Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for disseminating parameters in offline chip card terminals, and chip card terminals and user chip cards suitable for this purpose.
- Smart card terminals are increasingly used as identification means for various systems and as portable data storage with data processing capabilities. It is known, among other things, that smart cards can be used as an electronic wallet for payment in various sales outlets. Conceivable applications for smart cards as an electronic wallet include, among others, food retail, department stores, parking space management, public transport, passenger transport (taxi), petrol stations, hotels and restaurants, canteens and canteens, vending machines and drinks, street use fees, ticket sales, access control devices, public telecommunication services, Internet, online services, pay TV, etc. It is also known that chip cards can be used as a pure user identification means, for example in mobile phones (SIM cards) or as an access card.
- SIM cards mobile phones
- chip card terminals which supply the user chip card with power and which can establish a data link with the card, for example to read the identification in the card or to transfer electronic money.
- Such terminals can either be connected to existing systems (e.g. cash register systems) or can be handled as a 'stand alone' device.
- terminals are often connected online to a control center, for example via a private or public telecommunications network. This online connection is also used to transfer electronic monetary units and to update temporary (for at least a certain period of time) terminal parameters, for example to distribute lists of blocked cards in terminals as quickly as possible.
- connection of a terminal to a telecommunications network is often not technically feasible or only with great effort, for example if the terminal has to be installed remotely from any available telephone connection point.
- offline terminals In order to avoid these connection costs, so-called offline terminals have also been developed that can work independently without being connected to a higher-level control center. Typical offline chip card terminals are used, for example, by retailers when the average amounts paid are of the same order of magnitude as the connection costs.
- So-called hybrid terminals are also known, which are only occasionally connected to a telecommunications network (for example, once a day) in order to send all the transactions of the day to the central office at once.
- Each terminal typically uses a set of non-persistent parameters that are not associated with a specific transaction that need to be updated from time to time (for example, several times a week).
- non-persistent parameters include lists of blocked user chip cards (for example invalid, no longer valid or fraudulently used user chip cards) and transaction tariffs.
- these transitory parameters also include the list of the transactions carried out, which must be transferred to the head office, and the content of the electronic money accounts that must be transferred.
- Such parameters are usually updated manually by an employee verifying all terminals and copying the transitory parameters from or to a portable device, which is then connected to the control center.
- a portable chip card terminal In the case of a portable chip card terminal, it can also be brought to a connection point of the center itself, as described in WO9517738.
- this manual update process is complex, especially when many widely scattered terminals have to be inspected.
- the chip card terminals must contain input means (for example a keyboard, an interface to the update device, possibly a display) that are operated by the employee in order to update the parameters.
- input means for example a keyboard, an interface to the update device, possibly a display
- Such input means make the terminal more expensive and require a larger housing.
- ephemeral parameters for example lists of blocked user chip cards, tariffs, etc., are preferably encrypted in user chip cards and / or copied into a secure memory area of the user chip card which is not accessible to the user of the chip card and are transmitted from terminal to terminal via these user chip cards.
- This method is particularly suitable in systems in which the same user chip cards are used both in offline and in online chip card terminals. This is particularly the case in hybrid systems in which not all terminals are connected online, but also for systems with user chip cards that are used for various applications, for example for SIM cards that can also be used as prepaid cards for offline terminals.
- each user chip card primarily contains parameters relating to the other user chip card, for example lists of other blocked user chip cards.
- the cardholder is unable to change the parameters and, by the way, will find hardly any reasons to try to falsify the card and change parameters for other cards.
- Another advantage is that no additional chip cards are required to update the specified transitory parameters in offline terminals. Only the user chip cards that are also used for normal transactions with online and / or offline terminals are required. The process is completely transparent to the user and is not required to take other steps or actions than for normal transactions with the terminals.
- FIG. 1 schematically shows a system with a center, a large number of online chip card terminals and a user chip card according to the invention.
- FIG. 2 schematically shows a system with an offline chip card terminal, a user chip card according to the invention and a blocked user chip card.
- FIG. 1 shows a system with a control center 1, in which parameters for a large number of chip card terminals are stored in a memory area 10.
- the control center 1 can consist, for example, of one or more computers, for example a server of a financial institution or a service provider.
- the parameters in the memory area 10 can include, for example, lists of blocked user chip cards, tariffs, balances of electronic bank accounts, lists of transactions carried out, user profiles, cryptographic keys or certificates, etc.
- a large number of online terminals 3 are connected to the central office and possibly also to one another via a telecommunication system 2.
- the telecommunications network 2 can consist, for example, of a public network (for example an ISDN or mobile network), the Internet, or private connections, for example a private network, for example a LAN (Local Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network) ).
- a public network for example an ISDN or mobile network
- private connections for example a private network, for example a LAN (Local Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network)
- LAN Local Area Network
- WAN Wide Area Network
- portable mobile radio devices 3 can be used, for example mobile radio telephones according to GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) or according to UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), or portable end devices with a connection for a mobile radio part, for example in the form of a PC card.
- Chip card terminals for automated teller machines or for cash register devices, for example, can be used as stationary terminals.
- the system can also include hybrid terminals that are not are permanently connected to the control center 1, but only establish a connection from time to time (for example periodically or as required).
- the chip card terminals 3 comprise a card reader and a terminal computer.
- the card reader into which the user chip card is inserted and which is then contacted electrically has a mechanical function above all.
- a terminal computer is used to control the card reader, to manage the user interface and to establish the connection to the control center 1 and to other devices (for example to a pay machine).
