Abstract

Durch die Erfindung werden ein Verfahren und eine für dessen Durchführung geeignete Kokille (10), vorgestellt, durch welche die Wärmeverluste eines Schlackenbads (8) reduziert werden können. Dabei erfolgt das Umschmelzen in einer kurzen, zweiteiligen Gleitkokille (10), deren unterer , den Giessquerschnitt formender Teil (12) wassergekühlt und deren oberer Teil (20) gegen Wärmeabfuhr ganz oder teilweise isoliert ist. Während des regulären Blockaufbaus wird der Metallspiegel (5) durch eine entsprechende Steuerung der Relativbewegung zwischen Kokille (10) und Umschmelzblock (6) immer so im unteren, wassergekühlten Teil (12) der Kokille (10) -- also unterhalb der Trennungslinie (18) zwischen wassergekühltem Teil (12) und isoliertem Teil (20) derselben -- gehalten, dass der Abstand zwischen der Oberfläche des Metallspiegels (5) einerseits sowie der durch die Trennungslinie (18) zwischen gekühltem Teil (12) und isoliertem Teil (20) bestimmten Ebenen andererseits mindestens 5 mm beträgt, höchstens jedoch 100 mm. Das auf dem Metallspiegel (5) schwimmende Schlackenbad (8) befindet sich zumindest zu 75 % seiner Höhe (h) im Bereich jenes isolierten oberen Kokillenteils (20).
