Definitions
- the invention relates to a telescopic drainpipe assembly for leading waste water from a height adjustable sink to a sewage system.
- Height adjustable sinks are used on hospitals, in connections with disabled in wheel chairs and in some kindergartens, common for the users is, that it is difficult for them to use a common sink such as a bathroom sink because of the height. By adjusting the sink height the ease of access to the sink is then improved.
- a traditionally drainpipe assembly for a height adjustable sink uses a long flexible pipe connected to the drain trap in one end and in the other end to the sewage removal system via the sewage drain system.
- the water running through the drain in the sink will then first pass a drain trap and then the long flexible pipe and through to the sewage drain system.
- the height adjustable sink is at its highest, the long flexible pipe will be almost stretched and the water will normally drain from the sink with no problem.
- the object can be achieved by means of a telescopic drainpipe assembly for leading waste water from a height adjustable sink to a sewage system
- the assembly comprises, a telescopic system comprising, an upper member connected via a drain trap to the height adjustable sink, and a lower member connected to the sewage system, wherein the upper member is adapted by a smaller cross section to be partly accommodated in the lower member and hereby forming an overlapping section of the telescopic system, wherein the upper member and the lower member is adapted to move in relation to each other as the height of the height adjustable sink is changed, and a flexible member adapted to cover the overlapping section of the telescopic system and attached to the upper member and attached to the lower member.
- sewage system there is meant any pipe system, for example in the wall or floor of a building, connected to the sewage removal system.
- the flexible member comprises a section that has concertina form. Using this form, wear in the material can be avoided as it will not be stretched.
- the flexible member is attached to the upper member in a fluid tight manner and/or the flexible member is attached to the lower member in a fluid tight manner. This ensures that the unpleasant odors from the sewage cannot exit telescopic drainpipe assembly as the telescopic system will be enclosed in a fluid tight compartment.
- the upper member has a tubular body and/or the lower member has a tubular body. Tubular members are easy to connect to the remaining drainage system of the height adjustable sink.
- the upper member has a smaller diameter than the lower member. This means that the upper member will be fitted inside the lower member which ensures that when waste water runs through the telescopic drainpipe assembly it will not get in contact with the flexible member due to gravity.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly further comprises a fitting on the upper member for the attachment of the telescopic drainpipe assembly to the height adjustable sink.
- the fitting is positioned so that the force applied by the height adjustable sink is substantially in the axial direction of the upper member. This ensures that the telescopic member is pushed or pulled almost exclusively in the axial direction which provides a long life for the telescopic drainpipe assembly and for the drain trap on the height adjustable sink.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly further comprises an outer telescopic system which covers at least the overlapping section of the telescopic system.
- the outer telescopic system comprises, an outer upper member connected to the upper member and an outer lower member connected to the lower member, wherein the outer upper member is adapted by a smaller cross section to be partly accommodated in the outer lower member and hereby forming an outer overlapping section of the outer telescopic system which extends or contracts as the telescopic system extends or contracts. This is advantageous as it hinders access to the flexible member and prevents damages of the flexible member and its means for fixation on the upper member and lower member.
- Fig. 1 a schematic view of a telescopic drainpipe assembly according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 a schematic view of a telescopic drainpipe assembly in a contracted state.
- Fig. 3 a schematic view of a telescopic drainpipe assembly in an expanded state.
- Fig. 4 a schematic view of a telescopic drainpipe assembly in a disassembled state.
- Fig. 5 a schematic view of a telescopic drainpipe assembly in a contracted state.
- Fig. 1 shows a telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3.
- the inlet 2 can be connected to a height adjustable sink via a drain trap.
- the outlet 3 can be connected to the sewage system.
- the inlet 2 is in an inlet pipe 4 which is angled and connected to an upper flange 5.
- the angle of the inlet pipe can be any desired angle. However, it is preferred that it is close to 90° as it will be connected to a drain trap which normally has a horizontal exit.
- the upper flange 5 is connected to the telescopic system 6.
