulfonic acid esters.
- esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid examples include n-butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, triethylene glycol monoacrylate, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate, N, N-dimethylaminoethylaminoacrylate, N-methyl .
- Acrylamide and substituted acrylamides, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate and vinyl laurate, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride can also be used.
- Particularly suitable comonomers are acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile.
- the monomers are selected with regard to the values of the Tg and the solubility parameter to be set.
- Tg values and solubility parameters of important homo- and copolymers as well as suitable calculation methods for new copolymer compositions are described in the literature (e.g. in Polymer Handbook 3rd Ed., Brandrup and Immergut, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1989).
- the continuous phase preferably consists of an essentially uncrosslinked polymer with a Tg> 50 ° C. and a solubility parameter of 8 to 14 (cal / cm3) 1/2 .
- Polymers, polycondensates and polyaddition products are suitable.
- Preferred polymers are polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, polyacrylic acid esters, polymethacrylic acid esters and copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile.
- Polyesters, in particular polyesters of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, are also very suitable, Polyamides, and cellulose derivatives, for example cellulose propionate and cellulose acetobutyrate.
- the disperse polymer phase and the continuous polymer phase are at least partially linked to one another via chemical bonds.
- the acceptor layer according to the invention is characterized by a particularly high stability.
- the disperse phase can be linked to the continuous polymer phase, for example, by using particulate graft polymers with a core-shell structure.
- the core of these graft polymers consists of diene homo- or copolymer and the graft shell consists of the above-mentioned substances suitable as a continuous polymer phase.
- Such grafted polydiene particles are known per se.
- the weight ratio of disperse phase to continuous phase is preferably 50:50 to 75:25.
- the color acceptor layer has in particular a thickness of 1 to 50 ⁇ m, preferably 2 to 20 ⁇ m.
- Both paper, in particular also synthetic paper, and also foils based on polyester, polyamide or polycarbonate are suitable as carrier material for the acceptor layer.
- the receiving element can contain further layers known for this use. It may be advantageous to apply an anti-adhesive layer, for example made of polysiloxane, over the acceptor layer.
- an intermediate layer for example made of gelatin, can be applied.
- the material according to the invention is produced by mixing the disperse phase with the continuous phase or grafting with the monomers of the continuous phase and using conventional methods, e.g. by squeegee or pouring onto the carrier.
- the color acceptor element can be combined with the color donor elements common in the field of thermal sublimation printing.
- the color images obtained are characterized by high resolution, high brilliance and good long-term stability.
- Color acceptor layers with a wet thickness of 50 ⁇ m were cast from gelatin-coated polyethylene paper from mixtures of the emulsions A and B mentioned below with the stated weight ratios. The coatings were dried at room temperature, an approx. 5 ⁇ m dry layer thickness being obtained for the acceptor layer.
- An anti-adhesive layer consisting of a 0.5% by weight solution of silicone oil in ethanol was applied in a wet thickness of 20 ⁇ m to the acceptor layers and dried at room temperature. After drying at room temperature, all color acceptor elements were heated at 90 ° C. for 1 min.
- Test images were generated on the receiving elements described above using a Hitachi VY100 video printer using the Hitachi dye cassette (VY-S100A). The color intensity was determined by microdensitometry. The image stability after 3 days at 57 ° C. and 35% relative humidity was assessed optically.
