Definitions
- the present invention relates to descenders, which are devices generally used for the practice of mountaineering, speleology, climbing, work at height, making it possible in particular to descend along 'a rope by braking on the rope.
- a self-locking device for climbing up along a rope.
- This device comprises a one-piece main body with two main flanges generally parallel to each other and kept apart from one another at a suitable spacing for the sliding of the rope between them, and with a flange of longitudinal connection connecting two longitudinal sides of the two main flanges and forming a groove for the passage of the rope.
- Two ring guide slots are each provided on a respective main flange and positioned in correspondence with one another. They each comprise at least one oblique edge progressively approaching the connecting flange in the direction of the rope entry end up to a blocking end.
- the ring guide slots are dimensioned to receive a portion of the hooking ring which passes through them and which can slide to the locking end in which the ring clamps the rope against the connecting flange.
- the connecting flange is generally straight, and has roughness increasing the friction on the rope. The side flanges remain away from the cord.
- Such a device intended to go up along a rope, ensures effective blocking, but is not suitable for allowing controlled sliding along a rope.
- the blocking force in fact varies too abruptly between an effective blocking and an unlocking producing practically no more braking force.
- the problem proposed by the present invention is to design a new descender structure which has both great simplicity, great safety in use while avoiding any possibility of error, and increased efficiency by ensuring a effective adjustable progressive braking, and ensuring an automatic positive blocking in case of non intervention of the user.
- the descender must therefore be able to lock automatically when the user does not intervene in its positioning and orientation along the rope, the controlled and braked sliding of the descender along the rope being authorized by an operation. user voluntary.
- this positive security must be obtained by a particularly simple descender, comprising no moving parts.
- the self-locking descender allows the relative locking of a hooking ring of the user and at least one strand of rope.
- the descender includes a one-piece main body with:
- the ring guide lights being sized to receive a portion of the hooking ring which passes through them and which can slide to the locking end in which the ring clamps the rope against the longitudinal connecting flange;
- the longitudinal connecting flange has a concave internal transverse profile with converging flanks forming at least one wedge-shaped wedge of rope;
- two opposite transverse connecting flanges each connect two respective transverse sides of the main flanges, forming transverse wedging grooves and constituting the rope entry guide and rope exit guide portions.
- the lights have a generally symmetrical shape in an isosceles triangle, with a central apex in which the hooking ring is housed in the lifeline braking position, and with two opposite locking ends.
- the descender has a symmetry allowing the use either in one or the other direction of progression of the rope.
- the converging flanks of the longitudinal connecting flange may advantageously have respective parallel longitudinal undulations, forcing the rope to follow a slightly sinusoidal path. This improves the braking effect of the jamming of the rope between the converging flanks of the longitudinal connecting flange.
- the use in the descent position is facilitated by providing a longitudinal connecting flange extending at its two ends by two rope retaining spoilers.
- the rope can thus be passed over an opposite spoiler before entering the groove formed between the main flanges, producing a slight pivoting of the descender away from the blocking orientation.
- FIG. 1 illustrates, in perspective, a descender according to a first embodiment of the invention, in the locked position
- FIG. 2 illustrates the descender of Figure 1 in the free sliding position

- FIG. 18 illustrates a third embodiment of a descender according to the invention, in the controlled braking position.
- the descender according to the invention comprises a main body 1 in one piece with which is attached a hooking ring 2, preferably a hooking ring with opening finger of the carabiner type .
- the main body 1 comprises two main flanges 3 and 4, generally parallel to each other, and kept apart from one another at a spacing E suitable for the sliding of a rope 5 between them .
- a longitudinal connecting flange 6 connects the two main flanges 3 and 4 to each other, forming a groove 7 for passage of the rope, better visible in section in FIG. 4.
- the flange of longitudinal link 6 connects two respective longitudinal sides of the main flanges 3 and 4.
- the longitudinal connecting flange 6 has a rectilinear longitudinal profile and a concave transverse profile with converging flanks forming a wedge for wedging the cord, as illustrated in FIG. 4.
- the descender further comprises two opposite transverse connecting flanges 8 and 9, each connecting two respective transverse sides of the main flanges 3 and 4, forming transverse wedging grooves.
- the main body 1 also comprises a rope entry end 10 and a rope outlet end 11, generally opposite to each other in a longitudinal direction or general direction of the rope 5, and shaped to orient the main body 1 along the cord 5 in said longitudinal direction.
- the free ends of the transverse connecting flanges 8 and 9, advantageously cut into a V, constitute portions for guiding the entry and exit of the rope.
- the main body 1 also comprises two respective slots
- Lights 13 and: 14 in correspondence with one another and each formed in one of the main flanges 3 and.
