Definitions
- Subject of the invention is a tilting and turning window, especially a roof window. It is at least a bi-functional one, i.e. it can be opened outwards from the room as tilting window, moving about a horizontal axis located in the upper part of the window, or opened as turning window, about a horizontal axis located lower, preferable in the central zone of the window.
- bi-functional tilting and turning roof windows the main parts of which are a window frame and sash, and an intermediate unit between the frame and the sash. These units are interconnected by tilting hinges, the axis of which is located in the upper part of the window, and by turning hinges located lower, usually in the central part of the window.
- the turning hinges of these windows like in mono-functional turning windows, incorporate in one sub-assembly an arched guide and in the second sub-assembly an arched slide.
- the center point of the curvature of the guide and the slide is the theoretical axis of rotation of the hinge, located at the external side of the glazing surface, thanks to which the sash turning about that theoretical axis enters more easily into the connection, providing its tightness.
- the known double-function windows In view of the necessity to equip the upper part of the window, particularly of roof windows, with a drip cap protecting the window from rainfall, the known double-function windows have a limited opening range, usually of about 35°, at which the sash abuts at the drip cap edge.
- windows with a split drip cap the lower pat of which is moving. This enables a wider opening range of the tilting window, but the solution is intricate and hard to keep tight.
- Solution from application WO2005/106174 (A1 ) describe a dual function tilt/turning roof window comprising frame, sash, fitted in frame by intermediate assembly which allow tilting/turning mode of window opening.
- the window comprising tilt pivot at top member of window frame, and a turning pivot in the midsection of sash, positioned close to the glazed surface and not changing its position at some ranges of the opening angles of the sash.
- Solution DE2438437 (A1 ) describe a roof window comprising a frame and a sash frame placed in that frame. Roof window comprising also a tilting hinge joining sash frame and the window frame, which allow opening of window in tilting manner.
- the hinge is equipped with falcate element and its falcate guide and its theoretical axis of rotations is located above the upper member of window frame.
- the essence of the invention is that in a window according to the preamble of claim 1, having as the main assemblies the window frame, the sash and the intermediate assembly between the frame and the sash connected with them by tilting hinges and turning hinges - one subassembly of the tilting assembly has an arched guide and the second subassembly has an arched slide placed in the guide.
- the tilting hinges enable turning the sash about an axis located in the upper part of the window, while the turning hinges permit turning the sash about an axis located lower, usually in the central part of the window.
- the centers of rotation of the guide and of the slide in the tilting hinge are points situated on a theoretical axis of the hinge on the external side of the glazing.
- the window sash when being opened and closed, moves about that theoretical axis and comes more easily into the joint securing its tightness. This permits, when opening or closing the sash, to slide it under the drip cap fitted on the upper part of the window frame, especially in case of roof windows, making it possible to achieve a wider window opening angle without collision with the drip cap.
- the hinges both the tilting and the turning ones, consist of two subassemblies each of which is fixed to the window parts being connected by it, where one hinge subassembly is fixed to the window frame and the second one to the intermediate assembly or one hinge subassembly is fixed to the intermediate assembly and second one to the window sash.
- the window hinges come in pairs, two tilting and two turning ones, in left and right hand versions, on both sides of the window.
- the intermediate assembly arranged between the window frame and the sash consist of two intermediate arms located along both side stringers of the sash frame and the window frame. These arms are provided at their tops with tilting hinges and with turning hinges at their bottom end.
- the window may be provided with springs facilitating tilt opening and keeping the sash in open position. It is advantageous to locate these springs in the window frame. They move the supporting slide along the side stringers. The supporting slide is connected by a moving strut with the intermediate arm, which assist lifting the intermediate arm and with it the sash, when the slide moves along the window frame.
- the window may also be provided with a locking mechanism, which prevents opening sash at the same time in the tilting and turning way.
- a locking mechanism which prevents opening sash at the same time in the tilting and turning way.
- the locking mechanism locks the sash against the intermediate arms when tilt opening is used, and when using turning opening, the locking mechanism blocks the intermediate arms against window frame. That locking protects the window from uncontrolled movement of the sash.
- the locking mechanism may act automatically, blocking the tilting function when using the turning opening function, or adversely when using the opposite function.
- the advantageous blocking feature of this locking mechanism is preventing accidental switching over to the tilting function when turning opening is in course, especially when the mass of the sash is not acting, e.g. at an assembly stage.
- Another locking mechanism may enable switching over of the opening mode, tilting or turning, by manual operation of the user.
- the switch of the opening mode is advantageously located on one side of the window, and the locking mechanism has a mechanical connection safeguarding simultaneous action of locks on both sides of the window.
