Definitions
- the present invention relates to a backpack with a ballistic insert.
- the backpack defines a passage between the edge of the compartment opening and the flap in the closed position, and comprises a handle, hereinafter “pull handle”, attached to the apron, this handle making, in the stowed position of the apron and in the closed position of the flap, projecting outside the compartment through this passage.
- backpack described in the preamble Such a backpack is called “backpack described in the preamble” in the following description.
- the wearer opens the flap and pulls the apron out of the compartment. He can then position it against his chest.
- This type of backpack is intended to be worn discreetly, especially by the police. It is important that the deck can be deployed quickly and that, in the deployed position, the deck provides maximum protection for the wearer.
- An object of the present invention is to meet this need.
- the invention provides a backpack with the features of claim 1. Such a backpack is able to protect the wearer from firing bullets or other ammunition.
- the flap thus participates in the protection of the wearer.
- the invention provides a backpack of the type described in the preamble, remarkable in that the apron straps have elasticity.
- the wearer can thus move the apron from the edge of the compartment opening to create an opening, which allows the passage of the wearer's head, or "neckline".
- the elasticity of the apron straps increases this spacing, which facilitates the passage of the head and accelerates deployment.
- such a backpack can thus be used by a wearer equipped with a helmet, for example a motorcycle helmet or a combat helmet.
- a helmet for example a motorcycle helmet or a combat helmet.
- the wearer releases the tension on the straps, which allows the apron to go up along the torso of the wearer, to his neck.
- the upper part of the torso can be perfectly protected.
- the elasticity of the straps of the apron is determined so as to elastically raise the apron towards the neck of the wearer once the wearer has ceased any traction on the traction handle, preferably until the apron is in contact with the the wearer's neck, preferably until pressing the wearer's neck.
- the invention proposes a backpack of the type of that described in the preamble, remarkable in that it comprises a belt, called “apron belt”, fixed to the compartment, preferably so deactivatable, near the bottom of the compartment, preferably less than 30 cm, preferably less than 20 cm from said bottom, and adapted to be fixed, at least temporarily, in the deployed position on the deck.
- apron belt fixed to the compartment, preferably so deactivatable, near the bottom of the compartment, preferably less than 30 cm, preferably less than 20 cm from said bottom, and adapted to be fixed, at least temporarily, in the deployed position on the deck.
- the apron belt thus immobilizes the apron against the torso of the wearer.
- the protection of the wearer is improved.
- the invention proposes a backpack of the type described in the preamble, remarkable in that, in the closed position, the flap is fixed to the compartment by at least one magnetic fastener.
- a magnetic fastener advantageously allows detachment under the effect of a low amplitude force, and in particular under the effect of the force exerted by the apron when the wearer pulls on the pull handle.
- the use of a magnetic fastener makes the fastener deactivation devices unnecessary, such as the links mechanically connecting the pull handle to the fastener to move the fastener to its unstrapped position at the same time as a pull is exerted on the pull handle to move the apron to its deployed position, as described in FR 2 962 017 .
- the discretion of the backpack is improved.
- Magnetic fasteners also facilitate stapling and unhooking of said fastener, while limiting wear.
- the invention proposes a backpack of the type of that described in the preamble, in which, in the stowed position, the apron is fixed, preferably suspended, in a deactivable manner, on the compartment, from preferably inside the compartment, more preferably on the rear face of the compartment, that is to say on the side which, when the rucksack is carried by the wearer, extends, at least partially, against the back of said wearer.
- the invention proposes a backpack of the type of that described in the preamble, in which, in the stowed position of the apron and in the closed position of the flap, the traction handle extends over a height greater than 5 cm, preferably greater than 8 cm above the top of the flap.
- the backpack comprises straps shaped so that, when the backpack is carried by a wearer, in the stowed position of the apron, the traction handle extends, at least in part, behind the nape of the neck, even behind the head of the wearer.
- the invention provides a backpack of the type described in the preamble, wherein the flap is detachable.
- the flap comprises an anti-trauma plate.
- the flap can thus serve as a shield for the face, in particular.
- a fastener or fastener is said to be “deactivatable” when it can be selectively activated, that is to say to ensure a fastening between two members, or “deactivated”, when it does not provide this fastening.
