Definitions

  • Device for switching messages between network sections of a communication network which can work side by side according to the connection-oriented and / or connection-free principle.
  • Communication is established with the aid of a predetermined dialing information.
  • so-called numbering plans are used, as are common worldwide in the classic telephone exchange network.
  • Establishments in the network that find a way through the network for forwarding the message are required for the connection establishment or connection clearing.
  • Network resources must also be reserved for data transfer.
  • the construction of the connection in this case requires a relatively high outlay, while the connection of the actual useful information is connected with only a little outlay.
  • the fixed provision of transmission resources for the entire transmission process can also guarantee a certain quality of service during the entire connection.
  • routers operate without a connection, ie each user message is routed individually and independently of other messages.
  • Each message contains the address Formation of the recipient and the router uses this information to decide where to send the packet.
  • router has two tasks: calculating the route and simply passing the packets through.
  • Networks is the Internet numbering plan with TCP / IP addresses.
  • connectionless traffic guaranteeing the quality of service is much more difficult than in connection-oriented traffic, since the router is usually not aware of how high the load on other parts of the network that are passed by the message and because it is also unknown how many packets will follow if a packet has to be routed.
  • connectionless networks there is no connection establishment or a corresponding process, while - as is the case with connection-oriented networks - the requirements of the quality of service can be negotiated.

  • the invention is therefore based on the object of integrating connection-oriented with connectionless network sections to form a uniform network and for this purpose specifying a suitable system architecture of a switch router which enables such integration.

  • the idea of the present invention is based on combining the principles of switching devices in connectionless and connection-oriented networks in order to combine the advantages of both principles in a uniform network and to largely compensate for their disadvantages.
  • This combination is referred to in the present patent application as a switch router.
  • a switch router SR consists of a connection-oriented switch, for example an ATM switch AS.
  • This Switch AS can be used to connect all subscriber and connection line interfaces which are used in current and future networks and which work according to the connection-oriented principle.

  • the switch AS and the router R are connected via a device IW, the task of which is to adapt the different physical interfaces between the switch and the router to one another, since in many cases the routers connect to other network interfaces other properties (different bit rate, different physical properties) are connected than e.g. ATM switches.
  • the control of the devices AS, R and IW is essential for the invention.
  • This control is carried out by a control unit C. Parts of this control can be outsourced from the control unit and centralized in a network, e.g. in a database D.

  • the entries in these tables are either fixed or are filled by communication with a higher-level controller or updated by communication between the routers, since the paths of packets through the network depend on the state of the network (overload, bandwidth of the passages) Sections, etc.) may depend.
  • there are communication protocols between the routers some of which are standardized and some of which are proprietary.
  • Routing a connectionless message in a device according to the invention can e.g. can be implemented according to the following scheme or functionally accordingly:
  • the router R receives a message. It evaluates the address and tests whether a route is assigned to this address. A route is the direction in which the package should be sent. This is represented by a port and a virtual circuit. b) If this is not yet the case, he turns to the higher-level control system C (or D if this is outsourced). He shares a free one with the control

  • the higher-level controller converts the routing address into a switching address. According to international tionally known standards happen. It communicates the result to the interface adaptation unit IW.
  • the interface adaptation unit IW uses the ATM signaling protocols to establish a connection to the network via the switch AS. In doing so, it uses the switching address obtained.
  • the interface adaptation unit IW thus behaves like an ATM subscriber who wants to establish a connection. After the connection has been set up, the connection established is assigned to the port / virtual circuit combination between IW and R in order to create a connection from the router R to the established ATM connection.
  • connection established also ends in a unit of a switch router SR corresponding to the interface adaptation unit IW or on the ATM connection card of a router.
  • the completion of the connection establishment is notified to the router R on the origin side. The latter can then transmit its message via the established connection and, if necessary, assign the outgoing connection to the address, so that no new ATM connection has to be assigned for the next packet with this address.
  • Time monitoring can be activated for every entry in the routing table and thus for every connection that has been set up ' .
  • the time monitoring is reset, i) If the time monitoring expires, the associated connection is triggered and the entry in the routing table is deleted. This ensures that only as much capa- is proven in the network, as is required for the transmission.
  • the units for interface adaptation IW behave like normal subscribers on the ATM network.
  • the connection of the adaptation units IW to one another can be via different ATM service classes, e.g. Constant Bit Rate, Available Bit Rate, Unspecified Bit Rate.
  • the controller can specify different qualities (e.g. bandwidths) depending on the address.
  • the connections of the interface adaptation units IW to one another can coexist in the switch AS with the connections that are set up via the direct interfaces. This means that the switch routers can also set up normal ATM connections in addition to the packets coming from the routers.
  • a consistency of routing tables in R with port / virtual circuit combinations and with the possibilities of address conversion of the control supports the process and enables the function of a switch router to be better than the functions of the sum of its parts.