- a particular mechanism blocking the opening mode is the solution incorporating a pre-selector that is a switch which is to be set when the window is open, changing of the window opening mode after closing it, and acting when it is being opened again.
- a useful mechanism for changing the window opening function is one, which incorporates a checking device safeguarding proper window functioning, enabling switching over of the opening mode only when the assemblies on both sides of the window are ready to that.
- the intermediate mechanism between the window frame and the sash is an intermediate frame.
- the intermediate frame can be either a full frame (second embodiment) consisting of two horizontal members, the bottom and the upper one, and of two stringers slightly shorter than the stringers of the window frame, or a so called half-frame (third embodiement) consisting of a horizontal upper member and of short stringers reaching to the centre of the window.
- the turning hinges connect the intermediate full frame with the window frame, and the tilt hinges connect it with the sash frame.
- the turning hinges connect the half-intermediate frame with the sash
- the tilting hinges connects the window frame with the intermediate half-frame.
- the window may be provided with springs, which assist tilt opening and keep the window open. These springs move the supporting slide along the side stringers of the intermediate frame.
- the supporting slide is connected by a movable strut with the sash frame, assisting raising the frame and together with it the whole sash, as the slide moves along the intermediate frame.
- the window may also have a locking mechanism, which hinders turning opening of the window when it is opened in the tilting way, and inversely tilt opening when turning opening is going on. That mechanism stops the intermediate frame against the window frame when tilt opening is applied, and locks the sash to the intermediate frame when it is turned.
- the turning hinge consists of two sub-assemblies, of which each one is fixed to the window assembly being connected by it.
- One sub-assembly of the hinge is provided with an arched guide, and the second sub-assembly of the/hinge with an arched slide placed on that guide.
- the centers of curvature of the guide and the slide are the theoretical centers of rotation of the hinge, situated at the external side of the window glazing, owing to that, the sash turning about that axis enters more easily into the connection maintaining its tightness.
- the subassemblies of the turning hinge may be fitted with fixing plates adhering to the surface of the window assemblies, to which the hinge sub-assemblies are mounted.
- the turning hinge has advantegeously an additional pin placed in the hinge sub-assembly fitted with an arched slide. That pin connects the arched slide with the plate fixing the hinge sub-assembly to the window assembly, having advantegeously a greater mobility degree then the assembly with which the hinge sub-assembly with a guide is connected.
- the additional pin enables turning of the arched slide about the plate fixing the hinge sub-assembly, which results in further turn movement of the sash when the slide moves to the extermity of the guide.
- An advantageous effect of applying the invention, particularly in roof windows, is enabling opening the sash by an angle greater than in existing windows with a fixed drip cap on the upper window frame beam.
- the favorable effect consists in the simplified construction of that drip cap and its better tightness, durability, and reliability.
- Example 1 (first embodiment).
- the tilting and turning window especially a roof window, has a window frame 1 and a sash 2, and also intermediate arms 3 arranged between the side stringers of the window.
- Each arm is connected with the window frame by means of a tilting hinge, the sub-assemblies of which are the arched guide 4 and the arched slide 5, having concentric sliding surfaces,
- the center of the curvature Su of these curvatures is located on the theoretical axis of rotation of the tilting hinge, at the external side of the window glazing.
- Fig. 1 and 7 are shown the arm and hinges on the left hand side of the window, when looking from the inside of the room.
- the intermediate arm and the hinge of the right hand side of the window are symmetrical to those shown in the drawing.
- the arched guide 4 of the tilting hinge made mostly of plastics, has a cylindrical sliding bottom surface 41, on which moves the cylindrical bottom surface 51 of the arched slide 5.
- the bent operating part 52 of the arched slide 5 has a cylindrical sliding upper surface 53, concentric with the surface 51, while its fixing part 54 has on its end the stop surface 55, perpendicular to the main direction of the intermediate arm 3.
- the upper part 42 of the arched guide has an upper cylindrical sliding surface 43, on which moves the upper cylindrical surface 53 of the operating part of the arched slide.
- the upper part 42 of the arched guide is shorter than the bottom part and is provided with the top surface 44, perpendicular to the main direction of the slide stringer 11 of the window frame 1.
- the stop surface 44 of the arched guide 4 and the stop surface 55 of the arched slide 5 adhere to each other.
- the arched guide 4 of the tilt hinge is fixed by the rivets 45 to the section 12 set in the side stringer 11 of the window frame. It is provided with metallic furniture 46 fixed by the same rivets 45 to the section 12, and the angled part of the furniture 46 in its upper part overlaps the surface of the upper part 42 of the arched guide 4 of the tilting hinge.
