L'invention concerne un procédé et une ligne de fabrication destinés à la fabrication d'ébauches de piston (R) dont les dimensions sont proches des dimensions finales et ne nécessitant qu'un travail minime d'enlèvement de copeaux pour la finition. Selon l'invention, la tige de piston (KS) de l'ébauche (R) est fabriquée par extrusion en arrière et l'ébauche (R) comporte une cannelure (H) produite par formage. A cet effet, on fait intervenir un outil de forgeage particulier agissant sur l'ébauche (R) après création de la tige de piston (KS) de telle manière que la cannelure (H) est formée au plus tard lors du formage de la base de piston. Ainsi, le poids d'un piston fabriqué selon l'invention est considérablement réduit par rapport aux pistons forgés habituels.
