Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process for descaling a hot-rolled metal product, as well as to a device for implementing this process.
- a descaling technique commonly applied at present consists in using flat jets of water under high pressure, which are projected onto the surface of the rolled product. These jets are usually stationary, and the product to be descaled runs past the spray nozzles. As a result, the jets cover the entire surface of the product, and even more because some areas are covered twice due to the overlap of neighboring nozzles.
- This technique requires high projection pressures, which implies a significant energy consumption. In addition, it results in a high consumption of water.
- a method according to the preamble of claim 1 and a device according to the preamble of claim 6 are known from document US-A-3811305.
- the subject of the present invention is a descaling process which makes it possible to ensure descaling at least equivalent to that which can be carried out by conventional processes, while operating with a significantly lower liquid pressure and water consumption. than these.
- the invention is based on the unexpected observation made recently by the Applicant, according to which it is not necessary to spray pressurized water over the entire surface of the product to ensure correct descaling.
- the coverage factor is less than 100% in the method of the invention, while it is greater than 100%, to an extent sometimes important, in conventional methods.
- the coverage factor is defined here as the ratio between the part of the surface of the product directly affected by the jets of water under pressure and the total surface of the product.
- a process for descaling a hot-rolled metal product in which a liquid agent is sprayed in the form of a plurality of jets parallel to each other on the surface of said product which passes in a first direction, is characterized in that the jets are coherent, and have a diameter of less than 2.5 mm, and in that said plurality of jets are displaced in an alternating scanning movement, in a second direction which is not parallel to said first direction.
- a coherent jet is a solid jet of essentially constant section; in other words, a coherent jet does not contain air bubbles, it is not the seat of any turbulence or any bursting or widening of the liquid vein.
- the coherent jets of liquid advantageously have a diameter of between 0.8 mm and 2 mm.
- said jets are distributed transversely with respect to the product to be descaled, in a direction which is not parallel, and which is preferably perpendicular to the direction of travel of said product.
- the direction of said reciprocating movement of the coherent jets in the plane of the surface to be descaled can in principle be arbitrary, except parallel to the direction of travel of the product.
- This reciprocating movement is however preferably carried out in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the product, in order to limit the number of jets on the one hand and their transverse stroke on the other hand.
- the supply pressure of said jets is less than 75 bar, and it is preferably between 20 bar and 60 bar.
- the invention relates to a device for implementing the descaling process which has just been described.
- the device for descaling a hot-rolled metallic product of the invention comprises a plurality of nozzles directed, parallel to one another, towards the product to be descaled, means for supplying said nozzles with liquid agent under pressure, as well as means for imparting to said nozzles an alternating sweeping movement in a direction which is not parallel to the direction of travel of said product.
- the nozzles have an outlet orifice whose diameter is less than 2.5 mm, and preferably between 0.8 mm and 2 mm.
- the pitch of the sprinklers that is to say the distance which separates them in the direction of their reciprocating movement, and the stroke of the sprinklers during this movement, must be adapted judiciously to each other, so that the end jets reach, at the end of the scanning stroke, the edges of the product to be descaled.
- the pitch of the nozzles is between 15 mm and 80 mm.
- a distance of 15 mm corresponds in practice to the minimum space required to allow the mounting of the sprinklers.
- sprinklers more than 80 mm apart should operate an excessively long sweep to ensure the required coverage of the product.
- the sweeping stroke of the nozzles which results from the amplitude of their reciprocating movement, must be at least equal to the pitch of the nozzles to prevent any residual areas not reached by two neighboring jets remaining on the product.
- FIGs 1 and 2 are schematic representations, without particular scale, in which only the elements required for a good understanding of the invention have been reproduced.
- no means for supplying liquid agent or means for applying the reciprocating movement have been shown, which may be of any known type.
- the direction of movement of the moving parts, such as the band and the nozzles, as well as the direction of circulation of the liquid agent, are indicated by appropriate arrows.
- Figures 3 and 4 are given only as a numerical example, which can in no way limit the scope of the invention.
