  • This invention relates to bedpans according to the preamble of claim 1 for use by hospital patients or bedridden persons.
  • a traditional bedpan as disclosed in US-A-2 139 273 for use by bedridden patients is comprised of a shallow hard plastic or metal open topped pan having a relatively wide rim on which the patient rests during use. While the rim is generally contoured, or even in some cases padded so as to reduce the patient's discomfort, at best, prior art bedpans are uncomfortable and disagreeable to use.
  • a flexible sheet covering a portion of the open top of a bedpan is disclosed in GB-A-2 136 289.
  • this flexible sheet is not suited for supporting substantially all of the weight of the patient and coupling the weight to said pan through tension in said sheet.
  • the bedpan comprises an inflatable toroidal element surrounding a flexible bowl.
  • the invented bedpan is preferably molded from a hard plastic material, but can be fabricated from metal if desired.
  • the pan portion 10 is relatively shallow and includes a relatively narrow flat lip 11 at the back and in the other areas of the pan which will come into contact with a patient's body.

  • a sheet of flexible plastic or rubberlike material, i.e., an elastomer, 14 is stretched tightly across the top of the pan 10 and is sealed to the lip 11.
  • the sheet 14 extends sufficiently over the open top of the pan so that the majority of a patient's weight can be supported thereby, and relatively little need be supported on the rim 11.
  • comfort is substantially enhanced.
  • the attachment of sheet 14 to lip 11 can be accomplished either by heat sealing or by use of an adhesive. Corner 15, the intersection of sheet 14 with the pan proper should either be sharp in the area covered by the sheet, or if radiused, should be filled with some filler material so that no crevice remains where foreign matter can lodge.
  • Lip 11 in the presently preferred embodiment disclosed herein is shown extending outward from the pan, however, an alternate construction with the lip extending inward is also possible, as also is a lipless construction wherein the sheet 14 is sealed to the pan 10 on the vertical construction, sheet 14 may be a molded piece having a downwardly extending periphery which can be attached to the sidewall of pan 10.

Claims (5)

  1. Bassin hygiénique comprenant :
    une cuvette (10) ouverte en partie haute, rigide, peu profonde, ayant un fond et une paroi latérale de pourtour, des moyens pour supporter les hanches et la partie haute des fesses du patient, fixée à ladite cuvette (10), sur la partie haute ouverte de ladite cuvette, caractérisé par le fait que lesdits moyens comprennent une feuille flexible (14) couvrant une partie de la partie supérieure ouverte de ladite cuvette (10), pratiquement la totalité du poids du patient état supportée par ladite feuille et couplée à ladite cuvette (10), par la tension régnant dans ladite feuille.
  2. Basssin hygiénique selon la revendication 1, dans lequel ladite feuille flexible (14) est fixée à une lèvre (1) sensiblement horizontale, sur ladite paroi latérale de ladite cuvette (10) en sa partie supérieure.
  3. Bassin hygiénique selon la revendication 1 ou 2, dans lequel ladite lèvre (11) s'étend vers l'extérieur de ladite cuvette (10).
  4. Bassin hygiénique selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 3, dans lequel la partie haute de ladite paroi latérale a une zone incurvée vers le bas, se conformant grossièrement à la courbure de la partie postérieure du patient, dans la zone de sa ou de ses hanches.
  5. Bassin hygiénique selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 4, dans lequel ladite feuille (14) est en élastomère.