- the "equivalent" diameter of an opening or neck is the diameter of a disc of the same surface as said opening or neck.
- the qualifiers defining the relative positions refer to a configuration in which the backpack is worn by a carrier standing vertically, the back of the backpack designating the side of the backpack to the carrier, the flap being in the closed position.
- the rear face of the compartment is the face exposed to the outside and the rear face of the compartment is the face that extends along the back of the wearer.
- the rear face of the apron is the face exposed to the outside in the deployed position.
- the lower edge of the apron is the edge that extends near the bottom of the compartment in the stowed position and near the wearer's neck in the deployed position.
- a backpack 2 according to the invention externally has a similar appearance to conventional backpacks. All the characteristics conventionally observed on a conventional backpack, and in particular the presence of straps 45 and a lumbar belt, can be applied to a backpack according to the present invention.
- Strips are sewn on the straps 45, preferably substantially transversely to the length of the straps, to form MOLLE hooking loops.
- a backpack according to the invention comprises a compartment 4 closed by a flap 6.
- the volume of the compartment is delimited by a horizontal bottom 10, a vertical front face 12, a vertical rear face 14 and two vertical lateral faces 16.

- Exterior pockets may be disposed outside and / or inside the compartment.
- a Velcro® type fastener is provided, in the upper part of the compartment, to attach a wire, for example a telephone wire.
- the compartment 4 defines a compartment opening 20 for introducing and extracting an apron 50, described below.
- the compartment gradually fades as it approaches its opening 20, preferably from its bottom to its opening.
- the extraction of the deck is facilitated.
- the flap 6 preferably has a front flange 32, a rear flange 30 and side flanges 36.
- the flap 6 is made, at least in part, of a bullet-proof material.
- the material may be in particular one of the following types, defined by the United States National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard: I, IIA, II, IIIA, III, IV.
- NIJ National Institute of Justice
- the flap comprises an insert made of such a material, preferably a material of the NIJ-IIIA type, for example made of Dyneema®.

- UL Underwriters Laboratories
- NIJ National Institute of Justice
- the flap 6 is movable between a closed position in which it closes the opening 20 and first and second open positions, described below, in which it leaves unobstructed said opening.
- the flap 6 In the closed position, the flap 6 is preferably fixed on the front face 12 of the compartment by closures 40 and 41, deactivable, and on the rear face 14, by fasteners 60, 61 and 62, also deactivatable.
- the closures 40 and 41 correspond to the closures conventionally used in conventional backpacks.
- the closures 40 and 41 can thus be locked or unlocked reversibly, to prohibit or allow access to the interior of the compartment.
- the fasteners 60 and 62 provided near the upper edge of the rear face 14, serve as a hinge when the closures 40 and 41 are unlocked to tilt the flap 6 towards the rear of the compartment, to move it to its first position open, conventional.
- the fasteners 60, 61 and 62 are also deactivatable, preferably reversibly, that is to say configurable in unclamped and stapled positions in which they no longer connect and connect, respectively, the rear edge 34 of the flap to the
- indices "a” and "b” denote the parts of fasteners or closures that are attached to the compartment and the flap, respectively.
- the transition from the stapled position to the unstacked position can result from the deployment of the deck 50 between a stowed position in which said deck is housed in the compartment and an extended position in which the deck 50 extends in front of the carrier, so as to protect.
- closures 40 and 41 are secured to the compartment 4 by means of flap straps 100 and 101, respectively.
- the closures 40 and 41 and the flap straps 100 and 101 have a hinge function when the fasteners 60 and 62 are unclasped and the flap is tilted towards the front of the compartment 4, i.e. second open position.
- the length of the flap straps is preferably adjusted so that, in the second open position, that is to say after tilting of the flap 6 following unclamping of the fasteners 60 and 62, the flap 6 extends from preferably partially under compartment 4.
- the flap in the second open position, extends over a distance d of more than 10 cm, more than 20 cm, more than 30 cm under the bottom 10 of the compartment 4.
- the flap 6 extends in order to protect the upper buttocks to protect the kidneys, arteries and iliac veins.
- the width of the flap is preferably greater than 20 cm, preferably greater than 25 cm, preferably greater than 30 cm.
- the clips 60, 61 and 62 are magnetic fasteners.