- RFID elements Radio Frequency Identification
- the present invention can be used with components and devices that contain user identification and which can connect to external terminals via a Bluetooth interface, for example to carry out transactions.
- User chip cards 4 can be inserted into the chip card terminals 3 in order to carry out transactions.
- the chip card 4 can consist, for example, of a prepaid card in which electronic monetary units are stored, of a telephone card, for example a SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) or WIM card (WAP Identification Module) or a telephone card for public ones Telephone booths, consist of an access card for protected systems or buildings, etc.
- User chip cards are usually distributed to all authorized users of the terminals; At least certain transactions with the chip card terminal can only be carried out with a valid user chip card.
- a prepaid card 4 the following transactions can be carried out with terminal 3, for example: ⁇ loading the user card with electronic monetary units,
- Chip card 4 (e.g. digital signature)
- the execution of the transactions depends on several transitory parameters in Terminal 3, i.e. parameters that only need to be updated from time to time, for example daily, weekly, monthly or as required.
- the following transient parameters can be provided, for example:
- ⁇ List of blocked user chip cards This list contains the number or identification of cards that are no longer valid, for example because the expiry date has expired, because they have been stolen or misused, etc.
- ⁇ tariffs especially for vending machines in which the user chip card is used as a currency
- ⁇ Cryptographic elements for example electronic keys and / or certificates, user passwords, etc.
- At least certain of these parameters can also be stored in the memory area 10 in the control center 1, as already mentioned.
- At least certain of these parameters are copied into at least certain user chip cards 4 which are connected to the terminal
- a secure memory area 40 for example in the EEPROM, which is used by the user of the chip card
- At least certain parameters are preferably encrypted so that only authorized chip card readers can access these parameters.
- the copied parameters are preferably provided with a date, for example with the date of transmission into the chip card 4 or with the date of manufacture of the new parameters. If the parameters are copied to a file, it is either possible to use the file a single date, or every single parameter. If there is already a parameter set in the user chip card 4, it is possible with a synchronization program to copy only those parameters that need to be updated.
- the date can either be set by Terminal 3 or by a suitable module in the user chip card 4.
- An electronic time stamp is preferably used, with which the authenticity of the date can be checked.
- at least certain parameters can be provided with a validity date and / or with a validity period.
- Time elements with an incremental clock can also be used, which make the use of a more complex real-time clock element unnecessary.
- FIG. 2 shows a system with an offline chip card terminal 5, to which the user chip card 4 is connected in each transaction.
- transient parameters for example the parameters specified above
- these parameters are updated each time a user's chip card 4 is inserted into the terminal 5 for a transaction by the terminal accessing the parameters stored in the memory area 40 mentioned and comparing these parameters with its own. If 40 parameters are stored in the memory area that are more current than the parameters 50 in the terminal 5 or that are not in the terminal 5, a suitable module in the terminal copies the new parameters into the memory area 50, whereby a synchronization module can be provided. to copy only the latest parameters.
- the present invention is particularly suitable for distributing lists of blocked user chip cards 6 in offline terminals. If the control center 1 decides to block a chip card, it can copy the identification of this card into all online terminals 3 through the telecommunication system 2, or at least in all online terminals of the geographic area in which the chip card to be used is used becomes. Card 6 is therefore blocked for use with online terminals 3. If another valid user chip card 4 is inserted into an online terminal 3, the terminal 3 copies the identification of the blocked card in the secured memory area 40.
- a suitable module in the terminal or possibly in the user chip card 4 checks whether the list of blocked cards 50 stored in the terminal needs to be updated. If this is the case, that is to say if the identification of the blocked card 6 is not contained in the list 50, the identification of this blocked chip card 6 is copied into the terminal. The card 6 is therefore blocked for use with this terminal 5.
- the blocked card 6 can also contain a storage area 60 for terminal parameters, and thus can also be used to distribute these parameters when the user tries to use them in different terminals.
- the secured memory area 40 can also be written by the offline terminals.
- offline terminals 5 can also distribute lists of blocked chip cards 6, for example.
- This method can also be used to transfer parameters and files 50 from offline terminals to user center via user chip cards 4 and online terminals 3.
- lists of cards blocked by the offline terminal lists of transactions carried out with terminal 5, or electronic monetary units can be transferred from the offline terminals to the control center 1.
- the balance of the electronic monetary units in the terminals 5 can be compensated and monetary units can be transferred to the control center 1 without the users of the transfer cards 4 being able to access these units.
- Systems are known which comprise thousands of chip card terminals 3, 5 and millions of user chip cards 4. In such systems, the list of blocked cards can be too large to be stored in the limited memory area of a user chip card.
- Variant of the invention stored in a user chip card 4 only the identifications of the chip cards 6 to be blocked, which are used in the same limited geographical area (geographical limitation of the list).
- preferably only the identifications of the recently borrowed cards (for example in the last year) blocked are copied. In this way, only geographically and temporally targeted information is copied into user chip cards.
- different security requirements for claimed services and / or for used terminals are defined.
- at least certain parameters are only copied in terminals and / or only used to block services that require higher security requirements.
- lists of blocked cards are only copied into user chip cards if these cards are used for highly secured services or in highly secured offline terminals.
- Different types of terminals and applications can also be defined, which can be accessed with the same multifunctional user chip cards, but which can be blocked or updated independently of one another.
- the named parameters, which are copied into user chip cards can be linked with terminal and / or application information.
