Definitions
- the invention relates to a method of satinizing a web of paper or paperboard by applying a stroke to the web, passing web through at least three nips of a multi-roll calender, pressurizing the web in the nips with elevated pressure and passing between the nips via guide rolls in which the web, before it passes over a nip in the upstream direction of a guide roller, is moistened on the not adjacent to the guide roller side and moistening the web on one side, which rests in the subsequent nip on a hard, heated roller.
- the invention relates to a calender with at least four rollers and at least three nips and guide rollers between the nips, suitable for the treatment of a line having a dash of paper or cardboard, with means for pressurizing the web in the nips, wherein a moistening in the direction of Web is arranged in front of a guide roller upstream of a nip on the side of the web which is not adjacent to the guide roll, and the moistening device is arranged on the side of the web which bears against a hard, heated roll in the subsequent nip.
- Sheets made of paper or cardboard are printed in many cases. To be printable, the web must have a certain smoothness. However, the requirements for smoothness are different. They depend on the later use. For example, papers used for printing daily newspapers may have a lower smoothness than papers to be used for printing glossy magazines or magazines.
- a standard approach to smoothing a paper or board web is to calender the web in a calender.
- the web is passed through the nips in the calender where it is subjected to elevated pressure and in many cases also to elevated temperature.
- the smoothness a calender can achieve is insufficient.
- the web is painted, i. one applies a line to the surface or the surfaces of the web.
- the stroke is also referred to as a coating color. It forms, so to speak, a surface coating of the web.
- the painted web is then passed through the calender and smoothed. This usually gives a much better result than the satin finish of a uncoated web.
- such a web is moistened when passing through a calender.
- the moisture is applied as close as possible to a nip in order to obtain a moisture gradient, i. when passing through the nip, a layer on the surface should have greater moisture than a layer in the middle of the web.
- WO-A-0175224 discloses a method and a calender for calendering a paper web.
- a web deflection between the individual nips of the calender U-shaped air chambers are provided, through which the web is guided almost without contact.
- a moisture after the first nip in front of a guide roll is provided to give the web the desired moisture.
- the intended after the second nip air chamber is to stabilize the moisture level of the web and prevent drying during the web run through the calender.
- the WO-A-0123666 shows a calender device, which is divided into two individual calender stacks.
- the web is moistened before the first stack and rewetted before the second stack with a moistening device.
- the invention has for its object to further improve the surface properties of coated paper or board webs.
- This object is achieved in a method of the type mentioned by in that a plurality of moistening devices are provided, none of which is located between a guide roller and the following nip.
- the coated web is moistened without the risk that form in the subsequent nips Strichablagerungen on the rollers.
- the moisture is still effective enough to further improve the surface properties of the coated web. It is also believed that due to the streak on the surface of the web, moisture can not penetrate to a significant extent to the center of the web so that, despite the relatively large distance between humidification and pressurization, there is still a moisture gradient in the web receives.
- the web is moistened on one side, which rests in the following nip on a hard, heated roller.
- the largest increase in smoothness in a nip is achieved at the side of the web which bears against the hard and heated roll. If you apply additional moisture here, the smoothness result is improved.
- the web is moistened with steam. Applying steam to a web not only increases the surface moisture but also increases the temperature. It is believed that the subsequent cooling of the bar over a relatively long period of time until it passes through the next nip is a cause that the coating color is not deposited on the rollers.
- the web is wetted for at least 0.1 second before passing through the nip. This is a relatively long time, so that the line on the surface of the web has again dried sufficiently or solidified, so that it no longer gets caught on the roller in the subsequent nips.
- the web is satined online.
- the calendering may then be done in one go with the coating application or even in one go with the papermaking, i. following the paper machine.
- the object is achieved in a calender of the type mentioned above in that several moistening devices are provided, of which there is no between a guide roller and the subsequent nip this.
- this design has the advantage that the moisture is applied to the web relatively early, so that a relatively long time elapses until the moistened web passes through the nip. In this relatively long period, the line has the ability to solidify sufficiently, so that it can no longer deposit on the roller. Nevertheless, the moisture still has a certain effect, which leads to a smoothness increase.
- an improvement of the surface properties is obtained, without having to accept the disadvantages known hitherto.
- the moistening device is arranged on the side of the web, which rests in the subsequent nip on a hard, heated roller.
- the hard and heated roller is mainly responsible for the increase in smoothness at the surface of the web. If you give up moisture here, the smoothness increase is increased, i. one obtains improved surface properties.
- the humidifying device is designed as a steam humidifier.
- the moistening device thus applies the moisture in the form of vapor to the surface of the web.
- the steam not only leads to a moisture increase, but also to an increase in temperature.
- the temperature of the surface decreases until it passes through the subsequent nip, so that possibly this loss of temperature leads to a solidification of the coating on the surface, which prevents subsequent detachment.