- the flap is detachable from the rest of the backpack.
- the wearer can use it as a shield, especially to protect the face.
- each flap strap 100 and 101 may for example consist of two parts fixed to the compartment and the flap, respectively, and attached to each other by means of velcro-type Velcro strips. ®.
- the closures 40 and 41 can be deactivated by simply pulling on the flap.
- they can be magnetic.
- the flap is sized to cover a face.
- it has the general shape of a bowl, so that the head can engage to a position of facial protection.
- the flap 6 then makes it possible to protect the head also laterally.

- the flap comprises a flap handle 103 facilitating the gripping of the flap.
- the flap handle 103 is secured so that the wearer can hold the flap 6 in front of his face without exposing the hand holding the flap handle.
- the flap handle is fixed on the inner face 105 of the flap, that is to say on the face of the flap which is exposed towards the compartment in the closed position shown in FIG. figure 1 .
- the flap comprises at least right and left flap handles, fixed on the sides of the flap, preferably on the side flanges 36 of the flap, preferably on the inner face 105 of the flap.
- the wearer can pull with his right and left hands on the right and left flap handles, respectively, to press the flap into the facial protection position.
- the viewing holes 102 are then substantially in front of the eyes of the wearer.
- the one or more flap handles are made of fabric. They can take the form of a loop of rope or ribbon.
- the flap comprises an anti-trauma plate 107, for example Kevlar, preferably ceramic.
- An anti-trauma plate known per se, has a high rigidity which advantageously limits the trauma to the body during an impact of a large caliber bullet.
- an anti-trauma plate is inserted into the leading edge 32 and the trailing edge 30, as shown in FIG. figure 3 , and more preferably in the side flanges 36.
- more than 50%, preferably more than 60%, preferably more than 70%, more preferably more than 80%, more preferably more than 90%, preferably more than 95%, preferably 100% of the surface flap is protected by at least one anti-trauma plate.
- the apron 50 has a flap main body 104 and right wing 106 and left 108, laterally protecting the wearer in the deployed position.
- the right and left wings can be folded against the main apron pan in the stowed position.
- they are fixed on the main panel so as to have a tendency to move away elastically from said main panel.
- they thus make it possible to keep the front and rear faces of the compartment apart, and thus to simulate a filling of the compartment.
- this spacing accelerates the positioning of said wings against the flanks of the carrier, and thus improves its protection.
- the pressure exerted by the apron determines the outer shape of the compartment.
- the apron 50 preferably has upper edges 52 and lower 54, extending substantially horizontally.
- the lower edge 54 has a notch 56 for the passage of the wearer's head.
- the upper edge 52 has a pull handle 58 which, in the stowed position, extends outside the compartment, crossing a passage between the flap and the edge of the opening 20. This passage can take particular shape one or more slots.
- the length of the deck is preferably greater than 40 cm, preferably greater than 50 cm, preferably greater than 60 cm, or greater than 70 cm.
- the wearer does not need to permanently wear the apron in the deployed position. Unlike a conventional bulletproof vest, the apron can thus be of great length, and thus provide maximum protection without disturbing the wearer, especially when seated.
- the shape of the pull handle is not limiting.
- the pull handle 58 has the shape of a loop whose two ends 59a and 59b are fixed to the upper edge 52 of the deck.
- the loop shape, that is to say, closed loop, of the pull handle facilitates its picking by the wearer.
- the pull handle can be caught with a single finger, without the risk that the pull handle slips and escapes.
- the fixing points of said ends 59a and 59b on the deck are separated by a distance s greater than 8 cm, preferably greater than 10 cm, preferably greater than 12 cm, preferably greater than 14 cm, 18 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm.
- the pulling handle In the stowed position of the deck, as shown on the figure 1 the backpack being vertically arranged, the pulling handle upwards, the pulling handle preferably protrudes from the compartment with a height greater than 5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm, and preferably protrudes from the top S of the flap, in the closed position, by a height greater than 5 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm.
- the pull handle extends below the top S of the flap, preferably inside the compartment (i.e. under the upper edge 119 of the compartment opening), on a height h less than 10 cm, preferably less than 7 cm, preferably less than 5 cm and / or greater than 2 cm, greater than 3 cm.