- the upper part 42 of the guide 4 together with its wall and the furniture 46 form a tunnel for the operating part of the arched slide, which moves on the bottom sliding surface 41 of the guide 4 of the tilting hinge.
- the arched slide 5 has two parallel plates, the external one 56 and the internal one 57, acting as carrying elements, and between them there is the insert 58 made of plastics with a low coefficient of friction, which is connected with the plates 56, 57 by the rivets 59.
- the central part of the rivets is made with an increased diameter, due too which the compression caused by riveting is carried by the wider part of the rivet and not by the insert.
- the external plate 56 of the arched slide is larger (ending with a greater radius) than the inner plate 57 and the insert 58. In consequence, the external plate 56 protrudes out of the lower cylindrical surface 51 of the slide and mates with the groove in the lower cylindrical sliding surface 41 of the arched guide. Operation of the extending part of the external plate 56 of the slide 5 in conjuction with the groove 47 of the arched guide 4 stabilizes both sub-assemblies of the tilting hinge against each other in horizontal direction.
- the arched slide 5 of the tilting hinge is fixed to the shape 31 of the intermediate arm 3 by four rivets 59 of which three are set in the fixing part 54 and one in the operating part 52 of that slide.
- the rivets fixing the slide 5 in the intermediate arm 3 are longer than the last two rivets placed in the operating part 52 of the arched slide, and connect only the plates 56, 57 and the insert 58; the longer rivets reach the vertical wall of the section 31 of arm 3.
- the bottom surfce of the furniture 46 mates with the fixing plate 33 fixed to the section 31 (shown in Fig. 3 as transparent) of the intermediate arm.
- the fixing plate 33 reaches in each position of the tilting hinge behind the bottom surface of the furniture 46, preventing uncontrolled movements of the sash, which could not be kept in place by short upper part 42 of the arched guide of the tilting hinge.
- the shape 12 set in the side stringer 11 of the window frame 1, in which is fixed the guide 4 of the tilting hinge constitutes also the guide for the mechanism assisting the raising of the intermediate arms 3 and the sash 2 when tilting it, and keeping it in open position.
- the assisting mechanism consists of the supporting slide 61 moving within the shape 12 along the side stringer 11 of the window frame, and of the moving strut 62, which connects the supporting slide to the intermediate arm 3.
- the supporting slide is driven by the set of springs 63 located in the side stringer 11 of the window frame 1. These springs push the supporting slide 61 to the central zone of the window frame.
- the strut 62 lifts then the sash.
- both intermediate arms 3 are connected with the window frame 2 by the turning hinges 7, of which each one is provided with an arched guide 71 fixed to the intermediate arm 3 and an arched slide 72 fixed to the window frame 2.
- the turning hinge is located in the central zone of the window, advangeously slightly above the middle of the sash 2 lenght.
- the sub-assembly of the turning hinge with the arched slide 72 has a fixing plate 73, by which it is fixed to the sash frame 2. That arched slide 72 is connected with the fixing plate 73 by means of the pin 74, enabling additional turning of the fixing plate 73, and together with it of the roof window sash 2 when the arched slide 72 is moved to the end of the arched guide 71.
- Fig. 8 shows the sash 2 and the turning hinge in the end position between the movement range achieved by sliding the arched slide 72 in the arched guide 71, and the additional rotation about the pin 74 of that hinge.
- the window parts drawn by fine lines, i.e. The sash 2 and the fixing plate 73 of the turning hinge, are considered transparent, because they are actually located above the plane of the section.
- the movement of the sash 2 from the position shown in the drawing towards the closed window position (arrow "Z" in Fig. 8 ) is effected by sliding in the arched slide 72 into the guide 71. this couses the sash 2 to rotate about the center of curvature So of the sliding surfaces of the guide and the slide, coinciding with the theoretical axis of rotation of the turning hinge.
- the limiter 75 In that movement phase, the limiter 75, firmly connected with the fixing plate 73 of the turning hinge, moves along the external curvature of the guide, adhering to it by its longer surface.
- the movement of the sash 2 from the position shown in the drawing to open it further (arrow “O" in Fig. 7 ) is effected by turning it about the pin 74 of the turning hinge.
- the limiter 75 turns together with fixing plate 73 and the sash 2, by passing by its shorter arched surface 76 the arched guide 71 of the turning hinge.
- the window is fitted with a locking mechanism, which locks the sash to the intermediate arms when it is opened in the tilting way, and locks the intermediate arms to the window frame when the window is turned, protecting it against being turned and tilted at the same time.
