Definitions
- the technical sector of the present invention is that of cannon projectiles, and more particularly of sub-calibrated kinetic energy practice projectiles of the arrow type.
- the corresponding real projectiles comprise a stabilizing stabilizer with low aerodynamic drag allowing a very large range of approximately 80 to 100 kilometers.
- this range requires having a safety gauge incompatible with the dimensions of European shooting ranges.
- Exercise projectiles are known, lighter than war projectiles, animated with a very high initial speed sometimes greater than the nominal speed of the projectiles they simulate, and provided with a tail unit whose drag is much greater than that of real projectiles.
- Exercise projectiles are also known which consist of at least two parts separated by rupture locations, separable from one another by pyrotechnic delay disintegrators triggered when the projectile is fired. Projectiles of this type are described in patents FR 2,496,867 and FR 2,490,803, for example.
- This projectile has a drawback due to the lack of fidelity of the decay distances, depending on the climatic conditions at the time of the firing.
- the object of the present invention is to remedy the drawbacks recalled above, by proposing an under-calibrated kinetic energy exercise projectile of the arrow type perfectly simulating a real projectile, having the same mass, the same aerodynamic coefficient and a identical useful trajectory over approximately 3000 meters, corresponding to the useful combat distances generally encountered.
- the present invention also aims to respect the limits imposed by the safety gauges of western ranges, by abruptly modifying the aerodynamic characteristics of the device to interrupt its flight after a predetermined duration.
- Another object of the invention is to propose a very reliable and simple to carry out exercise projectile, and not being more expensive for its manufacture than an operational projectile.
- the subject of the invention is a sub-calibrated kinetic energy exercise projectile of the arrow type, consisting of an penetrator and a stabilizer separable from one another during the flight of the projectile, characterized in that the penetrator and the tail unit comprise mechanical means for separating them after a predetermined flight time, by relative rotation of the tail unit relative to the penetrator under the effect of the aerodynamic forces exerted on the tail unit.
- the mechanical means consist of an element, integral with the indenter, screwed onto a threaded part of the tail.
- the element, integral and coaxial with the indenter may consist of an external thread with very fine pitch.
- the exercise projectile comprises a cylinder placed in the rear extension of the thread, to ensure the coaxial guide of the tail before its separation from the indenter.
- the length of the thread and that of the thread pitch are determined as a function of the predetermined flight time of the projectile.
- This exercise projectile has the advantage of being very stable up to the usual combat distances, by reproducing identically the trajectory of the war munitions that it simulates.
- Another advantage lies in the simplicity of operation of the mechanical means for separating the empennage and the penetrator, ensuring very good reliability of the projectile while respecting the limits imposed by the safety templates of the ranges.
- the invention also makes it possible to use most of the elements of the war projectile to produce this exercise projectile, thereby reducing production costs.
- FIG. 1 represents a schematic view in longitudinal section of an exercise projectile according to the invention.
- an arrow calibrated kinetic energy exercise projectile of the arrow type mainly consisting of a penetrator 1, a tail unit 2 located at the rear of the projectile, an intermediate piece 3 ensuring the connection between the indenter 1 and the tail 2, and a separable shoe 4.
- the indenter 1 and the intermediate part 3 are made integral and coaxial by any known means, for example a thread 5 which cannot be removed during the ballistic lifetime of the projectile.
- the intermediate part 3 and the tail unit 2 are made coaxial by means of an adjusted cylinder 7 and secured by means of a connection by very fine pitch thread 6.
- the length of the thread 6 and that of the adjusted cylinder 7 are substantially equivalent.
- the length and the very fine pitch of the thread 6 are determined as a function of the flight time of the projectile of approximately two seconds after the exit from the barrel.
- the operation of the exercise projectile is as follows.
- the cylindrical adjustment 7 guides the tail unit until its final separation from the intermediate part 3.
- the threaded part 6 has a very fine pitch thread of the order of 0.25 to 1 mm over a length about 50 mm.

Abstract