- the pull handle is self-supporting, that is to say that in the stowed position, in the absence of any contact other than with the compartment, the flap and the apron, the traction handle is maintained in a substantially vertical plane, as shown on the figure 1 .
- the inventors have carried out numerous tests and have discovered that these characteristics considerably facilitate gripping and make it possible to accelerate the deployment of the apron. In addition, they allow the wearer to catch the pull handle with the right hand or the left hand, which is particularly advantageous when the wearer is injured.
- the straps 45 are preferably adjusted so that the upper portion of the handle 58 is disposed at neck height, preferably at neck height.
- the pull handle 58 is preferably formed from a web, preferably fabric, rolled on itself in the width direction, so as to form a hollow tube.
- the width of the web before winding may be greater than 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm and / or less than 35 mm, 30 mm.

- the thickness of the pull handle is the smallest dimension in a cross section of said pull handle.
- the thickness e is less than 10 mm, preferably less than 8 mm, regardless of the section of the traction handle considered.
- At least one fastener 60-62 is disposed on either side of the pull handle and, in the case where the pulling handle is in the form of a handle, at least one fastener is arranged between the two attachment points of the pull handle on the flap.
- the rear flange 30 of the flap has a rear edge 34 preferably having notches 63 arranged to allow the passage of the pull handle of the deck, in the closed position of the flap.
- the presence of notches 63 prevents the rear edge 34 from tilting the pull handle, and thus facilitates the holding of said pull handle in a substantially vertical position.
- the apron In the stowed position, the apron preferably extends against the rear face 14 of the compartment. Preferably, the apron is immobilized in the compartment, so as not to rest on the bottom 10 of the compartment. - it allows it to remain flat even when held by its end fixed to the deck, flat and horizontal.
- a tongue has a length greater than 2 cm, greater than 3 cm, greater than 4 cm, and / or less than 7 cm, less than 6 cm.
- the tabs advantageously allow to ensure accurate positioning of the apron in the compartment. This positioning is determined to facilitate the extraction of the deck.
- the suspension tongues are preferably arranged on either side of the pull handle 58.
- the apron is preferably in accordance with at least one of the standards mentioned in FIG. US 2009/014490 .
- the apron in the stowed position, is suspended so that its upper edge 52 extends less than 10 cm, less than 7 cm, less than 5 cm, less than 4 cm from the upper edge 119 defining the opening 20 of the compartment.
- the deployment of the deck is accelerated.
- the pull handle remains permanently accessible.
- the apron in the stowed position, is suspended so that its upper edge 52 extends more than 1 cm, more than 2 cm, more than 3 cm of the upper edge 119 defining the opening 20 of the compartment .
- the traction handle can thus be supported on the compartment, which improves its holding in a vertical position.
- the lower edge 54 of the apron is connected to the compartment 4, preferably to the rear face of the compartment 4, by means of two apron straps 74 and 76 arranged so that, in the deployed position, they each rest on one shoulder respective carrier.
- Each apron strap therefore has one end fixed to the apron, preferably on the lower edge 54 of the apron, and one end fixed inside the compartment 4, preferably on the rear face of said compartment, preferably less than 20 cm. preferably less than 10 cm from the bottom of the compartment.
- the length of the apron straps is adjustable in order to be adapted to the morphology of the wearer.
- the apron straps are preferably elastic in order to be able to lie down under the effect of a traction exerted by the wearer on the traction handle 58.
- Their attachment near the bottom of the compartment advantageously makes it possible to maximize their ability to elongation.
- the apron straps are in the form of a tubular envelope, elastic or inelastic, preferably non-elastic, for example polyester, and contain an elastic cable, preferably two cables, preferably three elastic cables.
- the resistance of the tubular strap is greater than 1000 daN at 1100 daN at 1200 daN.
- the length of the tubular strap is preferably substantially equal to the length of the elastic cable after the latter has been lengthened. At rest, the tubular strap is preferably pleated, so that it can lengthen, even if it is not elastic or has a lower elasticity than the flange or elastic cables.
- each elastic cable preferably consists of several strands, preferably rubber or elastomer, preferably covered with a textile sheath.
- an apron strap may have elasticity only over a fraction of its length.
- each apron strap has a sulk allowing its detachment of the apron and / or compartment.