- Blocking the tilt opening mode and enabling by the same turn opening of the window results from catching the pin 81 in the intermediate arm 3 on the catch 82, which is located in the central zone of the side stringer 11 of the window frame ( Fig. 1 ).
- Blocking the turn opening mode and by the same enabling tilt opening of the window is caused by catching the set of two pins 83 in the arm 3 on the double catch 84 located in the upper part of the sash frame 2 ( Fig. 7 ).
- That mechanism is located under the cover 34 in the intermediate arm 3 of the roof window. It incorporates an additional safety device against accidental resetting, particularly during erection work, when the intermediate arms are not loaded by the mass of the sash, and their uncontrolled movement could hit a person standing sithin the range of the intermediate arms.
- the sash is locked directly to the window frame in two places, taht is by the window handle fixed at the bottom cross-piece of the sash frame, mating with the bottom cross-piece of the window frame, and by the upper catch fixed on the upper cross-piece of the sash frame, mating with the upper cross-piece of the window frame.
- both the window handle and the upper catch are to be unlocked, upon what the upper part of the sash is being pulled down. This causes the slides 72 to slip out from the guides 71 of the turning hinges, the RH and LH ones, and turning the sash about the centers of curvature So of the sliding surfaces of these hinges.
- Example 2 (first embodiment).
- the tilting and turning window especially a roof window one, has a window frame and a sash, and also intermediate arms located between the side stringers. These arms are connected with the window frame by means of tilt hinges, the sub-assemblies of which are the arched guide and the arched slide, as in the first example of execution.
- the window is also provided with a set of springs assisting window opening in the tilt function and keeping the sash in open position.
- the intermediate arms are connected with the sash by means of turning hinges, incorporating the subassemblies of the arched guide and the arched slide, as also an additional pin, like in the first example of execution.
- the locking mechanism which impedes concurrent sash opening in both modes, when opening it in the tilting or inversely in the turning way, is different. That mechanism contains a pre-selector that is a function switching over device to be actuated, when the window is open, which causesthe switching-over to come into effect only after closing the window, and upon opening it again.
- the pre-selector is located and the right hand or the left hand side of the window (the active side), whereas the control mechanism is placed at the opposite (passive) side of the window, allowing switching-over of the window opening mode only when the intermediate arms on both sides and the sash are in closed window position. If safeguards correct functioning of the locking mechanism, allowing function switching-over only when the window assemblies are ready for it.
- the sash is locked directly to the window frame only at the bottom, by the window handle set on the bottom cross-piece of the sash frame, the locks of which mate with the bottom cross-piece of the window frame.
- the handle is to be unlocked and the bottom part of the sash pushed outwards.
- the tilting and turning window especially a roof window one, has a window frame and sash, and also an intermediate frame, being a full frame consisting of two cross-pieces, the upper and the bottom one, and of two side stringers, which are slightly shorter than the window frame stringers, so as to fit in them,
- the intermediate frame is connected with the window frame by means of turning hinges consisting of two sub-assemblies, the arched guide and the arched slide, and of an addition pin. Connection of the intermediate frame with the sash is made by tilting hinges having two sub-assemblies, the arched guide and the arched slide, of the same construction as described in the first example of execution.
- the intermediate frame incorporates moreover a set of springs, which assist sash lifting in the tilting mode and keeping it in the open position.
- the window in the third example of execution has separate handles locking the sash to the intermediate frame, and ones locking that frame to the window frame. It incorporates also a locking mechanism, which prevents simultaneous window opening in both modes. That mechanism is situated in the intermediate frame and is controlled by a switch, which is to be switched over when the window is closed in both modes.
- the tilting and turning window especially a roof window one, has a window frame and a sash, and also an intermediate frame, being a half-frame consisting of two side stringers reaching slightly beyond the middle of the lenght of the window, and of only one cross-piece, located at the top.
- the intermediate frame is connected with the window frame by tilting hinges, consisting of the sub-assemblies, the arched guide and the arched slide, as in the case of the two first examples of the invention.
- the window incorporates also a set of springs assisting tilt opening of the sash and keeping it in open position.
- the intermediate arms are connected with the sash by means of turning hinges, consisting of the sub-assemblies of the arched guide and the arched slide, and of an additional pin, like in the first two examples of execution of the invention.
- the window is also provided with a locking mechanism, which prevents concrrent opening in both modes, i. e. in the turning mode when it is being tilt opened, and viceversa in the oppsite mode.
- the locking mechanism is of the type incorporating a pre-selector or a function selector, which has to be switched over when the window is in closed position.
- the stiffness of the half-frame is low, the locking mechanism is as described above in the second example of execution.