- the telescopic system 6 has an upper member 7 and a lower member 8.
- the upper member 7 is fixed to the upper flange 5. This means that when the height adjustable sink is lowered or raised the inlet pipe 4, the upper flange 5 and the upper member 7 will also be lowered or raised, respectively, as this section of the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 is coupled to the sink.
- the upper member 7 is partly accommodated in the lower member 8.
- the part where there is an overlap is denoted the overlapping section 9 of the telescopic system 6. There will always be an overlapping 9 but its extend will vary.
- the outlet 3 is in an outlet pipe 10 which is connected to the waste water system of the building where it is installed.
- the outlet pipe 10 is shown as being angled however this may vary depending on where it should be connected. If it should be connected to a pipe in the floor, a straight outlet pipe 10 can be desired and if connected to a pipe in the wall an angle might be preferred.
- the outlet pipe 10 is connected to a lower flange 1 1.
- the lower flange 1 1 is connected to the lower member 8 which forms part of the telescopic system 6 as described above.
- Fig. 1 also discloses a flexible member 12 of rubber that has a concertina form. This form does that there are used very little force in order to contract and extend the flexible member 12.
- the flexible member 12 is at its upper end attached to the upper member 7 and at its lower end attached to the lower member 8 in a fluid tight manner.
- the flexible member 12 could also be attached to the upper flange 5 or lower flange 11 as long as the flexible member 12 forms a tight enclosure inside it so that the gas inside the sewage system that escape through the slit between the upper member 7 and the lower member 8 does not reach the sink user.
- the upper member 7 comprises the upper flange 5 and the inlet pipe 4 and analogous for the lower member 8.
- the height adjustable sink preferably comprises means preventing it from raising to a height that will move the upper member 7 out of the lower member 8.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 shown in fig 1 also has an outer telescopic system 13. This has the function that it protects the flexible member 12 and further makes the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 easier to clean.
- the outer telescopic system 13 has an outer upper member 14 attached to the upper flange 5 and an outer lower member 15 attached to the lower flange 11. This will ensure that the outer telescopic system 13 is extended and contracted in parallel with the telescopic system 6.
- the volume between the telescopic system 6 and the flexible member 12 will have no build-up of pressure difference in relation to the ambient pressure as it will equalise with the sewage system through the slit between the upper member 7 and the lower member 8.
- the present invention is described as having two members 7, 8 forming the telescopic system 6. However there could be any number of members with any number of flexible member covering one or more overlapping sections. By using more than two members 7, 8 the telescopic system can have a greater difference between the fully contracted length and the fully extended state.
- Fig. 2 and 3 shows an assembled telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 . In fig. 2 it is in the contracted state and in fig. 3 it is in the extended state.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 comprises a wall fitting 16 that is designed for the attachment of the lower member 8 to a wall.
- This fitting can be any fitting that ensures that the lower member 8 is held stationary in relation to the upper member 7.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 further comprises a sink fitting 17 that is used to ensure that the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 is firmly attached to the height adjustable sink.
- the sink fitting 17 is connected to the sink with a rigid member (not shown) this ensures that the upper member 7 will follow the movement of the height adjustable sink.
- the sink fitting 17 can be moved in the horizontal direction along the inlet pipe 4 during installation.
- the sink fitting 17 is then chosen to have the position where the entire telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 together with the drain trap is suspended under the sink in a balanced and stable manner. This ensures that force applied to the telescopic system 6 is only in the axial direction.
- Fig. 4 discloses a disassembled telescopic drainpipe assembly 1.
- the flexible member 12 is attached to the upper member 7 and not to the lower member 8.
- Fig. 5 discloses a partly disassembled telescopic drainpipe assembly 1.
- the upper member 7 is accommodated in the lower member 8.
- the flexible member 12 does not cover the overlapping section 9 and is only attached to the upper member 7.
- the telescopic drainpipe assembly 1 is made from metal; however any suitable material can be used, such as PVC or ABS.
- outer telescopic system 13 outer upper member 14
- outer lower member 15 wall fitting 16