- the backpack comprises a sheath 120 in which an apron belt 122 may be housed, at least one free end of the apron belt protruding out of the sheath.
- the carrier can, after deployment of the deck, bring said free end of the deck, then fix, preferably deactivatively, said apron.
- the fastening may in particular be provided by self-gripping strips of the Velcro® type.
- the apron belt has straight free ends 124 and left 126 protruding to the right and left of the wearer and the wearer can pull up to fix them on the apron in the deployed position.
- a portion, preferably substantially central, of the apron belt is fixed to the compartment, preferably inside the sheath, for example Velcro®-type Velcro® strips.
- the sheath has right and left openings from which right free ends 124 and left 126, respectively, of the apron belt protrude. More preferably, the sheath is in the form of a band whose edge, preferably an upper edge, is fixed to the compartment and an edge, preferably a lower edge, opposite said upper edge, is fixed temporarily, by Velcro®-type self-gripping strips on the compartment. By pulling on the upper edge, the wearer can access the part of the apron belt disposed in the sheath. This access allows in particular to come stow the apron belt inside the sheath.
- the apron belt is fixed, in a deactivatable manner, for example by hook and loop strips of the Velcro® type, so that, when using the backpack, in the stowed position of the apron, the belt apron can not get out of said sheath.
- the length of the free ends of the apron belt that protrude out of the sheath remains constant as long as the wearer does not pull on it.
- the right free end 124 and / or the left free end 126 of the apron belt are provided with fasteners 128, for example clip fasteners.
- these fasteners can be decoys, suggesting that the apron belt is a lumbar belt of the type conventionally used for backpacks.
- These fasteners facilitate the extraction of the two free ends of the apron belt of the sheath and fixing said free ends on the apron in the deployed position.
- the front face 130 of the apron that is to say the face which is exposed towards the outside in the deployed position, comprises self-gripping strips 132 of the Velcro® type adapted to cooperate with corresponding fixed bands. on the free ends of the apron belt in order to keep the apron in the deployed position.
- the apron belt can be deployed and fixed very quickly on the apron.
- the fasteners of the apron belt are not fictitious and can be attached to each other.
- the wearer can therefore use the apron belt in the stowed position of the apron, like a conventional lumbar belt.
- the apron comprises means for fastening the apron in the deployed position, for example a hook and loop fastener of the Velcro® type.
- the apron belt comprises two self-gripping strips, preferably of the Velcro® type, on each of its two faces respectively, arranged so as to be able to hang corresponding strips disposed on each of the two large faces of the apron, respectively.
- the apron can therefore be attached and fixed on the apron belt while the wearer is already using the apron belt (the face of the main part of the apron which covers the torso of the wearer is fixed on the face exposed to the outside of the apron.
- the apron belt or the free ends of the apron belt can be attached to the apron already in the extended position (the inner face of each free end of the apron belt is fixed on the face exposed to the outside of the apron). main apron).
- the front face of the apron still includes the attachment bands 84, of the MOLLE type, conventionally used for military equipment.
- the strips 84 can receive a gun sheath.
- a carrying handle is fixed to the compartment to facilitate the transport of the backpack by hand, especially in the stowed position of the deck.
- the carrying handle is fixed so as to withstand tearing under a force of 800 N, preferably 1000 N, preferably 1200 N, preferably 1500 N, preferably 2000 N.
- the carrying handle can be used as an extraction handle so that, if necessary, a person can pull the wearer when he can not move by his own means, for example in case of injury.
- the carrying handle can be immobilized, deactivably, on the compartment, for example by means of a Velcro® self-gripping system.
- the wearer is therefore not likely to confuse the carrying handle with the pull handle when he wears the backpack.
- the backpack has the appearance of a city bag and does not include a lumbar belt other than, optionally, the apron belt.
- the backpack In the initial position, the backpack is carried by the wearer in a conventional manner, the straps resting on the shoulders of the wearer and the optional lumbar belt being fixed so as to surround the wearer, conventionally substantially at the level of the navel or the sternum.
- the apron is then in the stowed position, the flap 6 being in the closed position, closing the opening 20 of the compartment 4.