- two moistening devices are arranged in front of a first nip upstream of the first nip, each of which acts on one side of the web, wherein the moistening device, which acts on the side of the web adjacent to the guide roller, has a much greater distance from the guide roller as the moistening device acting on the other side of the web.
- a moistening of both surfaces of the web is achieved even before entering the calender.
- a calender 1 has a roll stack with two end rolls 2, 3, which are designed as deflection adjustment rolls, of which only the support shoes 43, 44 are indicated. Between the end rollers 2, 3 are in this case eight intermediate rollers 4-11. The end rolls 2, 3 and the intermediate rolls 5, 7, 8, 10 are formed as "soft” rolls, i. they have an elastic cover 12 on their surface. The intermediate rolls 4, 6, 9, 11 are formed as "hard” rollers whose surface is substantially harder than the surface of the cover 12. The hard rollers 4, 6, 9, 11 are provided with a heater 13, here by a Series of peripheral holes is symbolized. Accordingly, the surface of the hard intermediate rolls 4, 6, 9, 11 can be brought to an elevated temperature. This temperature is in the range of about 60 to about 130 ° C.
- the rollers 2-11 form nips 14-22, through which a web 23 is guided.
- the web 23 is a paper or board web which has been coated, that is to say has a surface coating in the form of a coating color.
- the web 23 therefore comes, as is shown only schematically, from a coater 24.
- the calender 1 is thus arranged on-line with the coater 24.
- the coating device 24 in turn can be arranged on-line with a paper or board machine 25 shown only schematically, so that the calender 1 is also arranged on-line to the paper machine 25.
- the web Before entering the calender 1, the web is guided over an inlet guide roller 26. After going through of the last nip 22, the web 23 is guided over an outlet guide roller 27. Between the nips 14-22, the web 23 is passed over a plurality of guide rollers 28-35, wherein in each case between two nips 14, 15; 15, 16; ... a guide roller 28-35 is arranged. Each guide roller causes a change in direction of the web 23rd
- a moistening device 37 is arranged in front of the nip 16.
- This moistening device 37 is designed as a vapor application device, for example as a steam blower box with a zone-controlled controllable in the width direction of the web 23 steam dispensing device.
- the moistening device 37 thus directs steam onto the surface of the web 23, which rests against the hard roller 6 in the nip 16 following the moistening device 37.
- the moistening device 37 is arranged at a relatively large distance from this nip 16. Namely, it wets the web between the exit of the nip 15 and the nip 15 following guide roller 29 or - in other words - in front of the Nip 16 upstream guide roller 29 and that on the side which does not abut the guide roller 29.
- This is a relatively long time available in which the moisture applied by the moistening device 37 to the web 23 can act on the web.
- the moisture which usually causes the coating to stick to a subsequent roller 6 has then volatilized so far and the coating has become so firm again that the coating does not detach from the surface of the sheet 23 the roller 6 deposits.
- the nip 18 is formed as a change between two soft rolls 7, 8. It serves to allow both sides of the web 23 to abut against a hard roll in a sufficient number of nips. While the underside of the web 23 rests against hard rolls 4, 6 before the changeover tip 18, after passing through the change-over tip 18, the upper side of the web abuts against hard rolls 9, 11.
- a further moistening device 38 is accordingly arranged, which applies moisture to the web 23 before the web 23 wraps around a guide roll 32.
- the moistening device 38 is disposed on the not adjacent to the guide roller 32 side of the web 23 and in front of this guide roller 32, that is so far in front of the subsequent nip 19 that the coating color does not hang on the roller 9.
- Another moistening device 39 is arranged at the outlet of the nip 20 in front of the guide roller 34, which is connected upstream of the nip 21.
- Both moistening devices 38, 39 are likewise designed as vapor application devices.
- the time between the application of the moisture and the passage of the next nip 19, 21 is relatively large in both cases. It is at least 0.1 seconds, just like the humidifier 37. This means, for example, at a speed of the web 23 of 1,800 m / min, that the coated web 23 after the application of moisture until reaching the subsequent nip 16, 19, 21 has to cover at least 3 m.
- each moistening device 40, 41 acts on one side of the web 23.
- the moistening device 41 which acts on the underside of the web 23, can be arranged relatively close in front of the input guide roller 26.
- the only criterion is that the time between the application of moisture to the web 23 and the passage of the first nip 14 is long enough to prevent the stick from being deposited on the roller 4.
- the moistening device 40 which acts on the upper side of the web 23, which later bears against the input guide roller 26, must be arranged at a greater distance from the input guide roller 26. Also in this case, the time between the application of moisture by the moistening device 40 and the contacting of the guide roller 26 is long enough to prevent a coating of coating color on the input guide roller 26.
- the calender 1 is shown only schematically in the figure.
- the roll stack of the rollers 2-11 has an inclination of about 45 ° to the horizontal and the vertical.
- An attachment of the rollers to a stand 42 is shown as little as other additional or attachments, such as scrapers.
- the moistening can also be controlled zone-wise in the transverse direction of the web 23 in order to realize a gloss or smoothness profile control.