- Fig. 1 shows a product, in this case a steel strip 1, moving in the direction of the arrow 2.
- Above the steel strip 1 are fixed fixed jet jets 3, distributed over the width of the strip 1 and oblique to the direction of movement thereof.
- the liquid descaling agent in this case water; a not insignificant portion of this surface is moreover struck directly twice by water, due to the overlapping of the nozzles 3.
- FIG. 1 the strips 4 of the surface directly struck by each flat jet, and the hatched zones 5 have been indicated in hatched form. A coverage factor of 1.1 to 1.3 is thus frequently reached according to the current installations.
- these installations operate with water supply pressures of the order of 110 to 150 bar, and specific water flow rates of the order of 20 to 25 liters per square meter of strip surface. Such water flows also cause significant cooling of the products to be descaled, in particular steel strips.
- FIG. 2 A device according to a variant of the invention is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 2, which also relates to the descaling of a steel strip 1, seen here in cross section and moving along arrow 2.
- This device comprises a horizontal feeder 6, arranged transversely above the strip 1 and extending substantially over the entire width of the latter.
- the manifold 6 is provided with vertical tubes 7, directed towards the strip 1 and carrying at their lower end nozzles 8.
- the manifold 6 is supplied with pressurized water by suitable means not shown, symbolized by the arrow 9.
- the assembly constituted by the nurse 6, the pipes 7 and the nozzles 8 is driven by an alternating movement oscillating around a pivot P.
- This movement oriented transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the strip 1, is symbolized by the double arrow 10. It can for example be achieved by means of a rod-crank control.
- the pitch of the nozzles that is to say their distance D in the direction of the width of the strip, is between 15 mm and 80 mm; in the present example, it is preferably 25 mm.
- Their sweep stroke C that is to say the amplitude of the transverse reciprocating movement, is between once and twice the step, namely preferably between 30 mm and 160 mm; in this particular case, it is 37.5 mm.
- Fig. 2 the device is shown in its middle position. In operation, it oscillates alternately towards one then towards the other bank of the strip, to extreme positions or dead centers where its speed is reversed and where the jets of the end nozzles practically reach the respective edges of band 1.
- the nozzles 8 are round concentrated jet nozzles, the outlet of which has a diameter d of between 0.8 mm and 2 mm.
- the jets maintain a substantially constant diameter over their entire length, and their impact surface on the surface of the strip is therefore a circle having the same diameter d.
- the impact surfaces of the water jets describe a trajectory of sinusoidal type on the strip.
- the strip surface directly struck by a jet therefore represents a substantially sinusoidal track, and two adjacent tracks can interpenetrate more or less deeply, depending on the amplitude of the alternating movement of the matching sprinklers.
- the part of the surface of the product directly struck by n jets of diameter d is therefore equal to (nxdxl), l being the length of a sinusoidal track. This part represents only a fraction of the total area; the coverage factor is therefore always less than 100%.
- the layout of two of these sinusoidal tracks 11, 11 ' is shown in FIG. 3.
- the width of the track descaled by a jet of diameter d is between 5 d and 10 d, depending on the diameter of the jet, the impact pressure of the liquid agent, the speed of movement of the jet and the type of scale.
- Figures 4 and 5 show, by way of example, the areas of the surface of a steel strip descaled by two neighboring jets having respectively different diameters.
- the lines 11, 11 'described by the jets of the two nozzles 8, 8' and in solid lines 12, 12 'and 13, 13' have been symbolized in dashed lines the limits of the zones of action of the jets emitted respectively by these jets .
- Crosswise with respect to the direction of movement of the strip 1, these nozzles have a pitch D of 25 mm and a sweep stroke C of 37.5 mm.
- the paths 11, 11 ' are essentially sinusoids.
- the frequency f is preferably between 5 Hz and 50 Hz, in order to maintain sufficiently tight trajectories on the one hand and to limit the mechanical stresses of the mobile assembly on the other hand.
- the sprinklers are supplied with water at a pressure of 70 bar.