- the tabs of the deck are housed in the corresponding recesses of the rear face 14 of the compartment, which prevents the deck from deforms by leaning on the bottom of the compartment and allows to position the deck so as to facilitate its extraction from the compartment.
- the pull handle protrudes out of the compartment 4, out of said compartment between the rear edge 34 of the flap and the edge of the compartment defining the opening 20.
- the pull handle thus extends behind the head of the wearer.
- the fasteners 60 and 62 are in the stapled position and the closures 40 and 42 are in the closed position.
- the carrying handle is held against the compartment 4, preferably so that only the pull handle is accessible by the wearer.
- the apron belt is stored in its housing, with the exception of its two free ends which protrude, to the right and left, respectively, so as to be easily grasped by the wearer.
- the carrier catches the pull handle 58 and pulls it upwards. This traction leads, by the action of the apron, to the unclamping of the fasteners 60 and 62.
- the fasteners being magnetic, a pull of one hand is enough to unclog them.
- the fasteners 60 and 62 being in the ungraded position, the flap 6 tilts, under the effect of the exit of the apron out of the compartment, to the second open position. Under the effect of gravity, the flap falls, until held, suspended by the flap straps and the closures 40 and 42 (second open position). The flap being shielded, it can then protect the lower back, or even the buttocks of the wearer.
- a second bulletproof apron preferably made of a material identical to the apron 50, is fixed on the front face or the rear face, preferably on the rear face of the backpack.
- the second apron is shaped to provide NIJ-IIIA, NIJ-III or NIJ-IV protection, preferably at least one NIJ-III protection.
- the flap extends the protection provided by the second bulletproof apron to protect the back of the wearer in the deployed position.
- the apron straps that hold the apron on the compartment are stretched. Their elasticity then makes it possible to increase their length, and thus to increase the spacing between the apron and the opening of the compartment. It is then easy for the wearer to put the apron over his head and fold it over his chest, even if he wears a helmet or a motorcycle helmet.
- the wearer After passing his head, the wearer down the apron so that it rests on his stomach.
- the wings of the apron can then protect the sides of the wearer.
- the elasticity of the straps of the apron is preferably determined so that the apron immediately back to the wearer's neck once the wearer has ceased any traction on the pull handle.
- the wearer thus benefits from immediate protection of the upper part of his torso, a region that is particularly critical to protect.
- the arrangement of the traction handle above the backpack makes it very easy to catch and, in cooperation with the elasticity of the straps, allows a particularly rapid deployment. Tests have shown that this deployment is possible in less than 2 seconds, which, to the knowledge of the inventors, is an unequaled performance.
- the configuration of the traction handle allows the wearer to easily hold the apron on his stomach, which is particularly useful if the wearer must move, for example running, before he could fix the belt of the apron on the apron.
- the rigidity of the pull handle is preferably determined so that the apron does not move laterally as the wearer runs while holding said pull handle.
- the wearer then catches the free ends of the apron belt.
- the wearer then pulls on the two free ends of the apron belt, which increases the length of the pieces of the apron belt protruding out of the sheath.
- the wearer can then fold these pieces of the apron belt on the apron.
- Velcro®-type Velcro fastening strips attached to said free ends and on the apron can then cooperate to effectively maintain the apron against the torso and the belly of the wearer.
- the protection of the wearer is optimal, without the apron hinders his movements. Tests have also shown that the setting in the service position of the apron belt is possible in less than 2 seconds.
- the front face of the apron comprises a sheath for a firearm.
- the wearer can thus access his firearm as soon as the apron deployed.
- the wearer can detach the flap and use it as a shield, especially to protect the face.
- the vision holes allow him to continue to observe his environment.
- a backpack according to the invention is very discreet in the stowed position of the apron, can be deployed extremely quickly, then provide effective protection, with great comfort, and especially in a back region which is not covered by the backpack compartment.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and shown, provided for descriptive and non-limiting purposes.
- the number and shape of fasteners, closures, or pulling and carrying handles are not limiting.
- the fasteners could be made using self-gripping Velcro® type strips or with snaps.
- the backpack may also not have fasteners or closures.
- the fasteners could also tie the apron and the flap, not the flap and the compartment.
- closures 40 and 41 which are used to suspend the flap in the second open position, could also be replaced or supplemented by any other suspension member, for example by a strap binding the flap and the compartment.
