- Depuration of living crustaceans and shellfish, or benthic organisms is further understood to mean that these creatures are kept alive for a determined time (the retention time), wherein a (sea)water flow is sustained and maintained through the product mass.
- This (sea)water flow provides for the supply of necessary nutrients and the discharge of waste products such as sand, as well as ammonia, faeces, pseudofaeces and other secretions produced by the benthic organisms.

- a discharge channel 46 is further integrated into a wall of outer container 41.
- a downward sloping section 47 of bottom 42 runs to an outflow opening 48 which is closable with a slide valve 49.
- Outflow opening 48 is preferably relatively large and slide valve 49 is a preferred embodiment of a control which is quick and easy to operate for selective opening and/or closing of the outflow opening. This is related to convenience of use but also, or more so, to outflow speeds, which must preferably be high when slide valve 49 is opened in order to allow runoff of as much as possible of the ammonia, faeces, pseudofaeces and other secretions produced by the benthic organisms.
- Other parts of the bottom can also have an incline and drain to outflow opening 48.
- Slide valve 49 can be operated with a pull or push rod 50 with which the slide valve can be selectively set into operation in order to selectively leave clear a throughfeed channel 51 between outflow opening 48 and discharge channel 46. It is emphasized here that this embodiment has a closed bottom plate 42 in the sense that water cannot pass from the bottom plate from the space thereabove to an underlying container in a stack without flowing through the ascent and descent channels 44, 45.
- Cross-contamination between containers lying above and/or below each other in such a stack can thus be effectively controlled because ammonia, faeces, pseudofaeces and other secretions produced by the benthic organisms are discharged separately via outflow opening 48 with slide valve 49, throughfeed channel 51 and discharge channel 46 without the danger of their being able to enter an underlying container in a stack of containers.
- the product holder can be formed integrally with the outer container or can be omitted as in figure 7.
- the product holder can be formed integrally with the outer container or can be omitted as in figure 7.
- Other variants also fall within the protection of the following claims. It is thus possible for the ascent and descent channels, perforated intermediate bottom (product carrier bottom), bottom plate at an incline and discharge opening for wastes etc. to form one whole.
- the outer container can have been or is provided with recesses and/or other accommodations in or at the bottom for transport by means of for instance a forklift truck, lifting device and the like.
- Outflow opening 5 can also be located on the underside in or at the bottom of the outer container as in the embodiment of figure 7 instead of in a side wall according to the other embodiments.
- Discharge channel 31, 32 can be integrated into (the interior of) at least one of the outer container and the product holder and need not be arranged on the outer side of the outer container, but can additionally or alternatively be positioned and received in the interior of the outer container as in the embodiment of figure 7.
