  • the thickness of the plastics material i.e. that forming the walls 2, 3, 4, 5 and the top portion 6, is constant throughout the block 1, although it may be varied for strength purposes in specific regions. Also, lines of weakness can be introduced to provide frangible portions, for example, in the side and/or end walls.

  • a first layer of modular blocks 1, 1' is laid, for example, directly onto the floor of an exhibition centre.
  • Second and subsequent layers may be constructed, for example, the structure 1000 may be built in the staggered manner as shown in Figure 13 .
  • the blocks 1, 1' can be stacked in this staggered manner due to the adjacent formations 10a, 10b; 10a', 10b' being separated by channels 8. Furthermore, upper and/or lower blocks 1, 1' can be rotated by 90° and stacked due to formations 10, 10b; 10a', 10b' having sides 101a, 102a, 103a, 101b, 102b, 103b; 101a', 102a', 103a', 101b', 102b', 103b' of equal length.
  • the perimeter of the base of an upper block 1, 1' forms a friction fit with the perimetral channel 9, 9' of a lower block 1, 1', obviating the need for mortar or other jointing compounds.
  • edges 101a, 102a, 103a; 101b, 102b, 103b; 101a', 102a', 103a'; 101b', 102b', 103b' of the formations 10a, 10b; 10a', 10b' are chamfered to form a guide for the pressing action, thus distributing the force evenly around the circumference of the block 1, 1'.
  • the apertures 12, 12' of above and below blocks 1, 1' are aligned.
  • Stabilising rods for example plastics or metal rods, are fed from the top of the structure through the aligned holes to provide further stability.
  • cables and/or pipes for example electricity wires and/or fluid pipes may be passed through the aligned apertures 12, 12', for example to hide them from sight or retain them for safety purposes.
  • the cables and/or piping also provide further stability to the structure.
  • securing means for example ties, are passed through adjacent apertures in order to further strengthen the structure.
  • the lip 12a, 12a' helps to prevent the stabilising rods, ties and/or pipes and/or securing means from damaging the aligned apertures 12, 12'.
  • the lip 12a, 12' may be provided with a seal, for example a rubber washer, for example, to prevent or substantially reduce ingress of condensation.
  • the blocks 1, 1' are secured to a base or foundation, for example a pair of rails, to provide stability at the base of the structure.
  • connecting means such as one of hook and eye fixing means, e.g. Velcro ® , or other means such as clips, adhesive, magnets and so on.
  • rivets or other such means are provided to connect adjacent blocks 1' at apertures 13', thereby providing further stability.
  • one of an upper or lower block 1, 1' is firmly held while simultaneously applying a force to the other block 1, 1' in a direction which forces the two blocks 1, 1' apart.
  • the recess 11, 11' enables the two blocks 1, 1' to free easily, for example, by preventing a vacuum from forming.
  • lighting means is housed within one or more blocks 1, 1' of a structure.
  • Fascia portions 100 are attached to one side of the structure, for example, by securing to one side of the blocks 1, 1' in a wall.
  • Indicia and/or pictographic representations are provided on the inner surface of the fascia portions 100 which, in use, can be viewed through the other side wall of the block 1, 1'. This embodiment is particularly advantageous during darkness because the lighting means illuminate the inner block 1, 1'.
  • a multiple plug socket is located within a block 1, 1', which block 1, 1' forms part of a temporary wall in an exhibition centre.
  • the electricity supply cables are contained within the structure by passing them between blocks 1, 1' via adjacent apertures 12, 12'. In use, electrical appliances are plugged into the socket in the wall.
  • the blocks 1, 1' are provided with sealant, for example a rubber seal, to prevent or substantially reduce ingress of water, for example rain water or condensation.
  • sealant for example a rubber seal
  • the fascia portions 100, 105 may be affixed to the block 1, 1' by other means such as one of hook and eye fixing means, e.g. Velcro ® , or other means such as clips, adhesive, magnets and so on. Fixing the fascia portions 100, 105 by using an alternative means may preclude the requirement of having apertures 13' in the side walls 2', 3', 4', 5'.
  • the fascia portions 100, 105 and coping top 110 can easily be removed from a block 1, 1' by leverage, for example, by inserting a finger nail into recess 120 and applying force.
  • the fascia portions 100, 105 are manufactured as a single strip of material with a plurality of lines of weakness (not shown) to provide frangible portions.
  • the strip is fractured at a desired location about a line of weakness to provide a long 100 or short 105 or other sized fascia portion, depending on that required.
  • the fascia portions 100, 105 are designed such that they can be secured to one or more blocks 1, 1' after the blocks have been assembled to form a structure.
  • a structure 1000 such as that shown in Figure 13 may be erected.
  • one or more blocks 1, 1' may be selected to house a utility and/or lighting means.
  • the fascia portions 100, 105 can be secured to the blocks 1, 1'. This method of installation offers greater versatility over known arrangements.
  • FIG. 14 there is shown a further embodiment of a block according to the present invention, wherein parts of the block similar to those of the first and second embodiments are given the same number but are denoted with a prime (").
  • the hollow block 1" is similar to the block 1 of the first embodiment in that it comprises four upstanding side wall portions 2", 3", 4", 5" and a top portion 6" having raised formations 10a", 10b" formed thereon.
  • the formations 10a", 10b" have respective apertures 12" extending therethrough.
  • the block 1" additionally comprises apertures 20" located in the recess 11" of the top portion 6".
  • the aperture 20" have a smaller diameter than apertures 12" and are principally used such that fixing means can be passed therethrough in order to secure the block 1" to a substrate, e.g. a wooden foundation on which a structure is erected. Therefore, typically only the first layer of a structure comprises the blocks 1" having these additional apertures 20". Other layers of the structure need only comprise blocks 1, 1'.
  • the blocks 1, 1' may be formed into other suitable shapes or sizes.
  • the formations which allow adjacent blocks 1, 1', 1" to engage may be located within or formed on different areas of the block 1, 1', 1" to allow, for example, structures to be built using alternative methods, for example, other known brickwork patterns that are not shown in Figure 13 .
  • the fascia 100, 105 may be adhered to the block sides if required. As such, one or both of the block 1, 1', 1" and fascia 100, 105 may have an adhesive layer applied to at least a part thereof, preferably covered with a release liner.
  • fascia portions 100, 105 and/or coping top 110 may be provided in other shapes, colours and sizes without departing from the scope of the present invention.
