Definitions

  • This invention relates to the field of consumer electronics, and in particular to an electronic device that receives content material, such as a vehicular radio or television receiver.
  • removable faceplates on vehicular radios
  • the radio and faceplate are designed such that the base unit that remains when the faceplate is removed is inoperative.
  • the purpose of the removable faceplate is to prevent theft of the base unit, and associated damage to the vehicle, by minimizing the economic gain that is realizable by the theft. That is, because the resale value of a base unit without a faceplate is minimal, a thief has little incentive to break into the vehicle to steal the base unit.
  • removable faceplates can be also expected to be used to discourage their theft.
  • an audio system paradigm for the receipt and rendering of content material will be presented herein, although it will be recognized that the principles presented herein are substantially independent of the form of the content material.
  • the faceplate merely provides a mechanical function that makes the base-unit more ergonomic.
  • the base unit contains recessed switches, and the faceplate contains corresponding rods that provide protrusions for activating these recessed switches.
  • the faceplate also typically contains other devices, such as the display unit, so as to provide a "blank" panel on the base unit when the faceplate is removed. The lack of a display unit also minimizes the resale value of the base unit, even if a potential buyer is willing to use other means for activating the recessed switches.
  • the faceplate contains all of the signal processing components of the device, while the base unit contains the power supply and speaker amplifiers.
  • the faceplate contains a security element, such as a key or a certification instrument, and the base unit queries the faceplate for the key or certification before it activates the other components of the radio or television.
  • the removable faceplate serves is also unusable when it is detached from the base unit.
  • the user removes the faceplate upon exiting the vehicle, carries the faceplate about, then reattaches the faceplate upon reentering the vehicle. While the faceplate is carried about, its only function is to discourage the theft of the base unit.
  • the removable faceplate contains a rendering system, such as an audio amplifier and headphones, for rendering content material.
  • the removable faceplate may contain a tuner device for receiving broadcast content material.
  • the removable faceplate contains a memory device that can be used to play back recorded content material, or to store-and-forward information or content material to or from the base unit.
  • the faceplate contains a "buy" switch that can be used to create a purchase request for an item that is associated with the received broadcast content material, and the memory device is used to store-and-forward this purchase request to a vendor via a base station.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates an example entertainment system having a base unit and a removable faceplate in accordance with this invention.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates an example block diagram of an entertainment system in accordance with this invention.

  • FIG. 1 illustrates an example entertainment system 100 having a base unit 300 and a removable faceplate 200 in accordance with this invention.

  • the base unit 300 renders content material via speakers 310
  • the faceplate 200 contains controls 210 that control the rendering of the content material.
  • the base unit 300 is typically permanently mounted in a vehicle, whereas the removable faceplate 200 is portable, and is intended to be easily carried by the user when it is detached from the base unit 300.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates an example block diagram of the entertainment system 100 in accordance with this invention.
  • the base unit 300 is configured to be inoperative when the faceplate 200 is detached. This functional relationship between the base unit 300 and the faceplate 200 is illustrated in FIG. 2 (and FIG. 3) by the security device 230 in the faceplate 200, and the controller 330 in the base unit 300.
  • the controller 330 interacts with the security device 230, and enables or disables the other components of the base unit 300 in dependence upon whether an authentic faceplate 200 is attached.
  • the base unit 300 is configured to a unique faceplate 200, thus preventing the use of a counterfeit or substitute faceplate.
  • any of a variety of other techniques such as the use of recessed switches in the base unit discussed above, can be used to substantially preclude the use of the base unit 300 when the faceplate 200 is detached. Because removable faceplates for discouraging theft are common in the art, and the invention is independent of the means used to provide this function, the details are not discussed further herein.
