Definitions

  • the offset printing process is a printing process that has been in use in the printing industry for a long time.
  • the offset printing presses equipped for this usually include at least one inking unit, printing unit and dampening unit.
  • ink is transferred from a printing plate, which is also referred to as a printing form, to the printing material such as paper or cardboard in the form of a thin layer.
  • the inking unit always supplies the printing areas with fresh ink.
  • the dampening system has the task of providing the non-printing elements of the printing plate with a thin film of dampening solution.
  • dampening units are known, for example siphon dampening units, film dampening units and brush dampening units.
  • the dampening solution is used to separate the printing and non-printing areas on the printing form, i.e. to avoid ink transfer to ink- or image-free areas of the printing plate.
  • fountain solutions are usually used, which consist mainly of water.
  • the DE10238874A1 describes a method with which it should be possible to extend the service life of a dampening solution.
  • the EP 1 080 943 A1 describes dampening solution that should enable good printing results without the addition of isopropanol to the dampening solution.
  • the EP 2 233 311 A1 describes organic additives to fountain solutions for lithographic printing processes, which are intended to reduce deposits during the printing process.
  • an inorganic additive preferably being selected from magnesium sulfate and its hydrates, sodium bicarbonate and its mixtures.
  • the invention has several advantages. Even after several thousand printing processes, there is hardly any picture framing. The printing process becomes more efficient because fewer or no washing cycles are required. Detergent and descaler are saved.
  • the present invention therefore relates to the use of at least one inorganic additive as an addition to a dampening solution to reduce deposits in an offset printing process.
  • the deposits are preferably picture framing.
  • dampening agents customarily used in offset printing processes can be considered as dampening agents for the subject of the present invention.
  • dampening solutions preferably consist predominantly of water and are produced from a dampening solution concentrate.
  • Suitable fountain solutions can be alcohol-free or have an alcohol content, for example up to 10% by weight or 20% by weight alcohol.
  • the alcohol content is preferably isopropanol.
  • Dampening solutions suitable for the present invention are, for example, those marketed by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg, Germany, under the brand name Saphira® or dampening solution that is produced in the printer from dampening solution concentrates available under this brand name.
  • the picture framing is essentially due to the printing media used in the printing units of the offset printing process, such as printing inks and varnishes.
  • the subject according to the invention makes it possible to reduce picture framing in all print media that are customarily used in offset printing.
  • the print media can be, for example, conventional offset printing inks, UV printing inks or hybrid printing inks.
  • the at least one inorganic additive comprises at least one of the substances from the group of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal sulfates, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydrogen sulfates, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal carbonates, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydrogen carbonates, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal halides, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal iodates and their hydrates .
  • the at least one inorganic additive comprises at least one of the substances sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, sodium hydrogen sulfate, magnesium hydrogen sulfate, sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, magnesium hydrogen carbonate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, sodium iodate, potassium iodate, magnesium iodate and hydrates thereof.
  • the at least one inorganic additive comprises at least one of the substances magnesium sulfate, magnesium hydrogen sulfate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium chloride, potassium fluoride, potassium iodate and their hydrates.
  • the at least one inorganic additive is selected from magnesium sulfate and its hydrates, magnesium hydrogen sulfate, sodium hydrogen carbonate and mixtures thereof.
  • the at least one inorganic additive is selected from magnesium sulfate and its hydrates and sodium bicarbonate, in particular from magnesium sulfate and its hydrates.
  • Magnesium sulfate and its hydrates are also known as the Epsom salt.
  • Sodium bicarbonate is also known as baking soda.
  • this can also be present in the form of a mixture with other salts as vacuum salt.
  • the present invention relates to a method for reducing deposits in an offset printing process, in which at least one fountain solution is used, in which at least one fountain solution is provided and at least one inorganic additive is added to the at least one fountain solution, which is selected from Magnesium sulfate and its hydrates, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium chloride, potassium fluoride, potassium iodate and mixtures thereof, preferably among magnesium sulfate and its hydrates, sodium hydrogen carbonate and mixtures thereof.
  • the at least one dampening solution is provided in at least one dampening unit of an offset printing machine and the at least one inorganic additive, preferably those mentioned above as preferred, is added to the at least one dampening solution in the at least one dampening unit.
  • the addition of the at least one inorganic additive can take place according to methods which are known in principle, for example by addition in the form of a solid or in the form of a solution, in particular an aqueous solution.
  • the at least one inorganic additive preferably those mentioned above as preferred, is added to the at least one fountain solution in the form of an aqueous solution.
  • the aqueous solution can be added to the dampening solution, for example, by automatically opening a valve that is connected to a reservoir containing the aqueous solution via a supply line.
  • the present invention relates to a dampening solution for an offset printing process which contains at least one of the substances magnesium sulfate and its hydrates and sodium bicarbonate in an amount of at least 0.5 g per 100 L dampening solution, preferably at least 5 g per 100 L dampening solution, particularly preferably at least 10 g per 100 L dampening solution and very particularly preferably at least 30 g per 100 L dampening solution.
  • Epsom salt 50 g were added to 100 l of a fountain solution which had been produced using Saphira® Fount 210 AR from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg, Germany.
  • the fountain solution obtained was used in the dampening unit of a Speedmaster® offset printing press from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg, Germany, during a print job of 6000 sheets of paper. After the print job was completed, the naked eye could only see small amounts of ink deposits in the printing unit on the blanket cylinder and impression cylinder. The print quality of the paper sheets was perfect.
  • Example 2 The same print job as in Example 1 was carried out, with the difference that no Epsom salt was added to the dampening solution. After the print job was completed, the naked eye could clearly see ink deposits in the printing unit on the blanket cylinder and impression cylinder. The print quality of the paper sheets was perfect.