- Lights 13 and: 14 include oblique edges such as the edge 12 progressively approaching the longitudinal connecting flange 6 when approaching the entry end 10 of the cord, as illustrated in the figures.
- the attachment ring 2 In the position of use, the attachment ring 2 passes through the two respective slots 13 and 14, and is crossed by the rope 5.
- the rope 5 is introduced between the main flanges 3 and 4.
- the hooking ring 2 guided by the guide surface formed by the oblique edge 12 just wedge an intermediate portion 17 of the rope 5 between the attachment ring 2 and the longitudinal connecting flange 6 forming a wedge groove.
- Another possible use of the same descender is the braking of a lifeline.
- the descender is then used as illustrated in FIG. 2, the entry and exit strands of the rope 5 being guided by the hands of the user.
- the main body 1 and the hooking ring 2 allow the rope 5 to slide as long as the main body 1 is oriented transversely with respect to the strands of rope, as illustrated in FIG. 2.
- Braking can be obtained by pivoting the main body 1, to reproduce the positioning illustrated in FIG. 1. To facilitate maintenance in the sliding position illustrated in FIG.
- elastic connection means 19 are advantageously provided for connecting an intermediate portion 25 of the longitudinal connection flange 6 to the user's body, thus constituting a balancing member in orientation allowing the use of this descender as a lifeline braking member without having to hold the main body 1 of the descender when sliding.
- Figures 6 to 8 illustrate a variant of the descender according to the invention, in which the descender is suitable for use on two parallel strands of rope 5 and 105.
- the main flanges 3 and 4 are spaced apart sufficiently to allow the housing the two strands 5 and 105 of rope side by side as illustrated in FIG. 6, and the longitudinal connecting flange 6 can advantageously have a transverse profile in double dihedral wedging the two parallel strands 5 and 105 of rope as illustrated in the FIG. 7.
- the entry guide and rope exit guide portions are formed by the two free ends of the transverse flanges 8 and 9, which are advantageously cut in W as shown in FIG. 7.
- the openings 13 and 14 advantageously have a generally symmetrical shape in an isosceles triangle, with a central apex 20 in which is housed the hooking ring 2 in the rope braking position. insurance, as shown in Figure 2.
- the longitudinal connection flange 6 has a triangular longitudinal profile with an inner edge 106 convex and with a central apex 107.
- the converging flanks 108 and 109 of the longitudinal connecting flange 6 have corrugations 110 respective parallel longitudinal ones, as illustrated in FIGS. 13 and 14.
- the longitudinal connecting flange 6 is extended at its two ends by two spoilers 21 and 22 for retaining the rope.
- the descender In FIG. 15, the descender is shown in the free sliding position, in which the hooking ring 2 is housed in the apex 20 of the light 13, the descender being in transverse equilibrium position and exerting no action braking on the rope 5. Maintaining this position requires holding the two strands of the rope 5 in the position shown in FIG. 15.
- the descender switches to the position of FIG. 16.
- a pull 23 exerted on the rope against a pull 24 exerted on the hooking ring 2 causes the blocking of the rope 5 by engagement of the hooking ring 2 in the blocking position.
- This operation can be advantageously used to ensure a first rope.
- the descender is used in the descent position, to produce controlled braking. For this, the lower entry strand of the rope 5 passes first of all behind the spoiler 22 opposite the entry end 10, then the rope runs laterally along the external face of one of the main flanges 3 and enters between the two main flanges 3 and 4 in the cord passage, to pass through the attachment ring 2 and exit upwards.
- the device In the event that the cord 5 escapes the spoiler 22, the device returns to the position illustrated in FIG. 13, and ensures automatic blocking.
- the descender substantially incorporates the elements of the embodiment of FIG. 9, by adding two characteristics: first, the spoilers 22 and 21 are more pronounced, ensuring better guidance of rope 5; and especially the main flanges such as the main flange 3 comprise, at their ends opposite to the longitudinal connecting flange 6, notches 26 and 27 for passing the rope 5.
- the passage of the rope 5 in the notch 26 increases the force of braking, compared to embodiment of FIG. 9, and the more hollow shape of the notch 22 prevents any escape of the rope 5 out of the notch 22.
- This type of descender is automatically blocked if the user releases the rope and the descender. Controlled sliding along the rope requires the user to apply a pivoting force to the main body 1 of the descender, tending to lower the spoiler 22.
- the main body 1 can be made of various materials. Good braking and blocking effects can be obtained with an aluminum alloy main body.
- the descender according to the invention has, by its very shape, an improved blocking power, ensuring in particular a braking by wedging which applies the braking force to the core of the rope, unlike the devices with rough surface which act mainly on the outer sheath of the rope and which may damage it.
