Abstract

The instrument has an annular body (1) defining a bore (2). The hole (3) has two opposite rectilinear sides joined by semicircular arcs, and a groove all round it. The foot of a metallic ball (7) is forced into the hole with its axis (Y-Y') at right angles to that (X-X') of the bore. It carries two flats on opposite sides joined by ribbed semicylindrical portions. The ball is machined completely before the foot is driven into the hole with its ribs penetrating into the groove.

Description

Wind musical instruments, including clarinets and oboes and the like, include a body defining a bore. On the external lateral face of the body are fixed locking balls between which hinges or keys are subsequently mounted.

Until now a metal ball was fixed in the body by a threaded foot which was screwed into a tapped hole made in advance in the body. After the ball had been fixed to the body, it was machined despite the difficulty of access to tools and machines due to the presence of the body. It was not possible to machine the ball before it was fixed, although this would have been easier, because screwing it into a body made of a relatively soft material, in particular wood, plastic or chipboard, did not allow not to be sure that the ball always has the same orientation, the bores made in the balls for the passage of keys and hinges may no longer be aligned.

The invention overcomes this drawback with a musical instrument, in which it is possible to carry out a complete machining of the balls before assembly.

According to the invention, the foot has a non-circular cross section and the hole is delimited by a non-circular conjugate edge.

The cross section includes in particular, for example, a rectilinear part or two opposite rectilinear parts and the hole is delimited by a rectilinear edge or two opposite rectilinear edges, although it is possible to provide any other shape, and even to give the cross section of the foot the shape of two arcs of circles of different radii.

By pushing the foot into its corresponding hole, it is certain that the ball retains the desired orientation due to the flats, corresponding to the straight parts of the cross section, which guide it.

Preferably, the foot has a rib perpendicular to the axis of the ball and the hole has a conjugate groove in the rib. By axis of the ball we mean the axis along which it is pressed into the hole during assembly. We thus control the level of the ball above the body.

The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a wind musical instrument which consists in fixing a keying ball to a body. The method is characterized in that the ball is completely machined before mounting it.

In the accompanying drawing, given solely by way of example, FIG. 1 is a partially sectional view of a half clarinet,

Figure 2 is a bottom view, along arrow II of Figure 1, the foot of the ball.

Figure 3 is a top view of the hole, while the foot of the ball is not engaged.

In the body 1 is formed a hole 3 which, as shown in FIG. 3, has in cross section two opposite rectilinear parts 4, interconnected by two arcs of a circle 5. A groove 6 is formed all around the hole.

In the hole 3 is forced down one foot of a ball 7 of axis Y-Y '. This foot comprises, as can be seen in FIG. 2, two opposite flats 8 interconnected by two cylindrical parts 9 on which ribs 10 are formed.

To manufacture the clarinet, the ball 7 is first completely machined, then the foot 3 is pushed into the hole, so that the flats 8,8 come opposite the straight parts 4 and the ribs 10 penetrate into the groove 6 to keep the ball pressed and thus prevent an involuntary disassembly.
